And another crash happened... But it was different than all the previous ones - the screen went black for a few moments, and then the computer restarted itself immediately.

Drejk, open the computer up and give it a good cleaning. Dust can do all sorts of fun things to them.

Also, make sure that everything is seated properly.

Have you tried logging the Boarwood?

I have no idea how to open it - it's one of those where everything is put inside (rather thin) screen. There is still warranty - two more months of it, though I am worried if the problem will keep occuring if I get to service it. It happens quite erratically so it might not happen within the limited time-frame the technician gets to test it.

Drejk, I know what its like to have something decide to stop working right out of the box. I hope you are able to find a solution either here or elsewhere.

Fiddle with the doohickey! Fiddle with the doohickey!!

Another interesting tidbit: the black screen of doom always happens when I order it to restart.

I don't think masturbation is the solution to this problem.

You don't know unless you try.

Why does everyone assume I'm talking about my manly parts today.

People just can't stop logging the Boarwood today.

Drejk wrote:

The BIOS perhaps?

It could be a damaged capacitor. I lost a system board due to a bad electrolytic cap.

I've determined what I really like is building patios.

And cutting stuff with a gigantic saw.

And chicks.

In fact, forget the patio and saw.

Well, one of the reasons I am anxious as hell today, is that those symptoms are very similar to what happened to my first laptop 9 years ago—it started going dark out of nowehere (though in its case, it was during particularly strenous moments, when it heated enormously). And unlike in this case, the restarting usually required cooling down .

But the initial appearance was the same - the screen went black and nothing happened.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

And now the black screen hit during one of the restarts that happen during the installation of a new system.

I don't think it's a driver issue... Doesn't the installer run on a very basic one?

I have done a clear reinstall - with the aforementioned crash in the middle, installed chrome, after a few minutes I used the restart option and got the black screen during the process.

*sigh*

I'll be contacting the friend who sold me it and trying to get it to the warranty repairs.

Ok, I am shutting about it for now, until some progress (or significant lack thereoff) happens.

At this point I agree. Usual causes of this kind of behavior would be drivers (doesn't seem to be the case at this point), bad RAM sticks, overheating (usually will automatically shut the computer down though), CPU issues, or a bad main board. That list is not exhaustive.

check with what the other dragon said and make sure everything is seated properly.

I can't do anything about that myself, really. It is a thin computer-within-the-screen model, closed shut. Getting inside is a serious project of disassembling, and likely would void the warranty.

Ok, the friend just responded. He will come here in a few hours to take it for servicing.

A (sort of) new symptom appeared. While restarting it, instead of getting a black screen, it frozen showing "restarting now" message with immovable cursor and the wheel of dots caught mid-animation.

Sounds to me like you've got some goblins in your circuits.

I'm gonna bet its a bad ram stick.

Though if I do that, I'd have to ask Vany to put his money for each of his picks. No betting on all of them with the same money.

What are the odds on it being PEBKAC?

I'm pretty sure it isn't, just curious.

There is no undergrowth, primordial or otherwise.

We came to conclusion the computer got angry on my friend for being ditched so unceremonially and it was an act of vengenace.

BTW: The friend was here. I showed him some of the issues which he recorded with his phone so he could show them to guy at the shop. And lo! There were some new symptoms that didn't show before.

This time, restarting the system caused it to crash with some pixel artifacts on the screen followed by completely white screen.

I got the money back and he took the computer and will drop it at the shop chain handling the warranty on his way.

There is a recording of the computer crashing while using "Restart Now" button in Windows (though it is on my friend's phone so I can't procure it at will).

I can't really devise a way of messing that.

Now I wonder if Vany or Woran have stories of their wards proving that you can break computer by pushing the restart now button the wrong way...

At the very first moment the crash occured I thought it was a momentary power outage (such happened a few times in the past - but they were most obviously a non-issue for the laptop). It wasn't because modem wasn't reset (which is visible because of all of its front LEDs making a noticeable dance of flashing lights).

Come on! Merely faster CPU, 16 GB RAM, and 1920×1080 display are not meanigfully new technologies, not to warrant such reaction!

Spoiler:
The only really new tech in that computer comparing to what I have in the laptop was SSD system disc. And I think that flash memory storage in phone and tablet uses the same technnology as SSD, so it shouldn't count as new either.

On the other hand, there were two lovely horse chestnut trees in front of my house many-many years ago but were cut out around the turn of the millennium, so maybe ghosts of long dead dryads are indeed a factor that should be considered.

I am an NPC living in uninteresting part of the city with no centuries old buildings, no forgotten cellars, no Nazi bnunkers, and the nearest dragon cave is 5.29 mile away from here in straight line (at least google maps shows it to be 5.29, in real walking distance it would be a bit more, though).

There are Cold War era vaults underneath the district, including my very own neighborhood, but they are only interesting when you are 5-15 years old.

Well, it had an integrated gfx so it did tapped regular memory for most if not all of its VRAM needs (it showed something along the lines of 256 MB VRAM in one of the settings, not sure if it had its own 256 MB VRAM or if it was just regular RAM reserved for that function).

LOL. I still love reading stories about the sales guys who run up tens of thousands of dollars in "expenses" and try to bill the company. There was an infamous one a couple of years ago about a guy who came here from out of the country and racked up over $100,000 in expenses at a strip club (seriously?!?!?), then got upset when the company wouldn't reimburse him and fired him instead.
