GRRRRR!
More and more threads seem to be getting locked because they have been deemed personally annoying, not because any rules have been broken. Can we please back off that a little bit? It's getting hard to have any discussion at all, especially about certain (not illegal) topics. Plus, it is pretty darn annoying to write a post, only to have it fail to "stick" without so much as an error message.

We don't like locking threads. But if threads go off the rails, or aren't contributing anything, or are causing excessive staff time watching and removing crap posts, we will lock them. Note that "excessive staff time" is probably the most common reason for us to lock a thread.
For what it's worth, we've locked 34 threads in the past month, and 8 in the past week. One of those is a product discussion thread that will be unlocked in an hour or so. We average around 130 new threads created per day. So it might just be confirmation bias that you happen to be noticing the handful that have been locked recently.

Nah, it was nothing juicy. There was some bickering going on about the blind, random packaging model for pre-painted plastic minis. It probably wasn't productive, but it wasn't really offensive either. At least not as far as I can see. And there were some other reasonable, useful things being between the trolling and drama.

1) You couldn't measure such a thing, even if you wanted to;
2) If you could, I suspect 99% of the threads in any messageboard, much less Paizo, would be locked.
It's a silly criteria for an internet messageboard, in any case. Might explain some wild and random lockings, though! :D
And... yeah. This thread isn't going anywhere and isn't contributing anything, so please lock it.

That's a standard we only really apply to things like playtest forums, where we need the threads to stay on topic and help Jason et al get the feedback they need. The customer service forum is like this as well, if people start having an extended conversation about stuff that isn't customer service because it makes it harder for our customer service people to do their job.

That's how moderation works *always* - it is always based on the personal feelings of the designated moderators, and unless a clear set of rules is posted *for moderators* it tends to become more arbitrary over time.
Moderators will always claim they use some sort of very rigid and righteous set of criteria, but really, its just judgement calls by people who are, ultimately, no more qualified to make those judgement calls than you are, they just happen to have the ability to do so and make you live with them.
That said, there are also plenty of people who believe that anyone in a position of authority must inherently have qualities that make them well-suited to make decisions for others, so trying to organize people to resist arbitrary moderation will invariably end in failure.
At the end of the day it comes down to someone deciding there's merit in a flimsy "slippery slope" argument that justifies enforcing order on conversations that all posters are willing participants in. "If we don't stop this madness, rome will surely burn, so... this thread is locked/post is edited/deleted!"
