Bleargh!

Yet again, testing one of my old practices, and I have to adjust it because engineering modified the text field to disallow more characters. (In this case, my "Description" field suddenly won't accept apostrophes.)

What does it tell you when your engineers are fighting to push your software back to the 1990s, instead of spending 5 minutes to manage special characters properly?

Grrr...

EDIT: Much like the Hulk, when I get angry enough my clothes burst off...

They're both good in different ways.

I feel robbed that we never got Robin Williams as Beast.

It tells me that someone's time-travel experiment succeeded and your company got programmers from the 1990's.

Utter b&$+#~+s of a reason. Will Smith didn't try to be Robin Williams, because that is obviously impossible.
Maybe that's true, but that's the reason for the widespread dislike. It's simply because Will Smith is not Robin Williams, and Robin Williams is one of the most beloved comics and actors of our time. And at this point I'm going to go way out onto the speculative branch...I don't think I'm wrong but I don't have a ton of evidence either...I think it came out too soon after his death.

Wholehearted agreement. Bad timing on Disney's part, but they are known for caring solely about money.

Quote:
As for my own personal opinion on Will Smith, I find him to be an amazing actor, but seemingly only when he wants to be. Muhammad Ali. The Pursuit of Happyness. The man is extremely talented. When he wants to show that. And at other times he's Will Smith.

I want to agree with you, but as a black man watching another black man *literally* grow up in Hollywood at a time where his level of success was unthinkable, I am all for him being Will Smith when he wants to be. He is also going to have to accept that some of his high concept stuff isn't going to reach most people/makes him seem even more egotistical than he actually is, and that can be a bitter pill to swallow for someone so talented.

Maybe it's a girl thing, but I despised the original Aladdin. Jasmine was pathetic. ("The world is so unfair! I'm going to go pout with my tiger and wait for a prince to rescue me!") Robin Williams was the only redeeming factor.

The new film is a definite improvement.

I never got that vibe off of her. She complained she'd never gotten to do anything outside the palace...so she promptly leaves the palace to try and do things. She is upset about the marriage situation...and she makes it very clear she is going to fight against this rather than take it lying down. She plays an active role in trying to distract Jafar at the end...which only fails because Aladdin is the least stealthy rogue ever. Idk.

Aside from the trailers being off-putting (I don't really know why), my main beef with the remake is basically that it's a remake. Disney's remakes have...not earned any favor with me. Their new Beauty and the Beast went out of its way to desecrate every aspect of the original. Dumbo was awkward af. They're desperately trying to recapture the feel of the originals and put a lens of postmodern self-awareness over them, but...the originals were sincere fairy tales. The "nudge-wink, we read internet comments and listened! We're hip!" aspect is tonally dissonant unless baked in from inception.

Disney used to be known for its innovation. For its stories, twists though they were on folktales. They've lost that. For every fresh idea they get like Moana, there are three lazy nostalgia cash-ins. Especially since Disney seems to have changed its business model to "we are Borg."

interesting.

Very interesting.

Because it's Aladdin.

Doesn't matter who they cast it will still be Aladdin.

As I said prior, you gotta like what you gotta like.

Or, you know, NOT in this case. ;)

Aladdin will always be special to me, (and my wife) because going to that movie in theaters was our first ever date. (She blushed when we accidentally put our hands in the popcorn bucket at the same time. She's adorable)
And then we got married the same year that Aladdin and Jasmine did, and spent our honeymoon in Disneyworld, and of course took pics with Aladdin & Jasmine. ;P

Yep, been, what, 25 years now? She doesn't blush (as much) anymore, (I've been a BAD influence) But she still loves Aladdin. And it has nothing to do with Robin Williams. ;)

I was an avowed Disney hater until GothBard insisted that we go see the latest Disney movie: A trivial little thing called The Little Mermaid.

A few years later, I was proud to complete my collection of ALL of Disney's animated films when I got an imported Japanese laserdisc of Song of the South.

Dammit, Nobodyshome, come back to the hating side of the force!!! Disney must be defeated!!!

After having only worked once in the last however long it looks like the snow is hitting the fan for the next week.

Tomorrow night we're supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow, followed by a separate 3-6 inches of snow Saturday night into Sunday morning and then another 2-6 (at least) inches of snow on Tuesday into Wednesday.

It really is terrifying how flakey most contractors are.

Yesterday our contractor was supposed to show up, grout the tile, finish the mantle, and be done. Instead, he showed up 2 1/2 hours late, went over the appearance and style with GothBard, took the needed measurements, and then went, "To the store to get the parts, and then my shop to build it out."

His last words to me were, "See you tomorrow between 8:30 and 9:00 am!"

And of course it's now quarter to one and he's not here, hasn't contacted us, isn't responding to texts, and this is all absolutely normal.

The man does amazing work. But his ability to keep a timetable is, er... lacking...

Yay for arrivals and departures!

And my contractor may be a flake, but my loan officer is so desperate to get us through that I worry about the industry as a whole around here. I know house prices have gotten so high that sales are through the floor, and there's a real worry about a pricing collapse as a result, but seriously. I'm getting one-hour response times. It's very rare that a corporation can get ahead of ME on paperwork, but they've done it.

The fun part'll be the whole, "Hurry hurry hurry! Get the paperwork in! Get the disclosures signed! Get it to the underwriting department...
...6 months later...
...the underwriting department has approved you! Rush rush rush! Sign sign sign!"

If I didn't know there was going to be a 1-2 month delay before getting the HELOC upgrade, I might actually take a few minutes to deal with the paperwork now instead of after work...

Thats... wow... I'm going to have to let that sink in for a bit.

Is that not used outside of the U.S.? It's even got its own Wikipedia entry and everything.

But yeah, at least around here, any time a larger whole breaks into competing, uncooperative pieces, we call it "Balkanization".

It is used here, occasionally.

We call it kavelen. After the rules for the rededvision of land farmers use. (breaking up bigger pieces to form other pieces so all your fields are eventually all adjacent)

Since the Balkan war is pretty fesh here, its quite a jarring term. MrT was nearly send there, but his draft was almost up so het got out of it.

I enjoyed it while watching, for the most part.

But the way it intentionally violated the original story (and I use that term specifically to follow in Scint's post) can reflect poorly on other films, regardless of whether or not the content was bad (which it wasn't).

Mochi is usually supposed to be filled with something or associated with something else. It's not much of an "on its own thing" that I've seen.

My brother-in-law got me a box of mochi for Christmas - curious, he got another for himself, too. He tried one - the sesemi Mochi - and thought he'd done a terrible job, as it was kind of bland and disappointing (technically sweet, but just not very great).

When I got it, I tried the same and somewhat agreed - it was good enough to eat (he was concerned I'd hate it), but when I tried the white powder mochi the whole thing was almost painfully sweet (but good), and the brown powder mochi (look, I don't know the names) was on point. It was absolutely great.

(And yes, there is nothing quite so hilarious as the poor Japanese actor trying to voice Uncle Remus as low as he can possibly go, then have Uncle Remus break into song (they used the original audio, not Japanese translations) and think, "Wow, is James Baskett only one octave lower than his Japanese dub, or is it two?")

<Ignoring the obviously dated and historical/racial issues around Song of the South.>

It's been a long time since I heard James Baskett singing in that, and I've never heard the Japanese dub, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if it's 2 octaves.

Man, James Baskett is a treasure. His voice is truly a wonder of human ability.

It gets better. MUCH better. And does an excellent job of tying the whole "Disney afternoon animated universe" stuff together. DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, TailSpin, Goof Troop, Gummi Bears, all that stuff technically takes place in the same world, just different locations and time periods, and the new DT ties them all together even more strongly.

So, we all know I'm an idiot. This much is a given.
But.
Being that this is the first week back at school, I'm a bit preoccupied.
And since today was WW's payday, I'd been waiting to stock up on both groceries and gas.
But I stayed an hour late at school doing emails to parents and the classroom laundry and, well, stuff, and then left in just enough time to get Teensy Valeros to ballet class and then run with Hermione to the grocery store, and then back to pick up Val, and then home to make dinner, and... yeah.
I ran out of gas in the fast lane on the freeway after dark.
Luckily, WW was only a few miles behind me on his way home from work, so stopped to pick up a Jerry can and a couple of gallons and then came and rescued me, and yelled at me a whole lot.
Not the best evening ever.

So, I have been to Sobo, home of the Best Ramen on Earth (though Hi insists that there were places in Japan that rivaled it). And they had homemade mochi. And yes, it was fairly "meh".

Then they have frozen mochi, which is a dessert that the heavens sing about.

(Frozen mochi is mochi wrapped around ice cream, whereas "regular" mochi is mochi wrapped around (as GothBard puts it), "Something more room-temperature-friendly.")
