XP in Old Adventure Paths

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

Hey everyone, this is probably a really noobie question and I apologize in advance. I'm running a 2nd campaign (Rise of the Runelords) and after running serpent skull, I don't understand how the XP works. It uses the 3.5 MM and there is no XP beside the monsters as there is in the beastiary and I know the progression for 3.5 is different than Pathfinder? so my question is, when using the 3.5MM can i link the CR to the pathfinder CR to XP chart that is on the DM screen?

Im running a 3.5 module right now. Just double check the monsters Cr's haven't changed and if they have adjust the encounter accordingly to what you feel was the original intent. In most cases this means either doing nothing, or adding the advanced Simple template.

Beyond that then just compare their Cr's to the table int he core book.

Yes, that should work well enough if you use the Fast experience chart (which is the most similar to the 3.5 experience progression -- 13 CR=APL encounters will raise you one level).

yes, but pathfinder modules use medium progression, so how does that work?

When you run the 3.5 Paizo modules (including Rise of the Runelords) you should use the fast progression instead. That way your PCs will gain experience at the same rate as the module expects.

The amount of XP each individual creature awards is the same for all the progressions; only the experience limits for the PCs change.

One important thing to note: In 3.5 modules, classed NPCs will have a CR 1 higher than they would have in a Pathfinder RPG module. To keep the challenge at the proper level, give such NPCs an additional class level (or the Advanced Simple template).

so i just need to beef up monsters that are actually classes, by 1 level, and aware XP by matching the CR in the 3.5 module to the CR chart on the pathfinder DM screen?

And count monsters that aren't updated as 1 CR lower.

So, say, using a Ghost from the Pathfinder Bestiary, you're good wth the listed CR, but a a Ghost from the 3.5 MM will be listed CR-1, unless you update it, anyway.

This pretty much only comes up if you're using creatures that haven't been converted.

I don't think this is a good rule of thumb at all. In fact, in some cases the Pathfinder version of a creature is much weaker than the 3.5E version (e.g. griffons or apes).
