Sorry, Freehold.

Yeah, it tends to take a lot of applications for something to stick.

Especially without your clothes on?

Is that coconut oil you've greased yourself up in?

Good luck with it!

So, when I went to this small town New Jersey client last, it took me 3.5 hours to drive because of obscene traffic. I left myself a lot of time today and (what do you know) I get here in under 90 minutes. Hooray for being 2 hours early! [/sarcasm]

Plenty of time to see the sights! :D

It's the day before America closes down and goes full-blown pyromaniac. So everyone in the States and outside the States if you're vacationing this weekend,

...I wish a safe and sane Fourth of July. Hot Dogs and Hamburgers for everybody.

I'm gonna be slavin and cookin in the kitchen tomorrow.

Fourth of July? Already? Hadn't we had one recently, mere year ago?

The Exchange

Yes exactly a year ago.

The Exchange

We like them at least yearly.

The Exchange

Happy ID4 folks!

Old job is done. Just completed the last drive home. Now it's time to mow the lawn and help pack. We leave at 2 am CT Thursday morning heading to Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico. Then it's camping for a night. On Friday we head to Santa Fe with a stop in infamous Roswell, NM.

I logged off of LotRO and turned on Chrome for a moment before going to sleep just in time to see Patrick Curtin's sad status on facebook...

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. It is very hard to explain the grief, it is almost a physical thing, a weight of the soul. Yet empty as well. I do appreciate your kind thoughts, they do mean a lot. Have a good 4th to those of you within the confines of America, have a good weekend to those without.

I am deeply sorry, Patrick. No loss I have suffered can compare to what you are going through now, but I sympathize in what weak measure I can.

Love and prayers, brother.

Damn it, why are mythological women and legendary heroines (that were not wholly fictional) so hard to find?

I've only found a few, like Tomoe Gozen, Boudicca and Penthesilea to name some.

Probably because the majority of myths were written about and by men. Most female characters in them serve as little more than plot points or love interests most of the time.

Sovereign Court

There was the queen in Cuchulain legends. She wasn't the hero, but she was pretty heroic in stature and description - the one who started the war over the bull? Too lazy to look up her name on my phone. ;)

Try Laxdæla saga.

Patrick, I was so sorry to hear about Ally last night. Words feel so inadequate. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

The Bible (and its apocryha) has Iris and Judith. And what's-her-name, the sister of Aron or Moses.

And there's always Sigrid Storråda - who may or may not be an actual historical figure. (The current opinion would be to say that she was, but her legend's been a bit overblown.)

Yael pulled off one cool thing in the Bible.

And how have I not heard of this Sigrid?

We hadn't conquered you yet when she was around. (Although Åland and part of the coast may have had some settlers from Sviþiod arriving.) ;)

Edit:

Spoiler:
Added smiley to make it clearer that the post is a joke.

Þiod being an Old Swedish word for people.

Also, she might or might not be daughter of Polish prince and sister of the first Polish king. We'll probably never know for sure.

Well, Dido is a pretty cool female character from antiquity.

The tale of how she escaped from Tyre, fooled her brother King Pygmalion to take away her husband's great treasure (by switching the whole thing for bags of sands and throwing them in the sea, making the King's men desperately dive for them), convinced King Iarbas of the Berbers to grant her "just as much land as can be encompassed by an oxhide" (then cutting the oxhide in thousands of pieces in order to encircle an entire hill, which would then house the city of Carthage), and finally running a sword through herself and jumping inside a pyre in order to both keep her word and avoid Iarbas from destroying Carthage.

She basically created Carthage from nothing but guile and wits.

Dido's one of my favourite characters from the age.
