Just had an interesting thought. I has always bothered me that if I was playing a cleric of the God of Winter/Cold/Ice etc.. that I still have access to fire spells like Flamestrike, Firestorm, etc...further more there are no cleric spells that actually inflict cold damage.
That's when I had the Idea. What if each Domain listed an energy type associated with it if appropriate. Then all cleric spells that inflict energy damage were generic and assumed the energy type of one of your domains. If I have the Air Domain (Energy Type, Electric) then I dont cast FlameStrike but I casst Energystrike and it does electrical damage.
Just a thought.

Everyone would chose to worship a sonic-based deity.

Wow, very constructive.
Nebel has a point, though. I like the idea, and I'd probably go with a more classical concept of the elements:
Water = emotions, healing, nurturing, change
Air = movement, speech, thought
Fire = passion, chaos, fury, creation
Earth = stability, tranquility, strength

+1 NbW41. Everyone would go for sonic.
OFF TOPIC
The whole sonic thing has always bugged me. Any Spell or Magic Item that grants energy resistance provides the same resistance regardless of type (Fire/cold/sonic,etc...). So as far as access to Sonic resistance goes for PCs and Alot of NPC its equal to the rest of the energy types.So really all we have is the fact that not many monsters are naturally resistant to sonic damage. Wouldn't the simpleist solution be give a few more monsters sonic resistance where appropriate. Things like oozes I could see having sonic resistance. Air elementals, etc...demons...why not.
It just seems like they have been dancing around the whole sonic thing since 3.0 and patching it with lower damage dice, not allowing Energy Substitution, no sonic burst weapons only thundering, etc...doing all of this becausse its the least resisted type of energy damage. Just give appropriate creatures sonic resistance.

Sonic is the ultra rare kewl damage type that hangs on the fact that next to nothing resists it. So if you get a sonic damage source, you know that it is your lucky day.
Yeah, sorry for the abruptness of my last post, but the boss walked in as I was replying and I clicked 'submit' and closed the window quickly!
This seems like houserule territory, and just make sure that it only applies to the big four energy types. This is basically allowing someone to use the Energy Substitution metamagic feat for free, without a spell level adjustment. Open it up to force, sonic or any other type of damage and it'll get goofy.
I think the other damage types have a place, kinda like armor-piercing bullets, but the spells are few-and-far-between, often with sub-par damage output.

Agreed. It's also worth noting that with access to 2 domains that every cleric will essentially have the opportunity to grab 2 different energy types. Will this apply to druids, paladins, and inquisitors?

Instead of making it a 'freebie,' you could replace the first level Granted Power with the ability to swap out the descriptor of any spell with an energy descriptor to that of your Elemental type (Air - electricity, Earth - acid, Fire - fire, Water - cold). So the Cleric with the Fire domain would lose access to the Fire Bolt power, but could cause any spell with an energy type, such as Sound Burst, to inflict fire damage instead.
An enhancement would be going so far as to say that non-elemental energy spells could be affected, such as the negative energy spells such as Inflict Wounds.
A reduction would be to have this energy substitution only usable a number of times per day equal to 3 + Wis modifier, as with the Fire Bolt (or whatever) ability is replacing. (And, in any case, it should be limited to Cleric spells.)
