Why do so many gamers like non-sequitors, puns, and dry humor?

There are those who call me the punisher.

On an added note I'm surprised we're having a discussion on dry humor and puns with a specific mention of Monty Python and there hasn't been a single quote of it yet.

Although by pointing this out I expect I'll see a sudden surge of them.

Nobody expects Monty Python quotes!

This sums it up pretty well. I reserve the right to enjoy any form of humor I encounter some however are easier to covey at a table than others.

Are you saying some people QUAIL at your jokes?

I'd say they find it hard to swallow, but that would be a poultry joke. Don't want to look like a boob.

Shouldn't that be "Don't want to look like a loon?"

Couldn't resist. ;-)

Besides, boob has other meanings that are much more common.

Because they are punny.

Query as title indicates. Serious question.

Please don't tell me it's because it appeals to a more intelligent mind. Puns are insufferable =(

I'm with you. 9 times out of 10 puns are never as clever as the people who say them think they are.

Not a single one of the puns in this thread made me laugh. Give me the average stupid fart joke any day.

Liberty's Edge

I've never known anyone who uses puns expecting people to think he's clever.

Puns and such regularly appear at my table, and while they're usually not very funny, some will laugh, and some will just groan, and maybe threaten pretend violence against the offender. In fact, that sort of reaction is usually why they make the pun in the first place. It's fun making your friends suffer.

Yeah. Poor boobies and t~~~. They don't really deserve the slander.

Anyway, I'm off to a peep show. 90 minutes of listening to boobies and t%%$!

I use them as a form of torture. People know I'm clever.

Poor, poor birds. Can't even call them by name.

I'm a smart-ass, too. I can't help it. Ask anyone who ever asked me a stupid question or made an unnecessary remark. I'm physically unable to not comment.

Really? No way...your post are always respectful and helpful...and show great restraint to those who make a stupid comment...or ask a stupid question.

I tend to hold back a bit online. But it's still there. I usually make sure to make it clear that I'm joking, and will add a proper answer.

And my definition of "stupid question" might not be completely by the book. If someone just doesn't know much about the game and knows stuff that is basic knowledge for veterans, I don't consider that a stupid question.

But still, if I can misinterpret something said, I will. It's not usually the whole answer (unless the question was already answered in a useful fashion), but it's often there.

Wait.... were you being sarcastic? I'm not really sure.

I like dry humor because I have a perfect deadpan, to where even my wife can't tell if I'm being serious or not.

Yeah you got me I was being sarcastic. :)

Dying of laughter on the inside while keeping a totally straight face is one of lifes guilty pleasures. At least its a 100% fat free indulgence.

I encourage it; as well as quoting lines from gamer style movies as it lends well to the upbeat and fun play and commeraderie between players and gives gamers something else to laugh about and talk about rather than telling the same old story about their character. Why; hmm, probably Piers Anthony's influence; who knows; I think puns are ok if used well and creative humor is appreciated; hehe, I like humor that is not at the expense of someone and can be appreciated by all for a round the table chuckle. People who are so stiff backed that they dont have a sense of humor wouldn't fit into our crowd anyway.

You, sir, are evil. Lawful evil - the worst kind of evil, as it's also lawful.

But when are my posts not helpful? (except for those cases where everything has been answered and I feel there is not enough humour around)

Alright, I'll tell you where my rebel friends are. Just please stop.

I am hurt...I am not evil....probably more CN...with some moments of CG tendencies...

I know there are...I was just pulling your leg.

My dwarven cuisine torture not to your taste?

You can't stand the room of spikes with just a small spike-free circle in the middle?
Can't weather being lashed to a rock in a storm-tossed sea?

Resistance is making this more fun for me!

The sheer amount of Python consumption of the average gamer nearly mandates the sort of humor in question. The vast majority of such gatherings to spectate being predominantly male only reinforces the man-date.

Then again, I'd postulate the notion that the majority of those affiliated with 'That Guy' syndrome are the ones ears-deep in Simpsons and South Park quotes who consider Peter Griffin from Family Guy to be their role model, and Eric Cartman their roll(s) model.

Silver Crusade

Gamers, hackers, and sci-fi fans all seem to be into puns. I suspect that we play with language because language has a logical structure. Puns are a game unto themselves, in essence.

Logic games generally appeal to all three classes of individual; a tabletop session with my friends isn't so much just a story with some random die rolls as it is a really big logic puzzle of sorts.

I'm fine with puns... As long as it's not a pun-pun.

*is whacked with the bad pun stick*

Typically at my old group, puns and the like were so regular it became pretty much the standard way of joking. Some laughed, some groaned, some shook their heads and banged their faces into the table.

What I DO hate though is that damned annoying, non-stop references to something that was funny on it's original topic/medium, but have since become teeth gnashingly, fist clenching, wall-destroying-punch REPETITVE.... Example... Anything with 'towel' in it's name, and three members (half) of my old group would instantly quote Towlie from South Park. "I need the paper towels" "You're a paper towel!" .... Every, single, towel-related item... EVERY TIME! And the old group uses wet-erase markers on a gid-mat, so paper-towels get used a LOT...*quakes with annoyed death-dealing rage*
