Technically, smooth-bore muzzle loaders don't fire bullets--they fire balls. And pellets are often used in the modern context of shotguns, but in the period of which we are talking they are referred to as 'shot', sometimes with a precursor to indiciate the size of the shot; i.e. buckshot, birdshot, etc.
There were several Pennsylvania volunteer regiments in the US Civil War who used smooth-bore muskets and their preferred load was what was known as 'buck-and-ball'. They basically loaded a ball (between half an inch and three-quarters of an inch in diameter), tamped it down, and then loaded a few buckshot and another wad on top. Made a big boom.

you may be interested to know however that somewhat recently I was perusing the entry on damage reduction and found a particular paragraph that makes guns somewhat more terrifying.
Damage reduction does not negate touch attacks, energy damage dealt along with an attack, or energy drains. Nor does it affect poisons or diseases delivered by inhalation, ingestion, or contact.
Provided that I am reading that properly then damage reduction is never an issue for guns.

Except guns don't count as touch attacks for the purposes of feats which aren't allowed to function when using touch attacks.
You could probably pull some shenanigans and try to get past DR with it but it's clear what the intention was at least for me.
