Is there even a reason to play a Fanglord?

Advice

To save you from diving, Fanglord is one of the skinwalkers from

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/more-races/standard-races-1-10-rp /skinwalkers-10-rp#TOC-Weretiger-Kin-Fanglord-

They get charisma when they shapeshift (yay!) but wait! Whats this? For all skinwalkers when they shapeshift they get:

While in bestial form, a skinwalker takes a –4 penalty on Charisma and Charisma-based checks when interacting with humanoids that lack the shapechanger subtype.

Is there even a point to play a Fanglord then? You pretty much nullify your benefit, or worse compared to the other skinwalkers.

For spells and class abilities that depend on charisma you add the bonus but ignore the penalty because it doesn't actually affect the score.
So a bard, sorcerer, oracle could well benefit from being a fanglord. Unless when using face skills.

The fact that you can also get See in Darkness as well as a bite and two claws (albeit with a couple feats invested) sounds pretty solid to me.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Plus chicks dig tigers

Grand Lodge

And in a game focused on dealing with other (NPC) shifters, you would take no penalty

It's likely that the wording is confusing and you get a -4 on Charisma checks, not Charisma score.

I think there was a FAQ about it, don't recall if it was answered.

Still doesn't change the fact that they are the ones with a LARGE focus on CHA skills. They have several intimidation based options. And for some reason, intimidation goes way down when you grow fangs from your face.

I hear there is a trait that fixes the cha penalty thing...still, you have to spend a resource to fix something that was kind of broken. And that trait is from one small side thing, and was released AFTER Blood of the Moon (which means it doesn't change the fact that this was kinda broken on release)

The thing that annoys me though is that the fanglord has the "standard" cat scores- dex/cha/-wis. There are three different cat races with those stats (catfolk, rakshasa tieflings, fanglords). Why can't cats be strong? Why can't they be wise? I mean, most of those listed races are TIGERS. The biggest cats in the world. Larger than any canine. Why can't they can stout and strong? How about smart? Can they be wily with an INT bonus?

And really...Paizo uses that set of stats WAY too often. Several tieflings, fetchlings, ifrits, etc.etc. It is one of the most common set of scores, really.

I keep reading "fanglord" as "fangirl".

Its quite bad though. Non skinwalkers should be scared off with fangs and claw but since intimidate is keyed off charisma, they wouldn't because of the mechanics.

This isn't exactly important but here is the more important part. 2/3 of the Fanglord feats uses dazzling display which relies on intimidate. A charisma based skill. The third while not intimidate uses...bluff... Another charisma based skill.

The three feats along with the Fanglord stats goes to prove above all it should be a cha focused race for cha focused builds but then the base skinwalker feature actually nerfs charisma based skills. Soooooo....

Fanglord is something which is broken from its conception. And not in a good way we players would enjoy breaking.

Bluff might not be so bad, since it is designed to occur at the start of a fight. So you could hulk out afterwards.

Still a terrible option due to action economy, since you need at least a move action (after fast change) to access...well half of your racial features. Including the bonus to CHA. Because that is the stat that is locked behind your transformation.

So you either act like you a +0 cha race, or deal with a -3 total to the check.
