I don't have a problem with minor magic (detect magic). I have found that it works best for those rogues who habitually wander off to scout alone, since otherwise, someone else trumps you to it.
In the days when cantrips were limited, the casters may not have had enough instances of detect prepared, so a wand was often a good investment for party funds. Having someone else able to cast it could save everyone 12.5 gold.
One consideration for a rogue player, taking the long-term view; can the spell effect I pick be replicated easily, cheaply, and reliably, via another party member or allied NPC?
Obviously, a wand can be made of any cantrip, as can a scroll, but requires investment in UMD skill for the rogue to access that.
A potion can be made of any spell up to level 3, and is idiot-proof, but only if the spell were one that a caster could place on another willing person.
So maybe spells that are caster-only, affect more than one target, or affect objects?
Looking at the list of wizard cantrips, mage hand and message stand out as being good cantrips for rogues.
Mage Hand is a minor telekinesis effect, good for obtaining light objects from out of reach.
Message is good for an ambush coordinator, or point scout.
Neither work at all as a potion; mage hand isn't eligible, message is, but only insofar as you can talk to yourself.
Of course, you're sat in a cave, in enemy territory, so what might be easy to craft is largely irrelevant to the matters at hand.
Have you allocated enough skill points? I make it 16 (class), +2 (race), +2 (favored).

Items looted from the bodies are inspected, and include:
from the bugbear:
heavy flail
masterwork comp longbow (+3 Str)
studded leather armor
20 arrows
4 +1 elf-bane arrows
4pp
from the swordsman:
masterwork bastard sword
masterwork full plate (incomplete, several plates have not been strapped on)
masterwork heavy shield
potion cure moderate
2pp
Plus, Kavrik's gear:
Longsword
Warhammer
Cestus
Dagger
Javelin(x4)
Chainmail Armor
Tower Shield

Galstok |

Quite the assortment there. Anything in particular that people are wanting? And how should we determine if more then one person wants the same thing; roll for it?
Galstok would be interested in the longbow(and regular arrows), bastard sword(as a back-up only), and maybe Kavrik's cestus(still not sure yet).

Valoria will use detect magic to scan over the collected items.
I've assumed several detects will have been made, and rolled all the Spellcraft checks. You're sure of all the magic that's present.
The group would have searched the swordsman's room, so maybe the remaining bits will still be there for the armour.
The door he came out of led to a short corridor, so the location of his room is still unknown, unless anyone wants to explore there.
That bugbear pest would have been a problem stalking us with those archery items.
Indeed. Catching him indisposed makes a huge difference.
Causing a disturbance up top would bring him out with his bow, and the associated ranger feats, plus favored enemy (elf). I'm sure there's more than a few 2nd-3rd level PCs been one-shotted by him over the years.

hmm, so that talent probably not a good idea for my build atm, if i take finesse rogue, would i be able to retrain the feat weapon finesse?
I'm not averse to people changing their mind about a feat that they rarely, if ever used, but in this case, you have been using it every attack.
If you want to improve your attack rolls, there's Weapon Training, if you want to improve your sneak damage, there's several options for bleed (Bleeding Attack), setting up hits for others (Distracting Attack), knocking opponents off-guard (Slow Reactions), increasing opponent's flat-footed time (Surprise Attack). All of which could end a fight early.
Full list, including non-core options, is HERE.

Valoria Grundmire |

Yep, will spend the time, even taking the time to use the spellcraft to identify items. I guess the +1 elf-bane arrows are the magical items that was detected.
Once the bodies have been removed to cave, group collected all usable items, and secured their resting area. Valoria, would work on her spellbook adding spells, get some needed rest, then prepare the next days spells, identify the items for everyone.

Looks like everyone's levelled up. I've created an alter-alias for Ensu but have yet to paste the stats into it. I notice he had some awful ability scores. If you'd been created in point buy, he'd have 11 total, some of you have the equivalent of more than that in one stat!
He's willing to take suggestions for spell selection next day. As you sit round your camp, discussing the day's events, what aspects went well or poorly? What will you need to prepare for?

Sephird Brookside |

Okay, I took Finesse Rogue, and retrained for Point-Blank Shot
"Well I am not surprised by the junk these goblins had available. I hope that coming in the back door means we'll just have some mopping up to do."
Sephird idly sorts through the gear, setting the bane arrows aside, "good against elves, ehh? I may find these useful, any objections?"
Any volunteers to track loot and group loot? If not, I don't mind setting up seperate spoilers on my character profile to track it. Keep in mind that doesn't necessarily mean I'm carrying the stuff, just acting as the group accountant.

"If that's truly what they are, then Miss Shalelu would be most interested, if only to burn the things."
"Though, it does help explain why her vendetta against that creature has lasted so long."

Galstok |

Yes, Galstok at least part of the night had maintained watch.
During his watch, Galstok inspect the equipment found. Pleasantly surprised at the draw strength of the bow, he offers it up to Tregar when he wakes. "Bow is your weapon of choice, right? This one has a good draw."
"Well I am not surprised by the junk these goblins had available. I hope that coming in the back door means we'll just have some mopping up to do."
"That one," nodding his head towards the formerly armored body,"it sounded like he was waiting for someone or someones." Looking back over to Tregar,How much time you wanna spend breaking him?

"Bow is your weapon of choice, right? This one has a good draw."
He practices the draw a few times.
"Oof. I think this was specially made for that barrel-chested gorilla. I think you'll get more benefit."
"...err, no offence meant."
Quickly changing the subject, he calls to Sephird.
"I think those arrows would do well to be shared; given who our main quarry is."

Sephird will restrict his activities to already opened rooms for now, though he is checking for where the best place would be for the party to hole up for a few hours and rest.
I missed answering this, while discusing levelling.
Assuming you don't venture into any unexplored areas, you all concentrate on cleaning up the signs of the struggle, but not too much, since the goblins are naturally dirty creatures.
Bloodstains on the floor are wiped wherever seen, and the bloody sheets are dragged away.
There will presumably be questions raised over the missing people, but less chance of it being tied to you.
While going back to the cave with the crates, you see the door from this side has been painted neatly with a warning in Taldan (i.e. Common).
"Dangerous sea creature. Do not pass this point."
The words have been defaced with a blade, and replaced with a crude picture of what you assume is a goblin being menaced by an octopus.
If you wish, you believe you can use some of the excess string to fashion a new loop, and hook it back on the nail behind you after you all pass through. Though the door will remain slightly ajar by an inch.

"That one," nodding his head towards the formerly armored body,"it sounded like he was waiting for someone or someones." Looking back over to Tregar,How much time you wanna spend breaking him?
"I'm hoping it won't take too long. And that it won't require any actual breaking. I've been thinking of a way to mess with his head."
He goes over and feels for a pulse.
"He's still alive, and he'll soon be starting to stir. Let's leave him propped up here, bring over some more goblin bodies - the dry ones. And shift ourselves and our gear out of sight."
"Leave him the light, but not too close. We want him to see a bit."
While speaking, Tregar has been tying one end of a long rope round the swordsman's middle.

![]() |

"The ones that have been sucked dry, yes."
Leaving the body propped in the creature's lair, he trails the rope back out to the corridor.
"Curious thing about the human mind; it has a way of imagining things far worse than are actually there. When I was grabbed by that thing in the half-light, I imagined it far larger, with a gaping beak. Seeing it defeated was rather a disappointment."

Ensu, Student of Nethys |

"That's because goblins don't use writing; they believe it steals the words from your head.
Which made it difficult to learn their language. The ancient sages had to capture them and keep them locked up, while they used telepathy on them, but they don't cope well with captivity. They'd bite through the bars, or even their own arms to escape."
"Did you know they have over 50 words for mucus?"

Sephird Brookside |

"If you think that is bad, you should here some of the words they have for dog."
Sephird settles himself down with a bag of... something to lean against. Twitching a bit to get comfortable, he leans back and pulls the brim of his hat low over his eyes. wake me in a couple of hours for the next shift.

Galstok |

I've had time to plot how I'm going to make him sweat. You'd never know my Intimidate went up by +6 overnight, would you?
One great advantage of PBP, time to think.
Galstok finishes up moving the last of their gear and any signs of their presence from the stage in preparation of the main event. "Anything else we need?"

Further to earlier musings on a possible change of thread name, it looks like something may be imminent. Check HERE for details. If this works, I think it will backdate the changes through your post history.
