Marvel Movie Timeline #16: Black Widow:
We saw Black Widow in theaters just last year, so it seemed kind of wasteful to burn the time to watch a mediocre movie a second time, but I'm dutiful and diligent and trying to get through these things in order, so there it is.
And yes, it's a solid mediocre, "meh" movie that passes the time, but I don't think I'll ever watch it again.
Most of the movie is so-so: There's a somewhat-reasonable plot, marred only by Natasha surviving ludicrously-impossible car crashes that would kill any normal human, but overall acceptable. Unfortunately, then comes the last half hour or so of the 'climactic' scene at the Red Room. It is so beyond stupid that even the Pitch Meeting doesn't do it justice. Hint: If you're a screenwriter and you have a character say, "It's just basic science," don't have them say it about something that everyone in the theater knows is complete nonsense. Virtually every scene involving the Red Room was painful. Agonizingly painful. Brain-cell-dying painful.
I think the laziness in the screenwriting was best exemplified by the final scene: Natasha turns herself over to the authorities. Cut scene. "Two weeks later" appears. She's free.
What? What just happened? Is jail optional now? Did she just leave?
No explanation. Nothing. Just, "I'm turning myself in," "Now I'm free."
And that's the amount of writing effort that went into the last 30 minutes of the movie.
EDIT: I'm sure there's some comment about me watching Black Widow in the nude, but I'm not going there.

Well, over the last five hours we got through about 3 inches of freezing rain which about an hour ago turned into heavy snowfall, so far we're at about 1.5 inch of standing snow on top of the permafrost soil being completely saturated/flooded from the rain/sleet.
The view from my office window is lovely but I am certainly glad that I don't have to go anywhere as we're supposed to have all this keep up for about another 12 or so hours with an expected total snowfall between 4-6 inches with the temp rapidly dropping single-digit (fahrenheit) temps. Here is to hoping no power outages hit tonight.

I saw a story today about a very Special Boy (this was on l'intèrnette, so may not be real, but there were pictures, and it seemed true to type)
This Special Boy wished to make himself impervious to gunfire, so had the brilliant idea of "microdosing with bullets"
First, he shot himself in the leg repeatedly with .177 pellets.
When he'd convinced himself that those no longer broke the skin, he moved onto .22 pellets.
When he was used to that, he shot himself with a gun firing a .22LR round.
It was apparently extremely painful, and he had to seek emergency medical attention, to everybody's great surprise. This puzzled him, and he was seeking advice as to where his quest to become bulletproof went wrong.

It's cold and bleak here. No snow or rain or anything. Just cold and bleak.

So, it's now fairly public knowledge that my manager of 18 years is fed up with the %&$$*%@ she's had to put up with over the last few years and has resigned. Which is a good sign that I should at least look into the possibility of exiting.
So I went to LinkedIn and checked for jobs in my field.
Apparently a Senior Principal contributor with 20+ years of experience in the field and a Ph.D. is like Godzilla in the kiddie pool.
It'll be interesting to see how many companies bite and how many say, "Too rich for our blood."

Have not seen it, to be honest Endgame pretty much killed my enthusiasm for MCU movies, I've seen the Spider-Man movies because I'm a big fan of what they've been doing with the new Spider-Man movies but otherwise I'm fairly meh on everything.
The next Doctor Strange movie looks like fun, but there again it's because I like Doctor Strange and not because I want to stay connected to the MCU.

I find I enjoy the streaming/miniseries approach far better than the movies. WandaVision, Loki, and F&WS were all amazing and I loved their better opportunity for pacing and expansion. I haven't gotten around to watching What If? yet, but it's on my to-do list.
The only real reason I want to see the next Dr. Strange movie is because it's basically a sequel to WandaVision. And I'm still not going anywhere until it's on streaming, I'm relishing the opportunity to never visit a theater again.

Same here. Topeka apparently got hit hard but here it was just a little frost in the morning and a day of being cold and overcast. Not a drop of snow.

Wandavision is pretty good so far, I hate time travel crap except for a few rare examples so as soon as they introduced time police into Loki I turned it off. Falcon and the Winter Soldier looks like the same old same old so no interest there.
But I'm kind of weird.

I completed the Danny Trejo mission in Far Cry 6, apparently there's another one in the special ops (online multiplayer).
It was a lot of fun, plus he keeps a lot of extra ammo lying around so that made the "rampage while Danny Trejo makes tacos for homeless people" mission a lot more fun.
Also, the ghost panther amigo is my spirit guide.

And sorry. Another windows-open day for me.
I had to keep windows closed today. Not because of the temperature, which went into fine, once the wind dried the freezing wetness out of the air, but because of the raging winds. If I kept them open, the draft between the rooms (which are on different walls of the building) would keep slamming the windows, and I can't really afford paying for new windows at the moment (the current ones barely hold together, probably being older than me).

It's funny; we loved the first few episodes of WandaVision. But then when it developed an actual plot it was all downhill for us. And we never got past the first episode of Loki, but we know lots of people who love it.
As for never going to a theater again? Other than the cerrito (dinner brought to your seats as you watch the movies), count me in!

I'm definitely one of those people. WV and Loki were the best things I watched all year. F&WS was a distant third, comparatively, but entertaining enough.

What I like about Far Cry 5.
Leveling up, it actually feels like something.
Guns for hire, I love that I can go around recruiting basically every a%!~+#$ with a firearm or bow to join me as long as I pay them enough.
Looting enemies, looting is just fun!
What I don't like.
The constant clusterf$!$ of enemies clogging up every road and intersection. I'm sorry, but I've been to Montana, a few times, and there is no way there is that many people in the entire state, much less a backwoods county straddling the mountains.
The weapon wheel. My god do I hate how they manage your inventory!

About the same. I will continue to die on the hill that Infinity War/Endgame were not great. One of my D&D kiddos asked me why I didn't like them, and he's very upset with me because he couldn't refute any of my complaints, and I might have converted him.

Honestly, I hope the streaming success pushes the MCU more toward miniseries than movies for the simple luxury of pacing. A movie gives you about 90-120 minutes, some pushing closer to 150. A miniseries? 6 1 hour episodes gives you over twice that. You don't have to rush. You can plant more seeds for other projects. You can spotlight characters who'd only get 30 seconds in a movie.
I can't imagine how bad a Good Omens movie would've been, trying to trim down to a 90 minute runtime. More miniseries for everyone (except you, JKR, take your Fantastic Beasts nonsense and tweet ragefaces into the void).

So, my weekend is going to be "interesting":
In classic Shiro fashion, after he couldn't get a hotel room for last year's DunDraCon, he booked one immediately after the con. This year he completely forgot that he'd done so and booked a room. Now with two rooms for the weekend, instead of returning one he invited us to come down and spend the evening at the con.
Unfortunately, I don't find conventions all that interesting; I can walk the floor and see everything I want to see in 2-3 hours. So there's no reason for me to be there for two days. GothBard compromised with me: We'll go down after dinner tonight, hang out in the hotel room gaming and whatnot, then do the con tomorrow morning. If the kids are interested they'll drive down and meet us there, and it's always fun to walk around cons with the kids because they're interested in much different things than we are. Then we'll all head home.
On Sunday we're supposed to have the 5e game, but a week ago the GM sent out, "Are we going to game on Sunday?" and not a single person responded, and my attempts to get anyone to even express a preference have all failed. So I suspect I'll be updating my LinkedIn profile and otherwise doing work-related paperwork.
Which frees up Monday to help Impus Major catch up on all his homework.
Whee?
EDIT: And today I'm doing my taxes. Some people choose cleric as a class. I think I chose "clerical".

Y'know, the whole social construct of, "I refuse to say what I mean for fear it might inconvenience you," can go die in a burning hole.
Yesterday afternoon <nearby older relative> contacted us that her dryer had broken and could she come over and run two loads of laundry in our dryer? Her initial contact was very clear: "I'll bring a book and be quiet as a mouse; you don't even have to notice that I'm there."
She came over and we socialized with her as much as we could, but I was cooking dinner and we had a 6:30 pm online game with Shiro and Lara Croft Guy. As I prepared dinner, she said, "Please don't feel like you need to feed me."
So yeah.
As everyone else was serving themselves, it was obvious she was becoming upset about not being offered dinner. So I offered her dinner. Then we all had to go to our scheduled social activities, leaving her alone in the living room. When she left she was clearly near tears that we had so abandoned her.
And my feeling is that if in your initial contact you say, "Go ahead and ignore me," then I'm going to go ahead and ignore you. Don't say things you don't mean.
Fortunately, I don't see much of it at all in my kids' generation, but that might just be growing up in the Bay Area and all the focus on being yourself and letting everyone know who you are.
EDIT: And yes, I am the sort of person who, if my Stereotypical <Ethnic> Grandmother said, "It's OK, dear, I'll just sit here alone in the dark," would leave her to sit alone in the dark. I don't subscribe to social games.

On the other hand, there are the little "polite deceptions" that are well-meaning and charming.
Our kids' dentist office has a strict "pay up front" policy: If I walk in the office door, I pay full price for the visit, they file the insurance claim for me, and the insurance company sends me a check. They've done this for many years, and they make it clear that for me there are "no exceptions".
But since COVID came along I've only accompanied one of the kids once, and otherwise I send the kids in alone.
When I went in during the COVID era, it was "policy as usual".
But for the kids, even if they offer to pay the receptionist tells them, "No, don't worry; we'll just bill your dad."
Which is an incredibly polite way of saying, "You're a kid and your card may not be able to handle the balance, so we're going to avoid giving you any bounced check charges and us any headaches by making an exception and sending a bill."
A very polite way of saying, "We don't think you can afford this."
I approve.

I just got hit with a flurry of phone calls. My dad just got diagnosed with bone cancer. We won't find out until he sees the oncologist next week how bad it is.
He was in crippling pain for the last few months due to high calcium levels, and now that they have his calcium down he is feeling much better at least. Small mercies and all that.

I think I did, because my impression was that it would be a huge hassle. Instead, I ended up getting the check from the insurance company before I got the bill from the dentist, and the dentist allowed for online payments by credit card so it was far less of a hassle than I expected.
And I think interacting with the kids' friends really opened my eyes. I always think of myself as "poor for Albany", since we're constantly running up debt and relying on refinancing to pay it off every few years, and the parents with whom we socialize definitely have higher-tier jobs than we do. (Lawyer, tech executive, etc.). Then Impus Minor started trying to plan a monthlong trip to Minnesota and I told him that $50/person/day was an absolute minimum, and probably far, far too low considering they were planning on renting a couple of cars and sleeping in hotel rooms.
And in spite of the fact that everyone involved lived with their parents, the only ones who could afford the $1400 price tag for the trip were my kids and Talky, who dropped out of college to get a 30-hour-a-week job. Every other kid couldn't afford it, and had parents who couldn't pay for it either.
So suddenly Albany/Berkeley kids not able to afford a $200 dentist visit became much more real to me.
Think of a month's rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in your city. Take 10% of that. Ask yourself, "Would you expect an 18-year-old to be able to pay that much as an expected expense?"
That's where I was.
=====
And for those wondering how my kids can possibly afford $1400 with no jobs, I'm kind of amazed as well. My rule was $1 per year old per week. So I set up bank accounts when they were born, and put in $1/week for their first year, $2/week for the second year, and so forth. And of course once they got old enough to spend money and saw the few hundred dollars in their bank accounts they spent it all. Which is a fantastic lesson for young kids to learn. "Wow! I have $585! I'm buying every Nerf gun out there!"
"Wait... it's been 3 months and I have how much?"
"About $84."
"I'm never spending money again!"
So in spite of the fact that Impus Minor gets only $17/week, he's managed to save up enough for a $1000 OneWheel and a $400 3D printer over the years. He plans. He saves. He bides his time. And he strikes. I figure I taught him well.

Eh, and so much for Impus Major becoming The Villain and Impus Minor growing to be The Hero...
Though, at least when Impus Minor grows to be a brooding but calculating Dr. Evil Jr* preparing to take over the world, he will have to face off with the charismatic and perky President of The World Impus Major.

We also very much hope that Cousin Ships is not out on the open sea anywhere vulnerable...

I'm fairly sure LM texted this to GothBard, but it is so fundamentally her nature that she changed her work avatar to the one in the comic:
(And yes, the goblins would be played by the Impii.)
Which picture she cropped for the avatar? Second, third, fourth, or the one from the fifth frame?

IM: Yeah, that sounds better.
