Finished Falcon/Winter Soldier this evening. It's hands-down my favorite of the three MCU TV series.

I am in episode two so far, and I both love the series, and am extremely frustrated with the people in it.

Big Spoiler:

As of episode 2, Falcon and Bucky have done exactly nothing but be actively rude to a guy who is honestly trying.

And I know enough about U.S. Agent to know this isn't going to go well, and that he's probably not a good guy: the problem is that I know that, but they have been nothing but rude to a guy who they absolutely don't know and who has treated them about as well as anyone can in the circumstance (and also socially penalize him for missteps when they're genuine missteps that occur because he's reaching out due to that same rudeness). And, yeah, they've done so because they feel he's being rude to another man... who he's made clear he's not trying to be rude to.

S/B: "I don't like you because you're not Steve Rogers and I don't know you."
W: "I'm not trying to be Steve Rogers."
S/B: "Good."
W: "Right. So can we work together?"
S/B: "You jerk."

It's an extremely clique-ish response that undermines their ability to hold a moral high ground, and also undermines any moral high ground they might be taking later.

"I don't like this guy because I don't like this guy." doesn't actually validate your feelings if he turns out bad, later - that's just happenstance.

Now, to be fair, that's common in fandoms, and it's an extremely human response. "They changed it, now it sucks." is a kneejerk reaction that I've had many times myself - and sometimes it turns out to be true! I'm just frustrated that they're effectively hamstringing themselves by actively opposing the guy.

EDIT: As a perfect example of this, I really didn't like making Nick Cage into Samuel Jackson, because that's not the Nick Cage I'd grown up with. I am so daggum happy to report that I was wrong about disliking this change. Jackson's take is easily the best version of the character. So I get it, on that note; and, also, it should be clear that there is absolutely no emotional comparison to, "I like these comics." and "This man was a brother to me." - so it's even more understandable for them. It's just that I want there to be a better reason than, "Ew, no." for later.

And, again, I strongly suspect that Walker is going to turn out to be just, the worst, but at the same time that later badness doesn't justify their current hostility.

Also, I loved the exchange, "You ever jump on a grenade?" "Yeah, four of 'em, actually - it's a thing I do, with a reinforced helmet-" That's actually really good.

That said holy crap Isaiah! What! I do not know where they're going with his story, and I really want to.

And I love the dynamic with Sam and Bucky. They're great.
I'm unsure if the show is valid in making Sam feel guilty for not taking up the mantle or not. I know that I, personally, wanted him to be Cap, but as a person, his decision is reasonable - it's a heavy burden, and I don't know if he should really be shamed into taking it as the show title and the show itself feels like it's doing.

I've also heard Sharon Carter's here, and we haven't seen her since, what, CA:atWS? So that's interesting that she's such a cap-centric figure. I wonder when she's coming in. I know she was mentioned, briefly, by Sam, but I thought based on what little I'd heard she was going to be bigger than that.

EDIT: Also, I like Sam's backup guy. He's pretty great, and I hope he doesn't do a bad.

EDIT: Clothes on!

I think that's a fair criticism, TL. I recall similar feelings but I'd have to rewatch to be sure.

Of course, it also means they're humans with flaws as well.

Absolutely!

Flawed but still good protagonists is something that Marvel tends to do quite well. My only real problem is that it's feeling like the show is trying to give the leads the moral high ground in a particular situation while not allowing them to have that moral high ground.

EDIT: In particular, it's weird because it feels like we're just supposed to trust Sam's intuition and read on the situation*, despite the fact that evidence seems to point to the contrary. I want him to be more validated in the story, but it doesn't seem to allow him that, and instead demands he makes these intellectual/moral guesses and is just correct. Like, give him hints, clues, tells, something from his perspective that let's us, the audience, follow why he could possibly "intuit" something that happens to be correct, later.

*:
Same thing with the nascent/apparent bad guys who seem to have valid reasons. Sam's, "Well maybe they have good reason." seems to be correct, but he has no justifiable place to have that intuition.

And I think there's definitely a fair discussion to be had between Duty and Freedom for Sam's choices - it's just a bit of dissonance that this is the track they're choosing to go with, which, when paired with a few of the comments and character choices is a little... off-putting.

But! I still love both Sam and Bucky. Their chemistry is solid, and the therapist is great, and there are many good feelings as well as those frustrations mentioned.

There's also a good explanation later in the series, from Bucky.

I'm looking forward to it.

I love WandaVision more than I thought I would (though a couple parts of the ending felt a tad odd), so I'm more than willing to bypass any apparent inconsistencies. I grip 'cause faaaaaaaaaaaaaaanerdrage. It's what I do sometimes.

As I said in another thread, the series did my boys US Agent and Battlestar REAL DIRTY.

My god, take a read of the current US Agent Mini series. Battlestar fighting the Saint stole the entire freaking mini series from US Agent. I also loved US Agent in Sam Wilson Captain America. Do I like the guy? No. We are quite far apart politically, and I don't care for his violent approach to problem solving. But I do not doubt he has America's best interest at heart even so.

I will agree with that.

Spoilers for the rest of the series:
The biggest let down was the antagonists. The Flag Smashers didn't live up to potential and Walker wavered between being a villian and being his comic counterpart. I hated losing Battlestar just to take Walker off the leash, only to not have him go anywhere.

Hey, it's

Spoiler!:

Sharon!

Gotta love that back-and-forth:

SF: "I can help you-"
SC: "You bargaining over my life?"
SF: "No. Look, fine, I'll do it for free."
SC: "I don't trust charity."
SF: "So... I bargain over your life..."
SC: "... fine."

XD

Good stuff!

I actually really like Battlestar, so far.

Even while Wilson shows cracks, Battlestar has been pretty good.

(Still just on episode three, though, so avoiding that TOZ spoiler fir now.)

More chat, less spoiler, but still:

Also, I know - am absolutely certain - that it won't, but I kind of want Sam and Buck to get the serum. Just... I just want that. Is it necessary? No. And so it won't happen. But still!

Super powers are cool, okay??

In a rather bizarre turn of events, I have a potential job for anyone who:

1) Lives in an urban or metropolitan settlement in the USA
2) Cooks/eats pies, or is open to the idea of doing so.

I am not making this up, odd though it is.

The details:

* Pays $100
* Involves making a diary of what you've had for dinner over three days (25th-27th)
* And taking part in an hour and three quarter online focus group shortly afterwards

If that's of interest to you Pie Fiends, or if you want more info, drop us a PM.

Today was a surreal work experience.

In conversation with section manager, mentioned the suppressed urge to commit violence upon store manager Wednesday due to unquestionably shady crap store manager was pulling. The shocked look on section manager's face only intensified when the kindly old Muslim grandmother who I have to credit with my health right now, she got me off an OTC addiction almost a decade ago looked at us both and said "I, too, was considering this thing."

Section manager tried to keep professional Manager-face, but could see in his eyes that he definitely felt our frustration.

Even in the spoiler there is no further mention of pies.

Which is good, because you don't want me involved in any way, shape, or form in pie-making.

As for dinners:
October 25: It's fish night, so almost guaranteed teriyaki salmon with asparagus and mushrooms over rice. Pretty much the kids' Monday night staple.

October 26: It's game night, so we'll be doing takeout. Most likely either Troy Greek Cuisine or Al's Big Burger because they're coming up in the rotation.

October 27: Heck if I know. But it won't be pie. :-P

I make pies but I don't do diaries or focus groups. At least not for anything less than a grand.

So.

What does anyone think about the new Mario movie?

Casting or anything else.

The One Comment I Will Make:

Richardson and Black need to swap roles.

Richardson absolutely kills the deep growling voice like Bowser, and you can't convince me that Black doesn't make Magikoopa noises in the mirror at home for fun.

My favorite bits from TFatWS:
* Seeing the Dora Milaje hand Walker a gorgeous a**-whuppin'. I backed up and watched it again. Twice.
* The Isaiah Bradley bit at the end. Knew it was coming (they telegraphed it pretty loudly), cried anyway.
* Sam being Sam.

...GothBard now has 6 years with a major video game studio, has been promoted to senior designer, and is managing her own team.

A headhunter just contacted her wanting her to work on "Noovies" -- the video games movie theaters offer to let you play on your phone while you're waiting for the movie to start.

So... I guess they're just aiming high?

I liked Lara Croft Guy's take: "Hey, maybe if they actually GOT a real game designer those games would be fun!"

Aim high, little Noovie company. Aim high.

Well, second attempt to play the Kingmaker AP has failed. The GM's dad is showing signs of dementia or Alzheimer's, so he has to stop gaming to try and figure things out with that. So looks like my Carrion Crown campaign, which was intended to be played on weeks he couldn't make it (usually due to work), will become the main. Luckily, everyone is enjoying the game so far.

I went with female as all the reviewers went with male.

I started playing and I realized I needed a new controller so off I went to Target.

I meant partially shaven heads, like here (part of early FC 6 cinematic) , not Patrick Steward's fully shaven head.

Aaaaaand... we add "The Big Chill" to movies NobodysHome doesn't get.

Spoilered for length, not spoilers:
The Big Chill is nothing but a "slice of life" movie about a group of friends getting together in their mid-30s to have a weekend funeral/gathering because one of their own committed suicide.

And yep. That's it.

The characters are interesting, and, having lived through the scenario myself (except in my mid-20s rather than my mid-30s), it's very real to life. And the performances are excellent.

But... why?

Why would I be interested in watching this?

Maybe I'm just wired differently. I don't slow down to look at collisions on the side of the road. I don't eavesdrop on strangers' conversations trying to hear something juicy. I'm just not that interested in other people's lives.

So watching other people live their lives for two hours was utterly boring.

Nothing was particularly surprising. Nothing was particularly moving. It was simply... life.

But both Shiro and Hi think it's an amazing movie. Hi was sitting there quoting it line-by-line for entire segments. I guess it just resonates with some people, and it didn't with me.

Overall, very much like "The Big Lebowski", I recognized a lot of the lines that have become endemic to our culture, but I didn't see a particular point in the original movie itself.

It's kind of sad when a company tries to do something nice for you, but they don't know you so they do something stupid.

I've been leery of AirBnB ever since it came along ("Gee, an unregulated rental market. What could possibly go wrong?"), and the stories of hidden cameras, house parties with homicides, wrong addresses, and the like have convinced me that I never need to use AirBnB for any reason.

So of course GothBard's company sent us a $50 AirBnB gift card as an appreciation gift.

I can probably sell it to one of my neighbors, and it's the thought that counts, but it's a lot like giving me a gift card to the Facebook game store (if there is such a thing): It's politically charged right now, so maybe you should just be giving out generic gift cards instead of service-specific ones. They cost the same, and they're more likely to be used.

I really like Far Cry 6 so far, there's not the constant barrage of batshit action you get in Far Cry 5 but there is still a phenomenal amount of carnage.

And yes, there is an early ending though not as early as 5 (the only other Far Cry game I've played).

I'm not sure how realistic having an improvised rocket launcher strapped to your back is but I appreciate the gesture.

And I absolutely love how they show you "healing" from wounds. Basically a combination of setting your wrist yourself, burning your wounds with a cigar and popping an entirely unhealthy amount of pills.
