Until you tell them: "Kiting means running while the bad guy chases you."

I would have thought that term was "fleeing".

I always preferred the term "monster baiting".

Oh, I bet you love monster baiting :P

As for "flimsy half-formed words that mangle the English language", I'd be tempted to rip your various posts apart for grammar, typographical, and usage errors, but that would make me a troll.

Oh, go ahead. After all, what you said there makes you a troll already. And pretentious. And silly for thinking that this ridiculous, "veiled" attempt to troll would fool anyone. "I would insult you but I don't because that would be bad" isn't a witty way of implying someone's dumb while just staying off the line that would make it an insult.

And attacking a foreigner who's probably trying to learn the language and get better because he thinks people should make an effort is quite arrogant.

Take that nonsense elsewhere.

Of course it does. But, how can a GM achieve immersion if his players are treating the game like a video game?

Using the word "kite" does not equal treating the game like a video game.

Quote:
I know there are video games that provide great immersion, but we are talking MMOs here. A game where you get ostracized, demeaned and called a f&$ if your 'build' is not up to par. God forbid if you want to RP some.

And yet you strike me as the sort who might demean or ostracize someone for not RPing in a way that meets your personal standards.

Just to note, I love video games and play them frequently. For the story. I love a good story in a video game.

Is this like reading a Playboy for the articles?

It's a start. Using a single word will make them start using more words.

No, actualy, the only thing i demand from my players is not to refer to their PCs in third person. That kills immersion for me instantly. I do not demean people for not roleplaying, i just encourage it by giving bonus EXP for it.

Scott Betts wrote:

Acutaly, yes, and, i do it. My roommate byes Playboy, CKM and Maxim...those magazines have some wicked articles that i love to read...sometimes several times. He buys it for semi-naked women...i like articles and pretty faces.

I did not mean it to be "You're stupid but I won't say that", though I see how it comes off that way.

I meant it more as a "You really shouldn't declare what is and is not harmful to the English language unless your grammar and spelling can't be called into question."

Or, more typically the whole glass-houses and stone-throwing thing.

The point about him being a foreigner doesn't really change the matter. How can someone who doesn't know the language claim what deserves to be in it and what does not? In fact, how can someone who DOES know the language do that?

You did a wonderful job painting me to be an ass, but to be fair I was being an ass. :-P Declaring "The death of language" or claiming to be in a position that qualifies you to exclude certain words from other people's vocabulary is a pet peeve of mine.

Feel free to pick apart my post for errors.

If you'll pardon me, I'm off to tank some mobs on my main toon.

So you would be upset if I said "Auris moves to the window and watches the street. What does he see?"

Because I use third person for actions and first person for dialogue.

I wouldn't be upset, i just wouldn't like it. It kills immersion for me completely. It is your character. It is your alter-ego. It is your way of playing that character. I would just be much more hard pressed to actualy feel like i'm in a game world and not at the table looking at pieces of bendy plastic on graph paper.

I think that illustrates why we disagree so much. My group remembers we're playing a game first. Yours remembers they're telling a story first.

We have a joke whenever someone says "I do X", where someone says "No, your character does X. You see, some people have trouble telling the difference between their characters actions and their own."

Your group WANTS to forget the difference between their actions and their characters actions. Mine does not.

To Hama. I don't agree with your position as regards to use of language, but I'm not posting to change your mind, I think to each their own. I just wanted to say that I think your English is great. To be mistaken for a native English speaker that's just a little sloppy shows a great grasp of a second language. I know its likely better than any of our Serbian. Cheers and have fun.

Both ways are good and fun.

Agreed. I did not make any statements about one being better/more fun than the other. Only that those were our differences.

They are, but that's the beauty of living in a world where not everyone does things the same. Variety is a glorious thing.

It's good, but there's room for improvement! After all, I'm sometimes not only mistaken for a native English speaker, but an elitist native English speaker who condescends to others for their crappy English!

;-P

(But the meanie is right: Your English is quite good already. Probably better than some native speakers will ever be)

Enough snobbery from me, back to the topic at hand! What was that, by the way? ... Oh. I take that last statement back! I might need to dial it up to 11 :D

Obviously, you do not read my posts unless there is something that you disagree with in there. English is not my primary language. Actually, my primary language is so different then English that there is no comparison between the two.

I have expressed the desire to clean up my English and make it better.

That's obviously not a desire you wish to fulfill soon, because earlier you said you were too lazy to hold down shift to capitalize I in your writing. How can you judge someone for destroying language when you blatantly do it yourself? It doesn't matter that English is your second language. What f I started complaining about poor grammar while butchering your native tongue?

Hama wrote:
It has happened a few times already. I came to GM a good story i made over three weeks, just to find out they wanted to play MMO on paper. I am not playing with those groups any more. I like to differentiate my tabletop RPG experience from a video game thank you very much. If i wanted to play a video game, i would have been sitting in my home, alone, and playing a video game.

No one said you had to play with anyone like that. The serious problem is that you take a little pet peeve and you start flaming people for it. I recently saw another thread you started for the exact same reason. You are entitled to your opinion, but don't start bashing people with it.

Hama wrote:
You are forgiving enough, i have learned that some things should not be allowed. It makes for a better game. No player has yet left my group for asking them not to use MMO terminology.

In your opinion, yes. So, what is the point of your whole argument? This whole time you argue about what YOU like, with no factual proof. Some people call that trolling. Just because you say it makes it a better game, doesn't make it universally true. Personally, I come from a very deep role playing group. We used to take our roles very seriously. So, many of your same rules would apply to our games. That doesn't give me, or you, the right to tell others how to play the game. Goodluck with your games. They do sound fun!

Sovereign Court

Of course, but I can say how I play the game, and if somebody agrees, good. If not, well, differences of opinion always exist.

Right up until they arrive at your game table though, and then theres no variety, only 'my way or highway' and variety is not allowed.

See there's the kicker.

On one hand you are saying that its ok to be different, but then on the other hand you've started a thread illustrating how much you dislike a certain playstyle to the point of essentially banning it at your table and taking issue with the playstyle.

Dark Archive

Also indirectly insulting people of different opinion.

At my table we play like we play. At other people's table, i play how they tell me to play more or less. If my GM dislikes something greatly, i will make sure not to do it, as not to annoy him and bother him with it. It's common courtesy.

If you for instance really hate the word 'moist', i will refrain from using it around you.

I dislike MMO terminology. All i ask my players is not to use it. If they slip sometimes and use it, well it's a slip. A honest mistake. If a player, however, deliberately uses MMO terminology because he feels slighted by me asking him not to use it because i really dislike it, well, that is mean, and i do not like mean people at my table.

Except if I didn't like the word "Moist" I would not decide not to allow people who like it over my flat, nor would I make threads about it and argue with people over it for 6 to 7 pages.

Sovereign Court

That is your prerogative...

Hey, there's a lot to be said for the word 'moist'.

Necro'd but on the original topic If the said kite the bbeg I would probalby to the fighter you cannot cast polymorph any object to turn the bbeg into a kite and then fly him.

@Hama - at first you seemed way over the top but I've read through this and I'm wondering from the way you talk is using MMO so horrible in and of it self OR was it a last straw from otherwise disruptive players?
