Yeah, today a regulation making covering your face obligatory hit, though it can be an actual mask, a scarf, or a chimney (which I got on Tuesday).
Listen to the dragon. He saved us all a loooooootta time.
(Well, he didn't save me a lot of time, but in my defense (sort of) I didn't see this post 'cause I was making that monstrosity. Also, it took longer as I was frequently interrupted. Gimme some slack! XDCompletely coincidentally (not really, that was the reason why today and not just after the Easter), a number of masks was supposed to be delivered to post offices this day and sold from there. No idea how many of those were actually delivered.
Without, in any way, making light of the situation itself (as it is quite serious), I can't help but be amused that the post office is having delivery problems to themselves.
(This is not intended as a knock on your postal system; the USSR and just-post-Soviet systems were not that great - I can't tell you how many of our things just, "disappeared" en rout - but I don't know what it's like there these days and cannot comment on it directly. Mostly it's just an amusing juxtaposition of the concept of those who deliver having trouble delivering to themselves. In practice, however, this can have very legitimate, very real non-corruption/non-incompetence/non-other-internal-failures reasons.)

Ragadolf wrote:Trickle charges are good if your not starting your car often. (Cars ARE made to be driven often. This long-term stay at home stuff they do not like.)
But speaking from my 'expertise' ;P as a former auto-parts salesperson, you do not have to use a trickle charger ALL THE TIME. Just for a few hours every couple of days or so that you do not drive your vehicle.
And most (at used to,) common chargers will have a couple of settings on them, 'trickle /slow charge' and 'Jump start'.
For heavens sake, IF your trying to trickle charge your battery to keep it functional, DON'T use the jump start setting! ;P(Common sense I know., but Common sense isn't so common around these parts it seems) :)
That bold part is important. The chargers they had either did not have the float charge feature (at this point almost all of them do), were left on the car for days at a time, were questionable batteries to start with...you get the picture.
Any company that makes car batteries - Duralast, Diehard, AC Delco, Optima, whoever - that also makes a trickle charger/jump starter is going to be just fine.
And the car sitting a week without going anywhere isn't going to hurt it. A couple weeks won't really hurt it. Is it going to sit a month or more? Ok, think about throwing it on the trickle charger for a few hours every couple weeks.
A friend of mine has a '92 Trans Am that he likes to keep in as good of condition as he reasonably can. Over the winter the car doesn't come out of the garage. He throws it on the charger every other week. Once the weather gets nicer he simply drives it 50-100 miles once a month and doesn't worry about the charger. He's never had to jump start it.
EDIT: He does replace the battery in it every 3-4 years rather than 4-6, but that might be more precautionary and a "but this is my baby" reaction than anything else.
Thank you for the information.
I have noone to discuss car stuff with, really. And moms information is DECADES out of date.

While I have all of you're attentions just happen to be at the top of the page, if any of you know quibblemuch from around the forums here (I've had numerous pleasant social interactions with the guy), he's just released a book.
While it seems fun for my (kind of like the kind of thing my boys'd love), the more pertinent info for most of you is that he's also looking for local brick and mortar stores that do online orders that might sell said book to give them shout-outs in his social media to help boost sales, but also to help out the local store.
The only link in this post is a link to a thread on these forums - it's just down below, in fact, called, "Indie Bookstore Recommendations?" (still same place linked before) here in Off-Topic Discussions.
EDIT: Hah! As soon as I use the term "top of page" I knew - knew! - I'd be ninja'd somehow. Also I misspelled "pertinent," so I fixed that, now. Also it will never stop being weird to me that we put commas in the quotation marks, even though they're not part of what we're quoting. Ah, well.

Duh.
I hate wasting food but the even-lower-than-usual rate at which I am getting groceries now threw me off the loop. I just discovered that the piece of pork shoulder meat that was waiting its turn in fridge (and got skipped a few times when I had more short-term products, and delayed a few more times when I didn't bother with making a full dinner) is terribly overdue. When I opened the packaging it was definitely smelly and slimy. I could have try to make something out of it, but decide not to risk food poisoning.
Meh. Over two pounds of meat (and approximately an hour of minimum wage work) went to trash :(
Hate that.

You'd be surprised what you can make edible if you're willing to eat grossly-overcooked meat.
My mother was an immunologist, so I got 1/4" pork chops cooked at 425˚F for 20 minutes to the consistency of shoe leather.
For pork shoulder, you can wash it off (the slime'll taste bad), bake it at 350˚ for 2-3 hours until the internal temperature breaks 200˚F (i.e., becomes inedible to most humans), then slow-cook it in beer or wine for a night to soften it back up.
Or go the Indian route, turn it into a curry, and then boil it (212˚F) for 3-4 hours to get the internal temperature up high enough.
It's not great, but it works...
...as long as the meat wasn't in an airtight container. Once there's no air, botulism gets involved, and you don't even remotely play with that.

Already threw it in trash, not taking it out of it. And it was in sealed foil that might or might not have been airtight.

How To Be A Decent Person 101:
...For the Spring Semester, Albany High School will be grading students as Pass/No Pass (P/NP)...
...The UC and CSU systems notified schools and the public at the beginning of April that they will accept Pass/No Pass grading to no disadvantage to students. Private universities such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Stanford have all said that there will be no disadvantage to students whose schools have adopted this policy. Many other school districts throughout California and the nation are also making this change...

JOHN/TL;DR - reading the whole of it indicates that "masks" are not "masks you buy;" it seems that basically "cover your face," is the important part. Also, if people can't get a mask, "alternate arrangements" must be made for critical supplies; if medical reasons would prevent you from wearing a mask (including under two years of age, or breathing problems), you are exempted from being prevented from entering a place of business.
John Napier 698 wrote:NobodysHome wrote:They said "masks" on the radio.John Napier 698 wrote:Hello, everyone.
Well, the s$@# really hit the fan here.
** spoiler omitted **I don't think that counts as political, though I could be wrong.
But did they really specify "a mask"?
Because California's 'mandate' is to "wear a face covering, but not a mask, because we want to save all the masks for health care professionals".
So we all wander around with bandanas over our faces and look like Wild West bandits.
So, this is big enough that I thought I'd look into it for you.
I apologize for the ludicrous size of the post below - I'm rambly, and if you're reading it, you're all following along with me (it's a semi-edited stream-of-consciousness).

Sorry, Tac but I can only go by what I heard on the radio.
Right! That makes sense when you have limited data to research stuff! And that’s why I posted that nonsense monstrosity: I wanted to show I was as thorough as possible.
When the government says “it has to be masks” that made me curious what they meant by “masks” - and the government body that passed the law specifies that “two rubber bands and a bandana” count as a “mask” for their legal purposes, and they specify - in law! - that there are exceptions (and even if you don’t fall under those exceptions that let you in, if you can’t find/wear a mask the stores have to make arrangements for you to get necessary goods).
I quoted what I did the way I did to point out the sources I was using were the government website. What you heard on the radio is accurate to the point that you are now mandated to wear masks, but it either didn’t hear or find the legal sections specifying exceptions. (That’s no real shame: the only place I found easy to read was a report that didn’t mention the exceptions - the first article - and the primary government website that was supposedly in charge wasn’t very helpful or clear.
None of that answered, “what is a mask?”
Instead I had to head to the lawmaker’s site (instead of the health department) and the lawmaker’s news outlet to find the actual law itself and read the actual substance of the law (which provides exceptions I noted), and another different statement by that governing body on what constitutes a “mask.”
Anyway, I know you needed something official so I went to the most official and clear sources I could. Unfortunately it’s not all neatly laid out in a single place and the health department most things send you to give no guidance other than the most basic (and statistics that aren’t helpful to most people). So you didn’t have to burn data, I put it together for you! Hope it helps!
Remember: the law says you have to wear a mask; the lawmaker says that a mask is effectively any tight covering of cloth, e.g. a bandana and two rubber bands, as well as other made-at-home options; if you still cannot use a mask for any legitimate reason, the law states a store with medicine and groceries must provide an alternate way of acquiring these necessary elements (and that would include things like a bandana and rubber bands, if they have them in stock).
That is the legally important thing to take from this!
(I know literally nothing about anyone in the government up there - and am not commenting on any party lines or anything else; I am merely citing the lawmakers and individuals involved by their own written and public words that I can find.)
Want you and everyone up there as safe as possible!

In our case it didn't result in car damage, but twice, now I've had two horrifyingly close shaves with someone coming from seemingly nowhere at excessively high speeds - enough to not just shift the carriage a little (which any care with enough kinetic energy can do) but rattle the car I was in while I was driving and without touching us.

As ever, if you are allergic to any ingredients, do not use said lubricant(which is why water based lubricants remain the rule of thumb despite their habit of evaporation).

Yeah, the Planescape books make a few references to being able to tell a seasoned planar from a newbie primer by whether or not they pronounce the city as Sigil or Sijil.
