3rd Party Rules for Firearms and a comparative class to the Gunslinger

Gunslinger Discussion: Round 1

I have been reading some of the threads asking for additional firearms to be introduced for the Gunslinger while I know that the Campaign Setting has some more rules it might be worth checking out some of the rules in "Tome of Secrets" and "Kobold Quarterly 13" for firearms, enchantments and shells over straight black-powder. Kobold Quarterly also has rules for the Arquebusier which acts as a interesting comparative to the Gunslinger (as well as being more powerful at the moment) giving you the ability to craft ammo at 1st level and guns at 5th as well as an interesting system for called shots. Arquebusier also allows for the crafting of magic ammo at no additional cost.

Hope this is helpful.

the book steam and sorcery has been a big help for me, including a gun version of the arcane archer

I will say only this: Iron Kingdoms.

Actually, the firearms rules from the playtest are the revised firearms rules for the Campaign Setting (which are on their way back from the printers) and with the exception of the per shot cost due to powder pricing are an across the board improvement.

You might want to check out Black Powder Weaponry for Pathfinder rules based firearms. Best of all it is free.

Iron Kingdoms stuff is okay. If you're playing an Iron Kingdoms campaign. Even then, it's not great. This is coming from somebody who is a Warmahordes fanatic. It's just that they didn't seem to playtest their 3.5 stuff very well. Or edit it well into something coherent, which is sad. I would love it if they ever devoted actual attention to a Pathfinder update - as long as they actually spent some effort on it.

The Arquebusier from KQ is likewise eh to me. Too powerful, in my opinion, too unrealistic, even for a fantasy game, and tries to do too much. Seemed like they were in a big hurry to get something like that out before any competition could.

I still can't find third party stuff that satisfies. I am also still on the fence about the Gunslinger, mainly because like many others here, I am not 100% satisfied with the basic gun rules. But I don't hate what I've seen so far, as some do. I could live with it if I had to. In the meantime, I am happy with coming up with my own stuff.

Liberty's Edge

I know that in our group were going to continue using the old Dragon #321 firearms rules, they weren't to horrible (especially compared to the pile the new rules are) and we still have a copy or two of that issue that hasn't fell apart yet.

So if anyone can find issue #321 it also has firearm rules.

Scarab Sages

Skull and Bones by Green Ronin contains quite a decent selection of firearms - ARRR Jimlad! (which i bought to get my boys into D&D-yes i did PoTC meets D&D)

You can buy it right here on Paizo's site as either a printed copy or a PDF download.

Personally, I agree that the rules in Dragon #321 are better. In fact, I used them to create a new and improved type of firearm made on the plane of Mechanus. They inflict more damage (a pistol does 2d6) and can be reloaded as a move action. They also use a substance called alchemical guncotton as a propellant instead of gunpowder. The guns and propellant are thus more expensive than the ones in the issue.

Alchemical guncotton has the advantage of being non-flammable; it can only be detonated by electricity. Therefore, the guns use piezoelectric ignition; a hammer strikes a quartz crystal, which produces an electric spark.

The best part is, that could actually work in real life. Guns with electric igniters really exist, and piezoelectric igniters are used in hand-held lighters and gas stoves. As far as I know, no one's ever combined them — but there's no reason they couldn't!
