One of the other really interesting statements the guy said about Texas was the absolute lack of "open" land.
In California, no matter where I am in the state, I can drive for under an hour to a state park with well-maintained trails where I can hike or bike all day. Heck; even here in the heart of the urban Bay Area it's a 10-minute drive to Tilden park, where I can then walk a 15-mile loop through Wildcat canyon. Or I could go to the Marin headlands. Or Mount Tamalpais. Or Mount Diablo. Or the Fremont hills. Or...
The author claimed that virtually all land in Texas is privately-owned, so even though there are vast swaths of open land, they're all fenced off with barbed wire and "No Trespassing" signs, so if you actually want to go out on a hike through the wilderness you're restricted to a tiny handful of public parks, all of which are jam-packed for exactly that reason.
So, having never been outside of the Dallas or Houston areas (and having never tried to hike in Texas), I don't know how true that is. But according to the author, the impression of Texas being full of "wide open spaces" is only true if you don't actually try to walk that land.
EDIT: And not only do I walk alone, but I walk nekkid...

Yeah, that's true. Which is why all the environmental campaigns here focus on personal responsibility, good stewardship, and why environmentally-conscious land management is in the owner's best interests.

Learned a cool bit of trivia this morning: Every day on our walk GothBard and I walk by Thousand Oaks Elementary School on Colusa Avenue in Berkeley. We used to take the kids there to play in the park.
Turns out it's where Kamala Harris went to elementary school.
Small world!
My mom says they were both born in the same hospital in Oakland.

We just finished watching Bruce Campbell host a "live" viewing of Evil Dead. (Streamed, so not quite "live".)
Absolutely delightful, except the event was advertised as 6-8 pm, and the streaming service (Stellar) cut Bruce off mid-sentence at 7:48 pm.
Hey, Stellar! If we paid $50 for two hours of entertainment, and the host is still fricking talking, cutting him off twelve minutes early is NOT going to lead to greater customer satisfaction.
That's going to get them some hate mail.
EDIT: And for the record, it was far less, "Watching a movie with Bruce" than it was, "Listening to Grandpappy Bruce talk about how painful it was to make movies back in the 70s while a movie just happened to play in the background."
It was awesome.
(And yes, LM, if they do Evil Dead 2 we'll let you know 'cause I know Shiro will accidentally buy you a ticket if you want it.)

NH, watching tv: Oh boy! Bruce Campbell! I sure do love watching him on tv!
Bruce Campbell at 3 minutes left in the show: So, to all you fans out there, i have only one thing to say- Klatuu, Verada,- cable cuts out
NH: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT HE WAS GOING TO SAY!
More like, "And in this scene, I had a bunion, so I was in a lot of pain, and our cameraman had quit so the homeless guy who used to sleep outside of our college dorm was filming for us, and just as I stepped on a rake...
oh! Another question... let's see...***cuts off***
EDIT: Seriously. It was like he looked at the clock, saw he had nearly 15 minutes left, and was starting in on some new topics to fill the rest of the time so we'd feel we'd gotten our money's worth, and the hosting company just said, "Well, movie's over. Time to cut off!"

Sigh. So much of parenting is mentally calculating how much longer you have to wait before you can reasonably give yourself permission to introduce your kids to the really cool s~@@.
Like Teensy Valeros and "Army of Darkness".
Meh. We went with, "If the kids are old enough to be interested in it, they're old enough to watch it with us."
Seems to have turned out OK... but I'm betting the "with us" was a HUGE part of that so we could answer questions, discuss propriety, and whatnot.

I'm working on prepping another one-shot. I have the next one done, and the one after that about 95%, it's basically done but I might tweak it a bit. So, for the one after that, I'm hoping to get some laughs with my favorite vanity end card by Chuck Lorre.
“Mornings are the worst. The mind seems undefended, easy prey for both memories and imagination. What happened. What should've happened. What might happen someday. Your fault, my fault, no one's fault. The only way to relieve the torment is to get up, empty the bladder, drink the coffee, read the scrolls, perform the animal sacrifice, paint the chicken blood on the groin and call upon the demonic spirits to bring you back.
Nights are bad too. Once again, exhaustion makes the mind vulnerable to obsessing over woulda, shoulda, coulda. The only thing to do is sit alone and eat the chicken which was senselessly murdered in the morning.”

I just ran a trap in my last game that went really well. The map was a chess board. If they step on the wrong square they get teleported into a vat of energy damage (random and all sorts) 1 round the first time 2 rounds the second etc. Noone was gonna make it past 3. The rules that they didn't know was that when they step on a square they have to move like that squares chess piece. and they couldn't use the same piece as anyone else. 1st person did a diagonal jump to the end like a checker piece but he stepped on bishop first and was completely fine the next person tried to copy him and nearly died. next person stepped on queen and did what she wanted. after that it got pretty rough till one of my players figured out the rule. 2 people almost died from it but it was a lot of fun.

I'm thinking of how to nerf the trap that is in the module so that they can survive it. The module was written for 9th level and up, but they will be 5th level. It's a 100' long hallway, every round you are in contact with the walls, floor, or ceiling, you take 1d6 CON damage (FORT DC 20 to halve), and then again 1 minute later. No amount of clothing or whatever between you and the surfaces will negate it. The only solution is to not touch anything, or run really fast. Since they will be lower level, I'm thinking of having it either just do HP damage or 1 CON damage, lower the save DC, and forget the lingering effect.

Hey, CY. These guys built an R/C drone to spread ice melt. Maybe you should get in on that racket.

There is a lot they're doing wrong right from the beginning so I can't really take them seriously.
Edit: I watched more of it, it's wildly impractical for commercial use, I can get three places salted in the amount of time it takes them just to put the salt in, plus there's no way you can put enough salt in one for one property.
So no, as much as I hate handling salt I don't think I'll get in on this.
I will say, I agree with the guy in the comment section that it would be perfect for spreading grass seed and fertilizer.

I know it's impractical. Hell, the guys in the video said it was dumb. Just a bit of fun. Besides, they design and build R/C planes and drones for a living, so it was a way to show off some of that.
I don't read the comments.

Personally, I think an R/C truck would be more useful. Still not the most efficient way, but if you're just doing it for yourself and your own sidewalk/driveway, it could be a bit of fun.
Now you're on to something! They even have R/C motors capable of hauling heavy loads.

Me: "Baby, if I can hear lyrics from another room, it's too loud."
Val: "MOM! That's Joan Jett! It's NEVER too loud!"
You can never let them know that you know they're right.
Additionally..."Joan Jett", while admirable, is NOT the musical artist I was expecting to come out of Val's mouth.

His tastes vary pretty widely. His current top 5 are The Petersons, Joan Jett, Joe Satriani, Weird Al, and Enej.

You have to appreciate their enthusiasm, but there is a line over which one descends into fanaticism.
I mean, they have completely left the joke out of it! If they keep it up, they could end up like mites!

I lived through another snow run.
I've been going by myself the last few times as there seems to be a labor shortage and I'm actually faster by myself then with another person weighing me down.
And honestly with the pandemic still raging I'd rather go by myself.
When will you be crowned snow king?

That might attract undue attention from Freehold...

So, Today I Learned:
- animal control services in my area doesn't cover non-domesticated creatures ("call wildlife and preservation")
- wildlife and preservation services doesn't cover basic pests ("call animal control")
Now I have a living rat in cage trap (but fortunately no longer chewing through my walls) and literally no one willing or equipped to do anything with or about it.
Their suggestions:
- "walk it to the tree line and let it go" (great: but there is no treeline for miles where there aren't also neighbor houses)
- "if you own a firearm, you can euthanize it humanely; caveat - make sure you aren't violating local ordinances first" (great: but I do not own a firearm and 'shooting it in the head' requires an amount of precision I don't think I have, and will likely make it no longer have a head, so... mission accomplished, I suppose? ... but I don't have a firearm, and "stabbing or slicing it to death with sword" does not sound humane)
- "I'm really sorry, but maybe Google it?" (great: official advice is to "Google it" - complaining on Discord counts, though, right?)
In any event. It’s now in as much wilderness as I can reasonably manage.
Unfortunately, I learned a neighbor’s cat recently caught a bigger one. So that’s always exciting.
