Benefit: You gain a +2 insight bonus on Knowledge checks made to identify creatures, including the one Kirin Style allows. While using Kirin Style against a creature you have identified using that feat, as a swift action after you have hit a creature with a melee or ranged attack, you can add twice your Intelligence modifier in damage (minimum 2).
Kirin Strike part of the Kirin Style combat feat adds 2 x INT to a melee or ranged attack.
Now as I understand it spells are considered melee or ranged attacks, are they not?
My question and motivation are simple, but for those whom wish to know could a Wizard or Sorcerer (Sage Archetype) add 2x their Int bonus to a spell such as shocking grasp, or magic missile or fire ball.
Or could this be used in combination with a Magus with his spell combat?
Just wanting to know if I'm understanding the RAW and the RAI of this combat maneuver?

Wow. Would my 30 Intelligence wizard get +60 damage to his scorching ray spell with this (+20 for each ray)?
If so, than HOLY COW!!!
Combined with other builds that focus on scorching ray and your damage can get WAY HIGH.

Thus the post, does this work the way it reads or is there a rules call that would stop it from working.

To be honest, I am surprised you didn't figure this out sooner. Look into Explosive Missile discovery and targeted bomb admixture. And this. And cognotegan.

You have to have identified the creature using kirin style and it takes a swift action to use the damage buff. You could only use it on one attack per round. For a magus, I could see this being somewhat useful if you for some reason have that many extra feats.
Except that identifying the creature only takes a DC (15+CR) roll, which is effectively a cakewalk for any wizard. Fighting a CR 10 creature, as a 10th level wizard, you'll have at least (10 ranks + 3 class skill + 7 INT bonus), minimum, making the check succeed on at most a 5 or better. Higher INT items, or more substantial inherent bonuses, mean it's even less of a problem.
I'm not complaining, mind you. My monk/wizard build just got a lot nastier, that's all I'm saying. *grin*

You forgot that the style gives you a bonus to id the creature..so
10 Ranks +3 Class Skill +7 INT +4 ID bonus = 24 You Id on a roll of hmmm 1 and sense you using the Kirin progression you get to take 10. So at 10th level you get a roll of 34 Every Time All the Time....Which means you know a minimum of 3 things and get a +14 to damage with a Ranged Touch or Melee touch spell.
