Untold the Game

Other RPGs

Hey!

This year I found a new RPG called "Untold". It is a card-based RPG (that can also be played as a Battle game)!

The setting, "Splintered Serenity", is a post-apocalyptic science-fantasy universe in which Earth, a magical realm called Ai, and a steampunk world called the Great Machine now overlap to a certain degree. Flux portals and storms can transport or warp people. Undead and external horrors stalk the ruins of Earth!

There are 6 "core" races divided into three groups: Apoc (short for apocalypse) High-bred & Churls (soldiers that survived the Event who were either near their bases, like the High-bred, or the Churls, who are soldiers that have "gone native").

L'na, magical beings that are from Ai that appear to be chimeras of several animals. The Dawns are daytime L'na often gifted with power over the elements, force and life. The Twilights are nighttime L'na that favor subtlety and mind powers.

The Klik are robot-like steampunk-ish creations of the Great Machine. The Tripods are the heavy-duty "blue-collar" workers, while the Rollers are usually more "white-collar".

However, these are all very fluid, and a Klik could learn magic or a L'na could be trained as a commando by the High-bred!

Your character is built from cards with a "Race" card, "Aspect" cards (Body, Mind, Soul), and various "Power" cards!

Powers include things like Leaping, Commando Training, Soul Rend, Regeneration, M201 Assault Weapon, Ice Spear, etc.

Untold isn't available everywhere, but you can order direct from their site:

BTW: This April is their 1st birthday, so they're giving a 10% discount on purchases (w/ the code)!

I also wanted to point out that they have PDFs that allow you to print out your own cards! While they aren't going to be as nice as the professionally printed cards, they're still cool.

The "Starter Set" PDF is only $10, and should be enough to give you an idea if Untold is a game you'd like.

They also have a downloads page with the Primer, plus several "Quick-Start" files to get you going.

They've also been getting some pretty good reviews from places like RPG.net, Troll in the Corner, and EN World!

The game is based around Untold Points (or UP for short), and the concept of "swapping."

The character is built using UP (all cards, even the Race cards, have a UP cost). As your character takes damage, his UP value temporarily goes down, requiring you to "downgrade" your character. This means you can actually see your character weakening as he/she/it loses capabilities!

There are Story swaps, which requires the player to tell the group a little bit about why the character has a certain ability. Site swaps, which require the character to physically be at a location to gain the power. Time swaps which require a certain amount of time to acquire. The last one, Hot swaps, are where the game really shines.

Hot swap cards allow you to swap them into your character deck as long as you have the points in your Swap Buffer. They can then be removed the next round, so that a new power (or powers) can be Swapped! Most "spells" are Hot swaps.

Also, with a few exceptions, the vast majority of the powers have no daily limits. Have the UP to add Fireball to your deck? You can use it EVERY round, all day long!

The folks that make Untold are also working at bringing the Untold setting to Mutants and Masterminds. Here's one of the Iconic Untold characters that can be used w/ M&M:

Now you can get the Untold Starter Set PDF on Paizo!
