Quote:By that logic/definition, couldn't it then be argued that a leopard(for example) would get pounce&rake as RAW instead of sprint, according to the general rules(it's bestiary entry in this case)? No. Because the Small Cat companion is not a leopard. You are not selecting a leopard (or cheetah) animal companion. You are selecting a small cat animal companion. It is a small cat, a generic animal that represents all small cats. It is not a leopard. (Though the stats given are actually closer to a cheetah, they are not the same. The small cat, though close in stats to a cheetah, is still not a cheetah.)
Aye, you're right. Didn't really look at it that way before.

This might be of interest:
That's it. I'm sick of all this "Cat, Small" b@!!#@@* that's going on in the Pathfinder system right now. Leopards deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine leopard in South Africa for 140,000 Rand (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. He can even cut slabs of solid steel with his claws.
Evolution spend years working on a single big cat and fold its DNA sequences up to a million times to produce the finest predators known to mankind.
Leopards are thrice as feral as Asian tigers and thrice as deadly for that matter too. Anything a tiger can kill, a leopard can kill better. I'm pretty sure a leopard could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Africa? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Zulu and their leopards of destruction. Even in the great safaris, American big game hunters targeted the leopards first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Leopards are simply the best animal that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the Pathfinder system. Here is the stat block I propose for Leopards:
Leopard
Starting Statistics: Size Medium; Speed 60 ft.; AC +7 natural armor; Attack bite (1d10), 2 claws (1d8); Ability Scores Str 17, Dex 19, Con 17, Int 3, Wis 15, Cha 18; Special Attacks grab, pounce, rake (1d8); Special Qualities blindsight 60 ft., low-light vision, scent.
4th-Level Advancement: Size Huge; AC +6 natural armor; Attack bite (2d8), 2 claws (2d6); Ability Scores Str +16, Dex +2, Con +8; Special Attacks grab, pounce, rake (2d6) .
Now that seems a lot more representative of the killing power of Leopards in real life, don't you think?
tl;dr = Leopards need to do more damage in Pathfinder, see my new stat block.
