Improved Precise Shot vs Entropic Shield.

Rules Questions

Ok me and my GM got into a discussion on this and want everyones opinion.

Entropic Shield states Each ranged attack directed at you for which the attacker must make an attack roll has a 20% miss chance (similar to the effects of concealment).

Improved Precise Shot states that you ignore miss chance granted to targets by anything less than total concealment.

would improved precise shot negate the concealment of entropic shield? My argument is yes because the spell creates a magical field that is providing the concealment and that the feat removes the concealment since it is not total concealment. My gm states that its a spell effect and so not actual concealment. The issue I have is it states that the effects is similar to concealment and Imp Prec Shot works against all forms of concealment like a Blur spell and similar magic. So if that is the case then shouldnt it work for Entropic shield as well?.

No, Improved Precise Shot will NOT negate the 20% miss chance from Entropic Shield, since the miss chance is NOT from concealment.

Entropic Shield's miss chance is from DEFLECTING the shot, not concealing you from the shooter. They simply call out the Concealment rules as how to handle the 20% miss chance.

Quote:
This field deflects incoming arrows, rays, and other ranged attacks. Each ranged attack directed at you for which the attacker must make an attack roll has a 20% miss chance (similar to the effects of concealment).

Strangely enough, however, the Seeking enhancement for ranged weapons would negate the miss chance from Entropic Shield.

Aaaaand.... that means I need to reconsider my PFS Archer's final feat, since he already has Seeking on his bow, and IPS would only help against cover, since it already bypasses miss chances.

Ninja'd by Callarek, completely agree.

Agree completely. I just wanted to point out that the confusion comes in because the feat seems to imply it's only meant to apply to miss chances due to cover or concealment, but is worded such that someone could argue that it covers all miss chances except total cover and total concealement.

I think this is a case where a couple words too many were pared in quest of brevity.

Thanks Guys

now hows about seeking vs mirror image?

Actually, I would dispute this (though I still think it is a reasonable call).

Entropic Shield's miss chance is from DEFLECTING the shot, not concealing you from the shooter. They simply call out the Concealment rules as how to handle the 20% miss chance.

Precise shot does not specify negating miss chance only from concealment. It negates any miss chance that can be ranked less than Total Concealment. Now, to me, it sounds like the writer didn't consider the possibility of miss chance coming from anything else, or they assumed comparison between non-concealment miss chance and concealment miss chance to be too obvious to need clarification, but the fact remains that all miss chance below a defined mark is bypassed and the mark is defined by a single type of miss chance which happens to be a concealment type.

There is a second more solid reasoning as well, and it is the fact that cover is negated as well, and cover is very comparable to deflection since cover is basically something that deflects and/or blocks an attack (distinct from other deflection and blocking by way of being unattached to, and not controlled by, the target.

Thus, since the feat works against cover, aka a barrier that blocks attacks rather than obfuscating the target, it therefore makes sense that it works against a spell that likewise blocks attacks without relying on obfuscation.

Especially since other spells do not automatically foil the feat either.
