I decided that it might be interesting to try a Pathfinder Society game at Gen Con, considering I've never played PFS before and figured Gen Con games might be geared for new players.
I couldn't make heads or tails of the event descriptions, or figure out what ticket to buy. So I visited the Pathfinder rooms upstairs, figuring I could get some explanation as to what was going on.
No luck. I managed to walk around the room for 15 minutes trying to figure out what was going on, but never once saw a sign pointing me to a place to go, or a person who wasn't already fully occupied with a rather urgent task or who seemed appropriate to ask for direction.
So I thought I'd try here. What procedure, if any, could I engage in tomorrow that might result in me getting to make and play a Pathfinder Society character, having never done so before?
And for my future benefit, where should I have been able to find this information online or onsite?

Sounds like you are in the right room (judging by the craziness you mentioned), and I'm sorry that you were not able to get the information that you needed. We will start getting our final slot mustered and playing tomorrow morning at 8am, so if you want to show up with generic tickets (you'll need 3 of them) and try and get a table, please do. If we can't seat you at a table (and we do try our very best), we should have delves available, which are quick 45 minute encounters.
The place you should go is the front of the room with "231" over the door. The people you should look for are people wearing blue Paizo Publishing shirts, red Pathfinder Society Venture Captain shirts, or Paizo Golem volunteer shirts. Any one of them should be able to help you answer questions...and if they don't, I'm going to have words with them...Bwah-hah-hah! (They will be running until midnight tonight, so stop back on by and it should be less crazy in there.)
If you stop by tomorrow morning early and ask for me by name, I will happily assist you if something urgent does not require my attention. In the meantime, you should check out our free Pathfinder Society Guide to Organized Play PDF which should get you started on the right track to create a character. We have copies of the Guide at our HQ, which is at the front of the room, along with blank character sheets. (You should also get your Pathfinder Society ID number ready, and you can start right here).

Show up at room 231 tomorrow at 8 am with 3 generics and a level 1 character created according to the PFS rules? I can do that! Thank you.
Any class I should gravitate toward or away from, in order to better aid / not annoy more experienced players?
As the HQ Venture-Captain on duty, I apologize for not being able to assist you in a timely manner for whatever reason.
Come back, as Liz mentioned in the morning with Generic Tickets, line up in the Generic line no later than 7:30. If you are going to created a level 1 character in accordance with the PFS rules, please create something that you are interested in playing first and foremost.
