Yes? No? Am I close?
Cab agencies. But instead of a cab company with dedicated drivers and stinky yellow cars, it's comprised of people who register to be drivers in their off-hours with their own cars, managed by an app.

I have to admit, not having heard of Uber is... impressive.
But yes, in response to cab companies' near-monopoly on point-to-point travel, combined with ludicrous fares ($0.60 per 1/6th mile? Really?), a "new breed" of point-to-point ride companies have spawned that espouse the Dilbert Principle of, "We abuse our employees and pass the savings on to you!"
So for example, Uber treats all its employees as "private contractors" (so no unemployment insurance, no medical coverage, no insurance costs), they drive their own cars (so low maintenance costs), and they strongly discourage tipping (cutting another cost), so while a cab from San Francisco to Albany can easily run $80-$100, an Uber ride is usually much closer to $25. (Their fares vary based on time of day, usage, etc.)
So basically a ruthless business model that abuses employees to undercut cabs.
But it works.
EDIT: And most of the "private contractors" are students or retirees or other people with time on their hands just trying to make a few extra bucks, so they don't mind having to cover all the insurance and car upkeep on their own.

I've heard of Uber, but have never actually known what it is.
I've heard of it in:
- a random aside in Super Beard Bros. commentary on games they're playing (the aside had nothing to do with the game itself - I think they said something about how they bullied Uber? Or something? I don't know, I was distracted and it was a while ago)
- a YouTube commercial about that Alexa thing, where someone in a bee costume can't get their keys and asks Alexa to call Uber
- your post, now
- probably a few other places
... but that's about it. From context clues (mostly the advertisement, followed by your post) I guessed it was like a cab or something.
And here I thought you a man of culture.
I don't know how people keep getting that impression...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My wife delivers food for Uber Eats and at least one similar company. The food delivery charges are ridiculous, I don't know who pays $10 extra dollars to have a $5 burger delivered from two blocks away.
If you've got a car anyway and are looking for a few extra bucks, driving for these companies...is a way to get them. But I'm very much hoping that my unicorn gets a full-time phlebotomy job this year.

That's just... beautiful, really. Just beautiful.
Here I am, looking at this post and laughing like mad even though I didn't understand a single word.
But something in my damaged brain seems to find it funny anyway.
Edit: 14 minutes later, Kileanna realized what TL was trying to say and laughed again.

Wait, so... they're also a delivery company?
I... I just... I don't... I'm okay. I think I need more medicing. My baon hirt.
Think of Uber as a giant organizational entity: "We find people who are willing to drive around to make a few extra bucks, and we hook them up with people who are willing to pay a few extra bucks to get somewhere/have food delivered/whatever else you might need a car for."
So imagine being 15, unable to drive, and being able to call that older friend who can already drive, and saying, "Hey, xxx, since you can drive, can you do yyy for me?"
That's Uber in a nutshell.

OK, that's definitely not funny.
I hope you get well soon.I spent a couple of really bad days, but today I'm feeling great (probably I'm just happy for feeling OK). I have a couple of days in a month that I am replaced for a hungry ravenous monster.

NobodysHome’s Life of a Chaperone, Part VIII: An Easy Day (for once)
So, one of the most common, perfectly-valid complaints about Disneyland is the strictly-enforced sense of "family-friendly". The staff are trained within an inch of their lives to be cheerful and friendly. The effective security (that which you cannot see) is extremely tight. It's rigid control that's Lawful Neutral with a capital 'L'. But that's what makes it really easy as a parent or chaperone. You just turn your kids loose, and you have no concerns about fights breaking out, or other lecherous teens (or even older men) harassing your girls, or whatnot. Disney is in control, and Disney will not permit any deviation from a sense of safety and security. Sucks when you're a Chaotic teen and you want to rebel against it. Great when you're a Lawful adult and all you want is for the kids to have fun without having to worry about any of the usual nonsense that occurs at fairs and theme parks nationwide. (I'm looking at you, Great America!)
So for once I had an easy day of it...
** spoiler omitted **...
and people wonder why I rail against Disney!

I mean, look guys... guys, look... I mean, look, guys, look - I'm a hick, okay? Like, guys, I'm a hick.
I don't know about these things.
I also don't know if they exist in Florida? Or maybe they do?
Either way, I also have a great rock that I highly enjoy living under.
it's important for someone as outgoing and urbane as me to remember that not everywhere is Brooklyn and that this is sometimes the only place where they one does not feel like a freak or weirdo.
I had more written, but the internet connection crapped out. Thanks mta! You f+$&ing suck most times.

This is MY bubble.
the idea of a naked woman in a bubble both fills me with hope(naked woman in a bubble! This brings new meaning to the phrase funko POP!) and dread (naked woman in an indestructible bubble. Is this some new torture? Has orthos come up with some way to punish me for my lecherousness at long last?!)

Oh, no. No, wait. This was messing with me because you never actually thought I was a man of culture?! How dare you, sir, I-
