Have you by any chance specified a custom font for web display? If so, you might want to choose a different one.

Nope. This my work machine, and basically firefox is used exclusively for browsing these forums... very odd indeed.

I bet you have more than one version of your default font installed, and the version that's loading doesn't support ligatures. (Further, I'm guessing that the version that's loading comes from an old Microsoft package.)

I'd suggest opening Apple's FontBook app and validating your fonts.
