OK, I've gotta know: Does anyone other than WW touch that stuff?

As I've said to you in person, I've visited Scotland in both 1997 and 2019, and the haggis there both times was amazing. Even when WW and ex-CHP absolutely, 100% insisted that they'd secretly imported haggis direct from Scotland, the stuff was inedible.

And the canned stuff is worse. I wouldn't spackle my walls with it.

They have a brand called "Caledonian Kitchen" which the owner of the shop remarked was "actually quite good" and WW really likes. It smells much better than the one they sold at the Berkeley Bowl. No, I don't touch it, but I have a "no organ meats" rule similar to your "no sea bugs" rule.

But, but flaczki!

There was a period in my life when I liked that but now I don't feel the appeal anymore. It worked mainly due to seasoning and I no longer pick spicy dishes.

NO. No flaki EVER.

I love czarnina, but that's my limit for creepy ingredients in my food.

I'd rather have flaki than czarnina, on the other hand... :P

It really does frustrate me when supposed "experts" who've spent years studying the science behind a phenomenon know even less about it than a local.

The reason Albany's weather is so ridiculous is that we have a natural cold current (the appropriately-named California Current) running north to south along the coast. It's why surfing or swimming in the ocean in the Bay Area requires a wet suit: Our water is almost always in the high 50s; not exactly pleasant for being in. The ocean breeze coming from the west blows through the Golden Gate, and fortuitously straight over Albany, giving us our own year-round air conditioner. It's hard for Albany to go outside of the 48˚-68˚F range because of the wind blowing over the current. (The current warms up a few degrees in the summer and gets us into the low 70s.)

EXCEPT... once or twice a year we get an "inversion" where the wind changes direction and comes out of the valley instead. Our rare 100˚+F days are almost always the result of inversions.

So the paper said, "We're going to have an inversion over the weekend. Expect temperatures in the low 60s."

I didn't believe a word of it. I opened up the house at 10:00 am. It's now a balmy 72˚F outside with a wind that feels even warmer than that.

Yep. Inversion. Take the normal temperature for the day and add at least 15˚F. "Low 60s" my heinie!

Yeah, when I was in Istanbul my friends insisted that I eat something very similar to that because it was a "Turkish national dish". They drowned theirs in vinegar and black pepper, but it still wasn't enough to mask the appallingly foul aroma of the original ingredients.

Pretty much the only dish that I know of that was originally developed to mask rotting/spoiled/otherwise terrible meat and that tastes good now almost anywhere you get it in the world is curry.

Though I've been to London. You can get some of the best curries in the world there, and some of the worst....

Pfeh, London. Bradford is the place to go for curries (possibly Birmingham as well)

They also sell tripe at my local market, though I have never eaten it, and I'm not sure I ever will, since it is most likely pig-based, and I am no longer eating pork.

If you'd like to give it a try, check at Polish shops, they might have chicken tripe, it is eaten as well.

How meticulous is my record-keeping?

I just learned that I bought the Celica on Friday, January 19, 1996 for $19,425.62.

And not only is it in my financial records, but I have the original paperwork and even have the check number.

And I am the *less* pack-ratty member of the family!

EDIT: And yeah, if someone said, "Hey, NobodysHome! Wanna buy a car that gets 30 mpg city, 35-40 mpg highway, that'll last virtually trouble-free for 25 years, all for the low low price of $34,518.18?" (the price adjusted for inflation), I'd jump at the chance.

EDIT 2: And in a rather prophetic moment, the money we paid for it (even with my parents paying half) was the absolute last of the lifetime savings my parents had built up for me for college. So just as I was about to graduate I was dead broke, but I had a new car. Kind of poetic.

Today's culinary failure - I put some pork meat into the pot and fried it a little bit. Then I added some canned peaches and canned pineapple. So far, so good. I done that before and the results are tasty... There is a lot of fruits that can be added to meat - fresh or canned, generating wonderful results before adding rice (or eating the resulting sweet stew with potatoes)

But today, I made a grave error of judgement and added an orange.

Maybe it was the fault of the specific oranges, but it ended a terribly fibrous and not particularly pleasing addition to otherwise fine meal.

However, czarnina is the soup of the gods.

Provided that the gods like soup made from ducks' blood, prunes, sultanas, and homemade noodles.

It tastes better than it sounds.

I used to get it at Przybylo's White Eagle in Niles, Illinois. That was the restaurant and banquet hall across the street from the Polish Catholic cemetery. I lost track of how many family wedding and funeral banquets we went to there over the years.
It's also the last place I went for dinner with my Aunt and Uncle before they died. Sadly, that night, the soup was only mushroom barley.

Nope, not going to eat that either.

We got three inches of snow, which means I finally have something to do!

Boulder Carving had to be put on hiatus for a couple of weeks on account of the bitter cold so this is definitely a welcome change.

Maybe you should take up pebble carving. That way you can do it indoors.

Actually the boss is setting up an indoor shop so I can do pebble mosaics set in concrete during the winter.

So you're not that far off.

Why did I read that as "during the war"? But, hey! Cool!

A man walks into a bar and orders a beer. While pouring it, the bartender says "You look kind of tired. Everything okay?" The guy replies "Yeah. I just did some long distance swimming. Made it 10 miles." The bartender says "10 miles! That's incredible. I'd struggle to do that on a bike." The guy takes a sip of his beer and says "Well, yeah. Bikes are no good in the water."

Three ducks are walking on the beach. The first duck says "Quack." The second duck says "Quack quack." The first duck pulls out a gun and shoots the second duck. The third duck, shocked, says "Why'd you do that?" The first duck puts the gun away and says "He knew too much."

I had an idea for the monster for today...

I was happily designing it in my head until it occurred to me that it might not be inappropriate for at least a few more weeks...

Now I need to start with something else while the idea I had is saved for later.

Might not be appropriate, dammit.

Or might be inappropriate...

*sigh*

Of course I noticed that after the editing window, because of course.

Now I am sort of stuck, with two ideas being put aside in the middle because I didn't like the direction their execution was going...

We are getting another round of snow, this time I don't start until 9 am.

Also, it looks like we're only getting about an inch of snow, as opposed to the 4 we got the night before.

We're not getting any significant snow until Friday.

Huh. It's almost as if each time you get snow, we get a system a few days later. Almost like some sort of air stream is directing it to the east coast. Funny that...

It's Impus Major's first day of school!!!

These will be his first in-person classes in almost 2 years (since March of 2020). Considering he had a 3.4 GPA when attending class in-person, and he hasn't managed anything above a C in any class since then, we are all excitement. (Except the inevitable speeding ticket he's sure to get driving in to school because of all his excitement.)

EDIT: And yes, in spite of all my urging he failed to practice on Impus Minor's OneWheel, so he's going to have to walk across campus to all his classes. DVC isn't exactly "mountainous" terrain, but it's not flat, either, and I worry about him walking up hills right now.

I'll simply say that I'm glad I didn't bet *any* money on *any* game this year. The closest I can come to caring about the rest of this season is if it's Cincy/Rams in the big dance.

But, meh -- sportsball.
