Hiring an NPC

I coulda sworn I had read someplace that you can hire an NPC to perform a skill for you or cast a spell for you to help complete a faction mission for the appropriate cost, but now I cant find it anywhere.

Am I just overlooking it someplace, or did I just imagine it in the first place?

From memory I thought it was in the PA section, and the always available magic equipment.

I found a "+4 to any one skill check" for 1 CPA in that section, buyt find no mention of hiring an NPC to do it for you.

Similarly, could you buy a slave that is trained in a skill and have them make a check for you?

From page 23 of the Guide:

Quote:

Please note that PCs may never purchase the traveling service of
a spellcaster—-in other words, a wizard from the local town is not,
for any price, going to accompany the PCs on their mission into the
nearby haunted castle.

While not listed specifically like this, I would assume this would apply to hiring someone for skill checks as well.

As for slaves, there was this nice long thread around here where it was ruled that slaves are pure fluff and cannot be used to anything that would require rules to be applied.

Guess that makes sense, though that sounds more along the lines of hire them to come with you, opposed to taking it to the skill monkey, much like you would go to the caster to have a spell like Lesser Restoration cast on you.

I imagine that its the same though. :(
