Use magic device - charges are lost on a failure?

Rules Questions

I have a short question regarding use magic device and a failure:
Is a charge on a wand used or a scroll destroyed if i fail the UMD DC?

Regards,
Eridan

I believe only if you fail by ten or more though that may be only on blind activation.

I don't believe so. Charges are normally expended when an item is activated; so if it doesn't activate then there's no charge expenditure.

Use magic device has no clause saying that on a fail the charge is used. In order to use a charge you must use the item. If you fail your UMD, the item doesn't work to begin with. Your waving a stick around for 6 seconds.

So no charge used on a fail. However, on a roll of a 1, you can not use the wand for 24 hours.

Just wanted to point out there is a odd clause with that one. It only applies when you roll "a natural 1 while attempting to activate an item and you fail. (emphasis added)" If your UMD is high enough, you can roll natural ones all day long provided you still succeed on activating the device.

Would the same be true for activating a scroll if you roll a 1 but have a +19 UMD u would still succeed?

PS:and yes only the one they call Atalius would bring back a thread from more than half a decade ago.

A Natural 1 is not an autofail on any skill (nor does a natural 20 auto-succeed). IF you roll a 1 with +19 worth of modifiers, you still succeed on activating the DC 20 scroll.

Edit: Well, actually you would still fail. Activating a scroll isn't DC 20. It is DC 20 + the scrolls caster level, or a minimum of DC 21. A wand on the other hand is always DC 20, so in that case you would succeed.
