Feeling better today. I think most of the fever is gone (I lost the thermometer a while ago so this just goes by feeling). The pressure on my head has lessened and my throat is less scratchy.

Of course, its easy to feel better when you're not doing anything. Will do the dishes in a bit as a test how my energy is going.

EDIT: need to be carefull while doing those dishes in the nude

Aaaand, as of today, Impus Major is officially a legal adult. GothBard is a bit verklempt about it, but I'm still working my a$$ off to keep him afloat in so many ways I figure we've still got a few years before he moves on to join the general populace.

For now, it's just registering him to vote, getting him a learner's permit, and (if necessary) registering him for the draft. It's been so off-and-on since I was a teen I have to look it up. (Registering for the draft during the Reagan years was terrifying because you never knew whether the man was going to start WW III. It was very shortly after that (when GothBard graduated?) that the draft was eliminated. But then I heard it's come back. Ah, well, Google will tell me. Google is my master.)

I think you have to register, but it's not much of a risk these days because voluntary enlistment is high enough to make the chances negligible. I am admittedly going off of a fragmented memory I wasn't paying full attention to at the time.

Me thinks you should get a new thermometer, Woran. Better play safe then sorry.

Yeah, looked it up. It's "all voluntary, but you have to register just in case" at the moment.

I keep thinking about it, but never at the right time. I always remember at home, or in the bus. Never when I'm actually near a store that sells them.

So what age is a legal adult in the USA?

Oh, it's the USA, so we can't possibly have a SINGLE age for everything.

But in general 18 years of age is the age of independence, where you can:

  • Live on your own
  • Vote
  • Go to war
  • Get a job*
  • Have intercourse outside of marriage*
  • Most states allow kids to drive at 16, but have restrictions until they turn 18. Similarly, insurance for 18-year-olds is MUCH cheaper than insurance for 16-year-olds.

Similarly, you're allowed to work if you're under 18, but there are all kinds of restrictions on exactly what kind of work you're allowed to do.

In a rather twisted approach to sex (as is normal in the good ol' Puritan USA), the age of consent for marriage varies state-by-state, is under 18 in quite a few states, and sex is legal as long as you're married. But if you're NOT married then you have to wait 'til you're 18.

Finally, you're not allowed to drink alcohol until you're 21, because being an adult doesn't mean you get to drink.

In other news, Weather Underground, my usually-oh-so-reliable weather source, seems to be going the way of, "We don't care any more" weather reporting.

If you look at the 10-day forecast, the highs for the next 10 days are supposed to be in the low 70s or high 60s, including a high of 75°F today.

Yet all the local news agencies are reporting a major heat wave in the area, and if you look at the daily forecast, it predicts a high of 80°F.

So, er, Weather Underground? If your daily forecast differs from your 10-day forecast for the same exact day at the same exact time by 5°F, you have some kind of synchronization error going on in your system...

I never had a problem drinking before 21, in fact I did the majority of my drinking from 18-21.

I actually pretty much stopped drinking a month after turning 21.

We're working at a new construction site and next door one of our "competitors" is do the same thing we are, except way worse using three times the amount of equipment.

Why on earth they decided one person needed three different skid loaders to install sandstone retaining walls (we went with a material that won't disintegrate in five years or less) and grade a yard is beyond me.

My favorite part was the UPS driver dropping off the AC/dehumidifier yesterday and saying, "You're going to need it."

I said, "No I'm not. It doesn't get that hot here."
She got kind of angry at me.

But she did look like she weighed all of 110 pounds and had just delivered 150 pounds worth of stuff to my door, so I figure being ungrateful wasn't the right tactic...

Impus Major would have been a terrible girl.

Today he went to school in his birthday Alestorm kilt. And he kept saying, "I don't want to risk anyone seeing my underwear," so under the kilt is underwear AND a bathing suit.

    *SIGH*.

His Scottish ancestors would be ashamed.

(On the other hand, on her way home yesterday GothBard spotted an ad for U.C. Berkeley on a bus that has a picture that is just scary: It is, I kid you not, Impus Minor's utter twin, except female. Just scary alike.)

Suffice to say one person looked up and then warned everyone else that the answer was "No." We bumped into each other so much because we were all staring at the floor.

    Swim trunks would've been better.

That is super wierd. The age of concent in the netherlands is 16, and marriage is 18 years. You can also start your drivers licence for a car at 18.

I didn't get my driver's license untill I was 23, but that didn't stop me from driving.

Gods, why I'm ecstatic I don't work in an office building:

GothBard's company provides lunch to them on MWF using a food delivery service. Every delivery day, lunch is delivered and every lunch has the employee's name on it so that there aren't any mix-ups.

    Except...

...today the delivery company screwed up and delivered the food to the wrong floor.

And the people on that floor JUST STARTED EATING ALL THE FOOD!!!!

They paid no attention to the names, nor the fact that they hadn't ordered any food. They just saw improperly-delivered food and started chowing down.

If I were in charge of food ordering, I'd sue them on the spot in small claims court. Because that's just beyond "rude", that's behavior that deserves punishment.

EDIT: I mean, let's be clear: The boxes had the company name on them, and if you work in the building, you KNOW the company is there. Each lunch had an employee name on it. So it's not, "Oh, free food from nowhere!", it's, "Oh, this company ordered lunch and the delivery guys screwed up. Too bad for them! We're eating!"

    Sooooo seething right now.

Good thing I set it. I thought I would wake up earlier on my own but decided not to chance it. And also didn't want to have the pressure of being afraid of oversleeping.

My mom's schedule is very similar. She's up at 5 and out of the house by 6 or 6:30, so she can make the 45-minute drive to work and be there by 8 or earlier. In that time she showers, makes coffee, lets the dogs out and back in, makes lunch, and gets to spend a little time with my dad (who works third shift and thus is just coming home at the time she's getting ready to leave).

I on the other hand get quite annoyed if I'm awake before 7, especially if it's close enough to 7 that it's not worth it to try and go back to bed (which tends to round out to any time around 6:30 or later).

But I take much less time to get prepared, don't have to deal with the dogs, have a much shorter drive to work, and don't start work until 8:30. So I can afford the later start.

My usual getup time is 7:15ish, after which I tend to spend 10-15 minutes reading stuff on my phone, get dressed, and leave the house around 7:45ish.

When I was a tween, I routinely slept in until 10:30 am.

Then I got a paper route with my friend, requiring us to get up at 4:30 am on weekdays, 3:30 am on Sundays.

Ever since then, I've been physically incapable of sleeping past sunrise, and typically much earlier than that.

With a decent night's sleep I wake up anywhere from 4:15 to 5:15 am.

If I'm up late playing games with my friends (stupid Borderlands GOTY edition) I might sleep in as late as 6:30 am, but that's about my limit.

And yeah, the company's rating on Google review has dropped from 5.0 to 3.4.

I can't wait to hear how they're going to respond.

More rambling on it for those as wants to know:
GothBard reports that the floor manager in charge of ordering the food went up, said, "How dare you steal other people's food?!? Shame on you!", gathered the uneaten food, and left in a huff.

To me, that's just letting them off waaaaaaay too easy. I would have taken pictures of the half-consumed food and anyone I could see eating it, then filed a small claims suit for at least the cost of the meal (California allows some triple damages cases, so I'd look into that for sure), refuse reimbursement to force their receptionist/floor manager the embarrassment of having to go to court (if possible; I know small claims gets uppity if you refuse the exact same settlement they would have gotten you), and filed a police report for petty theft, because having officers show up and berate the other party for wasting their time is hilarious. The cops always blame the other person, because you're within your rights to file a complaint so they don't yell at you. Usually.

But I don't play games. I go scorched earth. Even for a stupid misdelivered lunch. Because LABELING.

MORE EDITS: Yeah, the choir director knows me all too well. The school district is trying to refuse reimbursement unless we provide original receipts. Knowing exactly what was going to happen to the person trying to enforce that policy, I got a personal text from the choir director saying, "Please don't... yet..."

If I don't have a job forcing me to do otherwise, my natural sleep schedule is and always has been 2 AM to 10 AM, and I will eventually and inevitably slide into that routine if not restrained by outside forces. I am a natural, born and bred second-shifter.

(And yes, they're in my field so I have 15 years of experience in exactly what they do, 20 years in the field, and multiple certifications in exactly the areas they're looking for. I'm pretty sure I could land an interview...)

I figure since I am at a keyboard instead of on my phone, I will give everyone an update.

    The good

    Spoiler:
Mom's confusion and "dementia" were not caused by a stroke. She was pretty incoherent when she was brought in. She is better now. I would say on average, between 40% to 60% coherent.

    The bad

    Spoiler:
Mom's right leg and ankle are swollen up and her right lung has a pocket of fluid pressing against it. She is still pretty out of it and in pain, or at least uncomfortable right now. She is having issues with her breathing (the facemask is helping, no matter how much she hates it). Her heartrate is very high. One of her doctors that has been with my mom for over 3 years is worried about her.

My opinion (probably not worth much)

    Spoiler:
I have a feeling that once they remove the fluid from around her lung, her breathing will get better and her heartrate will go down to a more normal rate. That leave the infection, which might go away with the antibiotics that they are giving her. Right now we are at a coin toss on her getting through this, but I think things will improve if she does get through this. Of course, that still leaves the surgery on the tumor which has been pushed off a bit.

    Another bright side

    Spoiler:
My brother and I are more on the same page than we were when my dad died. That makes my life easier. Plus a lot of my friends have offered sympathy or assistance. Also a help. Sadly it is hurry up and wait right now. Hopefully I can get some sleep in the next day or three. So tired.

Sorry for rambling and being incoherent myself. Blame it on lack of sleep.

Also, I am sorry for being such a downer. I can shut up if you want me to.
