In the spell they use the discriptor diametrically opposed.
That means there has to be a ceiling within 20 feet of the floor for it to work, or 2 parallel walls within the range of the spell to work. Am I right?
If that is correct can someone kind of explain to me what "collapses on itself" means for the spell?

The usual interpretation our group has had on this spell is more or less as you have said, with a few exceptions.
The "diametrically opposed" anchors can be anything strong enough to hold the web and whatever is inside it. Trees, statues, heavy furniture, etc.
We interpret "collapses on itself" to mean "vanishes in a puff of sticky smoke".
I have allowed webs to be cast directly on creatures and it will give them the "entangled" condition unless they make a str check to break free. But it doesn't hold them in place even if they fail the str check, they just remain entangled.

See and I wanted to do a Str check to break free while GMing last night, but apparently Web is either Escape Artist or Combat Maneuver or thats it...found it odd Str was no longer an option.
I guess the next question I have is what if part of the spell area of effect is within a cage (4 walls and a ceiling) and the rest is outside where there isn't a diametrically opposed ceiling? the web basically cocoons the cage but thats all that is effected?
I love these little scenarios that arise...the game night arguments bring everyone together.

ossian, I think most of these sorts of things will be the GM's call based on how they see the world reacting.
A web cast on a cage with no other opposed anchor would, in my world, collapse onto the cage and would likely web whatever is inside the cage pretty thoroughly if it is in the spells area of affect.
Oh, I had a 3.5 flashback on the str check... It's actually a CMB check now I think...
