Harrowstone - here's a mood-appropriate way to help the players out...

When I ran Haunting last month, I had a brainwave after the Piper haunt sucked the party monk dry and the PCs carried his corpse back to town. For the rest of that adventure, the monk's former companions kept getting little 'boosts' - essentially the same as if an Aid Another had been made. Since I'm presenting only the relevant facts, you've undoubtedly caught on a lot faster than they did: their monk companion's spirit had been caught in Harrowstone's web, but didn't have the strength to become a ghost (that would've been waaaay too much help!) + acted more like a mobile, beneficial haunt effect. Uncanny, but helpful. Came in real handy in the Lopper fight, especially.

This is a really great idea! I may use that if my players die at all during Harrowstone ... we start first weekend of November :)

Excellent idea. I've been toying with something similar, not vis-a-vis a dead PC, but vis-a-vis an NPC who will sometimes be invisibly tailing the party (it's a long story). I had been thinking the PCs might get to make a re-roll during the session they receive aid from the NPC, but the aid another effect is interesting as well. How did you play it out in game? Did you announce to the player "take a +2 on that roll" without explanation? How often did the monk ghost offer the "boosts"?

Well, the boost only applied to companions who were there when he died (the two who joined up afterward - including the player's replacement character - were total strangers to the spirit.) I would generally tell the two eligible survivors, "One or the other of you can take a bonus either to AC against one enemy, or to an attack roll." I let them decide which of them received the bonus. Although I meant to apply it to all subsequent fights, I did forget once or twice - which just added to its mysteriousness. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably have only used the bonus for fights with undead (which still translates to 'most of them'.)
