Cheers mate.

As an alternative to just going "me too", would it be possible to have dwtempest's fan-expansions posted or uploaded somewhere? I'd love to see what he's done as well, but from experience, it's somewhat irritating to email things out repeatedly.

Sorry, but since I've received zero feedback on this, I can only conclude that it really isn't worth sharing out anymore. Part of the reason I did share it was to get ideas on how it went and how it can be improved. That unfortunately never happened.

Being able to just d/l it anonymously would make for even less incentive to provide feedback. Plus I am very reluctant to put anything up for download even remotely related to Paizo.

Just so you know: You sent me the puzzles but I haven't run anything within Tazion yet. As soon as I have anything to share, I will do so, but it might take 3-4 more weeks.

Maybe it's the same with most of the other GMs who've asked for it.

Yep, same situation here actually. I'm running SS in a PbP with a LOT of homebrew elements added in. The game will have been running for 1-year come this Thursday and we're just now wrapping up Smuggler's Shiv. It could very well be 6 months (or more) before I'm in a position to give gameplay feedback on this.

I do however, appreciate an alternate method of resolving matters in Tazion and intend to use this.

I was thinking of changing the idols to four separate test. Each testing a an ability or skill. Success at one of the four test traps the person in a 5 ft force cage until the other test are complete or 1 hour passes. Thus only a party can complete it.

The first one is a test of Strength. This test requires one person to inflict a certain amount of damage on the idol in 2 rounds. Failure results in feedback damage equal to the total damage inflicted.

The second one is a test of Wisdom. This idol is 'suffering' from some wound or affliction (randomly determined). The character must heal the affliction, either magically or with a heal check. Failure results in the character catching the wound or affliction.

The third test is a test of Charisma. The character must either use diplomacy or intimidate to make the idol Helpful (or friendly). I have not determine how long the character would get. Failure would result in 1d8+12 damage.

The last test is a test of Intelligence. Written in high Azlanti, it requires an intelligence or linguistic check. It basically states the four test need to be done in alphabetic order. Failure to do it in that order, means those trapped in the force cage "die" (ie take alot of damage). The key is that in High Azlanti, the letters are slightly different then normal Azlanti. The order is Wisdom, Intelligence, Charisma and Strength.

Let me know what you think.

No need to get defensive, sir. I too have suffered the dearth of feedback on my own works (or would-be reviewers who merely say "it's good" without further explanation). I might also recommend taking a look at the Paizo Community Use Policy, of which, the major sins are selling material, claiming it's official material, or using Paizo's maps or art.

Personally, having read through all six AP books a couple of times, I'm less concerned by Tazion and more concerned by the city represented by City of Seven Spears, which as other posters have mentioned, exists as written in the form of seven groups of monsters with no terrain, detailed buildings, traps, mini-dungeons, or so forth, and almost all of the monsters factions have the "must be magically enchanted or exterminated" caveat that outright ruins most chances for diplomacy.

Whether here, or back in the City of Seven Spears GM reference threat, I'd just like to spin up some community development that takes the metaphorical sandbox full of rocks and enriches it into a sandbox with actual sand. ~_^

It sounds kind of fun, but it totally lacks the "Moon, Stars, Dark Tapestry" theme the rest of the temple has got going. Maybe you can come up with a link to that, then it would be great.

I'm sorry it took so long to give you feedback but I didn't think mine would be of particular use as the story focus you were aiming for differed significantly from mine and my group play without a board (making the main puzzle all but impossible to run).

However I used the "clues" that each idol was meant to give as a password the PCs had to supply to it to receive the information it was storing (a hidden Azlanti inscription in the relevant room told them what the password was and a knowledge(religion) check could link the idol's colour to a concept) and replaced some of the guards with the warriors you provided.

Apart from a minor decision making error on starting the boss fight ("We're out of spells and low on hit points but that room looks secure let's break down the door so we have somewhere safe to rest") it went well, made more sense than the original and explained how the other groups found the city.

Even though I didn't use much of it, I still think you should make it available, if only to inspire others to do the same.

My group is currently at Tazion's doorstep so I took a good look at your challenges. It's an interesting take and I like how you found some way to make Issilar work much better within the story and implemented some way for the PCs to find out about his motivation. But here are my two cents:

In a nutshell, I am not going to use it as written because it's a riddle that is solved by the *players* and not by the characters.

More:
It pretty much boils down to what you want to be your game like. I emphasize the ROLEplaying aspect and I encourage my players to mind their characters weaknesses, even though they, as a RL human being, might not share them. For example, if the Wis 9 barbarian comes up with a cunning and intricate plan to save the day, IMO, it destroys the credibility and integrity of the situation. That's why, when a player comes up with something his character usually wouldn't think of, I ask him/her for an ability check of some sort to justify a momentary "bright moment". Having to hold back on something as a player because of your PC's stats might be hard sometimes, but on the bright side the same goes for things the PC is better at than the player pulling her strings. I mean, who would seriously claim to be able to portrait an Int of 22 without outside help? So my players are always allowed to make an ability check to get pointers or ideas their character might realize. That said, let's take a look at what your puzzle does.
As written, there is not a single check involved for a *PC* to understand the pattern or clues, it is completely left to the players to find out. The chariot is a perfect example: AFAIK, there is no imagery of a fiery wagon pulling the sun across the sky in Golarion. It's a real world metaphor the players might know but the PCs would probably call that far-fetched.
Puzzles like that pretty much leave every low-Int character out of the game and force their players to bite their tongue.

In any case, I said before it depends on what you want to be your game like. If you and your players are happy with ignoring you character's limitations and strengths for the time it takes the players to figure out the puzzle it can be loads of fun, too.

** spoiler omitted **...

Thank you both for the very constructive feedback! It is very much appreciated!

I'm already starting to add little puzzles to SS and would love to see yours dwtempest, please.

My players LOVE figuring out puzzles, and while their character may be an idiot, they aren't and it makes them happy.

Spoiler:
alia_jae@yahoo.com

Not here to ask for puzzles. It is awesome that dwtempest has written some and been willing to share them but I would be unable to use them and here's why.

I started GMing Serpent's Skull last September. It took 6 months of 6-8 hours a week gaming to get off Smuggler's Shiv. We got partly into Racing to Ruin before as a group we went 'ugh' and dropped the AP. For time comparison we're 4 months of 4-6 hours a week into Carrion Crown and are almost done with part 4.

The metaplot is good. The execution is poor. The encounters are tedious. But I spent a year before SS preparing for it. Yes, before it was announced. Because in one of those strokes of accidental hilarity I concocted a PC in another game. A trusted-human-slave cleric of Ydersius who was sent to the surface to rally the Coils of Ydersius for the purpose of raising their god. I jumped on SS as the continuation of that plot leading to the grand finale where Ydersius lives again and these new PCs have to save the world.

I am going to rewrite Serpent's Skull. I am going to remake it.

I have remade single adventures within APs but never have I remade an entire AP. This should be fun.
