.....It either involves money or physics and the computer is perfectly capable of doing it for you which never seems to stop them from insisting you learn it.
Edit: This is my stock answer because every time we ask our math teacher for real life applications for some crazy type of problem that's the answer we get. :)

But, seriously, what? You mean like 1/3 = 0.3333? We use stuff like that sometimes in engineering, which can occasionally be confused with real life.
Ok, haha, but why will I need to know how to convert .333333333333333.. into 1/3?
Oh, that's the easy way. Hit [math], 1, and enter. Calculator does it for you. :)
(at least if you're using a TI-84....smaller calculators aren't so obliging)
Edit again: 1/3 is exact and .3333333.... is an approximation. So a lot of times you need to convert to a fraction to make calculation more exact.

I believe we should switch from a base 10 system to a base 12 system.
This would create many improvement in our daily lives!!!
What numbers are easiest to do arithmatic with in your head?
2, 5, 10.
You know why?
Because we use a base 10 system, and only factors of 10 are 2 and 5.
If we switched to a base 12 system, arithmatic would become simpler, with oft repeated simple mathematical patterns, simply because there are so many more prime factors of 12. The factors of 12 are 2, 3, 4 and 6! There'd only be two additional digits to remember.
Let's say that 10 is α and 11 is ß. The digits, in order would be:

50 minutes to the hour! 10 months in the year! 260 degrees in a circle! Those Babylonians knew what they were doing!
While it would make good sense from a computational point of view, hexadecimal is not more human friendly. Its only prime factor is 2. It doesn't enable good pattern recognition, something humans excel at, to aid in our computational abilities, and it's an additional 6 digits to remember instead of simply an additional 2.
computers are our slaves, they should conform to whatever is easiest for us! :D
