Mrgh. Still in the hospital. They're pretty sure he's got some kind of viral infection. Still getting high fever, but Motrin takes care of that. His heart rate is still higher than it should be, though.

They took X-ray of his chest to check his heart and lungs. And they want to give it until 24 hours after his first symptoms (which would be later tonight), to see if his blood culture shows anything new.

If nothing bad pops up from all that, they may let us take him home. I'm hoping that's the case because he really wants to go home.

Best wishes that he heals up soon. It should just be a virus. I scared the absolute shit out of my mom just like Charlie did when I was his age- it's something to do with the body kind of overreacting to stuff. Some of my earliest memories are sitting in the hospital, looking around, wishing that there was an atari somewhere.

I...may have swapped "DMing" in there, looked at my meticulous CoT notes, and mashed STRONGLY AGREE.

Not just yeah.

HECK YES (been watching adventure time).

I have found that I must conform to my players like water conforms to a vessel. The "I'm the dm, sit down, shut up and march through this dungeon!!" approach does not work for me.

Definitely. And this is why I can't GM in a live setting. PBP is fine because I have that minute to take a breath and figure out what's next (cause who actually bothers planning? I mean really...) but in real life it's just too stressful. Even with a computer right there in front of me I'm too slow. I greatly respect those who can do it. It's an amazing skill.
To me, it's style, not skill. I can't do PBP to save my life as a player or as a DM because I can't sit down in front of the computer that long. PBP simply isn't my style. I need people around me to game with or be live if I'm going to be in front of a computer.

A lot of PBP is too slow, but for me a good fast-moving PBP is awesome. I keep a couple of slower ones on the back burner that I joined as a player forever ago because they're awesome, but I usually get distracted by the one (soonish to once again be plural but currently only have one back up and running after a needed hiatus for RL) since it takes a lot of attention. Definitely not the format for everybody. But it really works for those of us who rarely get to game in person. :)

+1. Poor Charlie. :(

I've got no issue with live games or PBP. Just my newbie inability to react to "You did what? Hang on, I think the AP accounts for...killing the boss three chapters early."

I really still do want to run a PbP here, and invite FAWTLites to play in it.

I just need to work out the story beyond the sparse framework I have in mind, and put together a not-too-humongous info-pack for the players to get them enough info about my homebrew world to jump in.

Hey, maybe I'll get to play a not-charisma character!

And this is why we ditched APs. I tried to run one once and totally crashed and burned in my one attempt at in-person GMing. Another player tried his hand at GMing using an AP. Went great for a while but by the end we'd gone so far off the rails he just gave up. And the usual GM tried one and gave up partway through for the same reason. He says at least when we screw up modules it doesn't tank the whole campaign.

I'm trying to write up a homebrew one that's sandboxy enough to hide the fact that you're on a long string of fetch quests.

Does the order of the fetch quests matter? Some kind of adventurers board where they can pick and choose what quest to do is great if it doesn't.

Yep. Also doesn't hurt that it's in a prison, so I'm largely replacing the idea of money with a system of "I'll owe you one," favors being more instantly redeemable than gp.

I'm almost done with RotRL's for my Houston group. It was a great learning experience as it was really my first time as a GM and I had little RPG experience in general.

I do find the AP somewhat confining in that I wasn't comfortable straying too far off script. Now that my confidence has improved, and I have GM'ed a home brew campaign for my family, I feel more comfortable just winging it. It helps that my mindset is that to accommodate what ever my PCs are trying to do as much as possible. Although, it may not have the results they intended.

Downside is wanting Emerald Spire for it.

Also, aaaargh! *bangs head on wall*

*Goes back to answering player questions/character pitches*

It's not that they're bad individually. It's that there always seems to be a large pack of the ones that require long answers all at once.

Heh. Kidlet is laughing like crazy while watching Tom and Jerry. That's a good sound. :)

Winging it is definitely an acquired skill, and one that takes a lot of practice. :)

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at cartoons than the Tom and Jerry and Wile E Coyote/Roadrunner ones. I laughed myself silly as a kid, rooting for the Coyote. I hear he became a super genius or something.

Looney Tunes and Animaniacs are where it's at.

I liked Animaniacs, but I didn't fall in love with it the way two of my friends from college did. I'm fairly sure the one of them who had kids did so solely so she could watch more cartoons without raising eyebrows.

It helps that I was about four when it aired.

Wow. You didn't get any of the old school things I linked a page ago, did you?

Nope!

YIKES. I forgot how overpowered Randy could be with his familiar and his cheap shot attacks.

I used to watch the Roadrunner on Saturday mornings. My uncle stopped by one morning and he and my dad noticed the cartoon while they were chatting. They ended up sitting by me and watching, laughing like crazy. It became a Saturday ritual. I loved it.

I miss them both. <3

Okay... so Outlook.com is like hotmail.com but slower, and with an uglier layout... thanks Microsoft, guess I'll start giving people my gmail address instead.

Scarab Sages

Well, the X-ray confirmed the boy has a touch of pneumonia. So they've given him some medicine through his IV. His fever is still doing the yo-yo, and his heart rate is still high. They've been alternating Motrin and Tylenol. Not sure if they'll keep him another night or not. Won't be surprised if they do.

If they keep him the wife is gonna stay so I can brin her parents to the airport tomorrow.

Either way, it's gonna be a long couple of days, methinks.

That's got to be scary, AZ. Good thing you didn't hesitate about bringing him in. Hope he feels better soon.

Oh ouch. Good luck with that. I've had pneumonia and it was brutal. Can't imagine what it's like on a kid.

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that man. I hope he feels better soon...Pneumonia can really take it out of you.

Not familiar with them either. Due to age as well, but moreso genre. None of those are really my thing.

When I think late 80s/early 90s music I think more along these lines.

Scarab Sages

Thanks for all the well wishes folks. He seemed to really be doing better this evening. They still wanted to keep him tonight, as I thought they would. They started him on a second round of antibiotics, and were going to keep him on IV fluids all night so as to reduce the chance he'll dehydrate.

So his mommy stayed with him. I'm home for tonight, and have to bring my in-laws to the airport early, after which I'll be back to the hospital to see my boy and hopefully bring him home.

Wait how would you feel old I don't even listen to stuff from my lifetime a lot and I am 21.

My parents sometimes are surprised when I listen to music that is older than me.

I must admit that I discovered lots of music from eighties in this millenium, including Iron Maiden... I wasn't very musical person in the late eighties or ninties.

Considering in 1990 I was five... ;) Yeah my dad introduced me to Metallica when I was in junior high (so around 1996-9, somewhere in there) and it just went from there.

My main discovery around 1990 (possibly a year before or after) that I now love is Queen. My parents had a tape of their music in car and we were listening to it while going for family trips.

Thumbs up to that Drejk =) Blitz a few pages back is certainly proof of Queen fandom here =D
