NPC CR

Rules Questions

Pg 398 Core:
Adding NPCs: Creatures whose Hit Dice are solely a
factor of their class levels and not a feature of their race,
such as all of the PC races detailed in Chapter 2, are
factored into combats a little differently than normal
monsters or monsters with class levels. A creature that
possesses class levels, but does not have any racial Hit
Dice, is factored in as a creature with a CR equal to its class
levels –1.

So if you had 1 Human Level 10 fighter (APL 10), encounter 1 Human Level 10 fighter (CR9), this would be considered an easy encounter?

No, it means that if you had a party of 4 level 10 characters encounter 1 level 10 fighter (CR 9) it would be an easy encounter.

No. A party of 4 10th level characters (APL 10) encounter 1 human level 10 fighter (CR 9), as an easy encounter.

1 Human fighter at level 10 is not APL 10.

RAW your APL is 9 in this scenario, though with only one party member I'd probably put it -2, so 8.

Ahhh! So this would be a APL 9 vs. CR 9 which would be average and thus makes more sense now. Thanks.

Ahh that makes sense. I'll be sure to remember that perhaps when making encounters if I continue at the end of a AP.

Remember though, a lone bog-standard 10th level fighter with NPC gear is basically kibble against an entire adventuring party of 10th level. By himself he is unlikely to be a threat for very long unless he scores a cheap-shot opening attack. You might consider giving him Leadership and the attendant retinue plus cohort to make the fighter resemble a threat. Barring the cheap shot. ^_^

At least, before he's mowed down in a hail of Reflex and Will saves...
