OK DMs!
One of my characters, a magus, wants to go into the Bladebound archetype from the Ultimate Magic. It's on page 47 if you want to look it up. I'll wait . . .
Ok glad you're back. Basically it gives the magus a legendary weapon that grows with the magus. The thing is, it's very clearly expressed that the blade is more of a companion than a servant, it's conscious, and stuff.
So what I'm looking for here is any inspiration we can together come up with for how this blade finds its way into the magus' hand. Is it something the professor has in his house? Is it a treasure in the prison? Is it for sale, ultra-cheap in the scroll shop? Given the thinking-sentient-blade there could be some cool connections with the 4th module having to do with Cthuhlu-like otherworldly stuff - could we foreshadow that?
Recall that Bladebounds get their blade at level 3. So I have about a level to line this story up and make it happen.
Ideas?
Thanks!

It's possible that the professor could have acquired it during his travels (the player's guide to CC gave me the impression he traveled pretty extensively) and it could just seem like coincidence that the blade reacts to the PC. Alternatively, he could stumble across it in the market or even the prison itself.

OK Level 3.. so they are basically in the middle or the end of Harrowstone...
Why not have the bade that he uses to kill one of the "killable" 5 Main guys, be forced into the blade and has to serve the character ...that can make intresting play
OR
find the blade as a Tresure somewhere (after a boss fight, where you make sure he almost dies -> better character bond) and it is occupied by the "soul" of a a good Warden that died
OR
Put in a side quest on the road to Lepidstadt. Ther eare the foothils of the Tusk Mountain ... there must be some buried treasure. He can have a dream about it or he find a MAP/CLUE about such a weapon in the prossesion of a (now) dead Prissioner...
OR
If you wnat it easy. The Temple of Ravengro gives it to him as a reward for eleminating the treat.
I would make sure that he (the player) has a attachment to the blade, something like a near death experiance, or something traumatic...I find that makes always for better gaming.
Said that I encourage my players to get up skills that actually where used by the character.

This is also an interesting idea. Bear in mind that the blade's alignment is the same as the Magus though. An angry ghost shanghaied into servitude is unlikely to be a faithful ally. The blade will probably try to kill him every chance it gets this way. Still, it could be fun...

There are a couple of other threads on the Bladebound, and the most common comparison people seem to be drawing is to the Zanpakutō from the Bleach manga/anime. That is to say that the blades are powerful spirits the characters summon, and are bound to, that take the physical form of weapons.

I know... :)
Its Horror campain...so dont let the player know that an "unwilling" spirit is in the blade...let it slowly slipp...can make a nice side play..Zhangar |

It comes to him at or about level 3?
While the sword has its own goals, it's still of the master's alignment. Think of it as a mini-cohort that already knows its purpose in life.

Let the Sword be left behind by the Whispering Way as it was of no use anymore. Then let the Sword have a mini quest to punish is old master for leaving it, the sword will change allignment to the PC so it can fufill its goal but try to take control over the PC if he resist attack members of the whispering Way.
As it says in UM some swords are inheret, others appears on the magi. people are never sure how the swords end up at the magus.

The magus is my group is searching for his blade at tonight's game. We just finished Harrowstone. On the way north, the magus has to visit the lady of the lake (the big lake north of the village) and defeat some of her enemies to be given the blade.

Of all the suggestions, I'm most interested in the connections to the Whispering Way as you guys suggested. I think it's possible to leave open connections to other interesting events and especially role-playing later on.
What sort of blade and what alignment is the Magus?
I have a thought of a Divine Bonded (Weapon)or Undead Slayer type Paladin, during the campaign to lock away the Whispering Tyrant, fell to an ambush and died an inglorious death. As a stay of Pharasma's judgement, the Paladin's deity (your choice) granted the paladin, as a reward for otherwise exceptional service and virtue, to "live" on in the form of a long sword.
The paladin I have in my head is a Ulfen paladin who was known as "Gallow" The blade would be called Gallow's Lament
