It's less that there's jerks and more that GW seems to be encouraging players with the promise that they'll be able to play roles that will appeal to and encourage the presence of jerks.
They want players to be able to be bandits, be raiders, be saboteurs, etc. etc. etc. because they want to make the world "more realistic" and "truer to Pathfinder/Golarion" by making evil an ever-present threat. Which is great, again, if you're up for that kind of play. Me? I just want to see the pretty world and kill monsters, and not have to worry about getting ganked (and losing most of my equipment, because PFO is going to have "drop your stuff when you die" penalties! YAY!) because I happen to be not paying enough attention to the computer at the wrong moment or have my camera turned to an inconvenient angle when some bandit jumps me.
Say what you will of WoW, the ability to choose between "PvP" and "non-PvP (unless you want to flag yourself)" servers was an immense benefit, and the two years I played religiously would have been much, much shorter if they'd used GW's PvP model.

I truly dislike pvp. It actively rewards poor behavior towards fellow players.

~wry smile~ Well, I for one will not be playing PFO when it comes out. If I get a new computer next year, I might re-install City of Heroes. I have been itching to play it again.
I'm the same way with Neverwinter Nights, or at least this particular pet project. The very first server I played on, way back in 2003, is dusting off the module and working on updating it to be compatible with the most recent upgrades to the game (which themselves are dated somewhere in 2008 I think) and adding some new player-made content (more recent stuff, as up-to-date as last year, perhaps even this year) then launching it for a playtest. If all goes well, they'll get to finishing up the sister module and have their game world back online in a couple of months.
I'm heavily burned out on the server I've been playing on since 2006, and I've not played with this particular group since 2005 or so - about the time the original server went down and we all dispersed to WoW, Guild Wars, EQ2, or other NWN servers - and the whole thing will be a massive nostalgia trip for sure. =)

So Ryan Dancey has come straight out and said "If you don't want any non-consensual PvP in Pathfinder Online this is not the game for you."
I still get the Thornkeep books and stuff so not writing it off as a loss, and now I don't have to decide between playing PFO versus hanging out on the NWN server a bunch of my old online-gaming friends are putting back online.
He really said that? Now I regret giving money to the Kickstarter. I should have saved it for the Fractured Phylactery =\
I loathe PvP. I loathe the grieving, I loathe the thugs who revel in it, I loathe the attitude that goes with it, i just plain loathe that element in MMORPGs
*sigh*
Well, I guess I will write Goblinworks off and stick to EQ.

You still get all the Thornkeep stuff, which includes Buhlman's, Jacobs's, and Mona's subchapters. I still call it a win.

Not when there are a lot of other projects I would endorse with that. Plus, I was really looking forward to PFO. I wanted to be a 'founder' and I figured there'd be enough FAWTLiers to make a decent guild from the getgo. Now I guess since I'm one of those folks who doesn't want a pack of min-maxxed 12-year-olds ganking me every time I ride by a stand of trees I'm not the target audience
*sigh*
Mr Dancey, there's a friggin REASON other MMOs 'bend over backwards' to keep PvP consensual. Because non-consensual PvP SUCKS. Look at who plays it. Heck, EQ is about to shut their Zek server down because no one wants to play on it. They offered all kinds of bonuses to keep the population up. No go.
*sigh*
Quite the s~!$ty way to start my Monday =\
I wonder if I can get a refund

My chiropractor just sent me a bill for $920. I was going, but then quit when I did not have the money to pay the copays. I never finished the treatment and they are charging me as if I had finished. ~curses~ Oh well. F'em!!! I have other things WAY more important than them. I was planning on going back next year, but now I will not.
Orthos |
The Thornkeep bonuses were the only reason I contributed, that and to help get the Pathfinder name some publicity. My time is limited as it is, and at the time I contributed I didn't know there would be a free-to-play option, so I hadn't really thought at all much about playing. Since that latter was revealed my interest peaked, then the PvP thing shot it down.
What are these other projects you would have contributed to? I'm not the best at staying on top of Kickstarter, I really only notice it when someone links me to a thing, and probably wouldn't have known this one even existed if it weren't for the banner they had here on the forums.

While I can see what he is saying about the social ties that some of those other MMOs lack, I have never seen a game with open PvP that did not descend into random ganking.
The best point of reference I have is from those pre-MMO days when I was into MUDding. I was involved in a MUD for a very long time that relied heavily upon the social bonds Dancey is talking about. You know what happens? The gank-happy 12-year-olds join up into their own organization to defend against organized responses from other groups of players. It doesn't make ganking go away, it just forces people with that prediliction to unify.

The funny thing is, PFO is supposed to be focused heavily on groups unifying, working together, controlling land, and spreading their territory. It's basically MMO Risk + fighting monsters.
You just know there are going to be groups who run through, start fires, knock down buildings, etc. and then get the hell out of Dodge before the cops show up. And if they can't do these sorts of drive-bys, they're going to complain that the PvP restrictions on attacking territories are too restrictive.
Nothing ticked me off more in WoW than to have some raiding group sweep through [insert capital city here] and gank all the shopkeepers. Don't try to tell me that won't happen in PFO, especially when your PvP stance is deliberately more allowing of this stuff than WoW. And really, what's more immersion breaking - preventing these people from being killed in the first place, or allowing them to be killed then just having them respawn? Or are they going to die, stay dead, and "yay you have to pay for new shopkeepers!"?

If they try to press the issue of you ignoring the bill I'd recommend lawyering up, but with any luck they won't test their luck.
~shrugs~ It has been over two years since I went and I have no idead if I signed anything. But to be honest, I have more important things that to pay this bill right now.

It wouldn't be the first time I've heard of someone sending the bill as an attempt to test the waters, then not following it up when no money comes rolling in.
Good luck.

Was it just me, or did Dancey come off as a massive prick there?

I have never enjoyed competition. I prefer cooperative games.

That might be it.

It did seem excessively blunt. But then if you head over to the PFO forum, it's perfectly in line with what most of the participants seem to want - in fact, most of them seem to be worried that the PvP rules will be too strict and prevent a lot of things they want to be able to do.
The man may simply know his audience, and it isn't us.
Patrick, that bit about EQ might be worth dropping over on that discussion, if you feel up to braving that section of the forum.

Nah. If that's the tide of sentiment, I'll just put the books on my shelves and dust my hands of the situation. I don't feel like being trolled today particularly. I'm already in a bad mood. I'll just vote with my wallet. I wish this had been more clear in the initial prospectus. I wouldn't have donated to the Kickstarter at all
As for other Kickstarters Orthos there's a lot. Rappan Athuk is still going, and there is a few others. Look at the 3pp threads
So much for a FAWTLY guild. Well, at least so much for me playing PFO. F#&*

Yea. It does suck about PFO. I was looking forward to getting a group of us together and trashing some dungeons. Oh well. I guess PFO forgot about PF's roots in D & D.

Urizen, PvP with non-consensual status means that anyone can attack you , kill you and loot you for your gear.
Imagine playing Pathfinder and the 13-year-old seated next to you attacks your character, kills and loots him. Now imagine this 13-year-olds character is Christmas-treed out from looting a bunch of other characters, so your PC doesn't stand a chance. Would you be having fun?
Now imagine the table holds a million 13-year-olds, and you kinda get where it is going

A very good friend of mine's boyfriend lung collapsed recently and they don't have any insurance. Since you all rallied around me so lovingly (or are going to use it for guilt trips later), I was wondering if you could help her as well.
Loves ya all.
It may be a little bit before I am able to give, but I will donate when I can.

On further reflection, I don't like certain people that compete. I much prefer competing against the computer while teamed up with a friend. Common enemy and all that. There are just some people that take competition too seriously for my taste.

No PvP interest here. Too many munchkins to deal with. Guess I'll be taking a pass on that one, unless they give it a choice option.
