Cleric builds and domains

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I want to help a player to build a cleric or ¿oracle?, but I´m not sure what to say (I´m a specialist wizards specialist). I´ve read some guides and all the core books, and the two options i wouls sugggest are:

A) A cleric with protection and healing domain

B) A cleric without domains and devoted to Gorum (full BAB and
greatsword)

In both cases I would go human (+2 WIS: max 18) or maybe the DM will allow him to be an Aasimar (I really doubt that).

Any piece of advice about domains, builds or any other thing would ve appreciated.

As a general rule, I would advise against focusing on healing for two reasons.
1. Between spontaneous cure spells and channel positive energy, most clerics already have more than enough healing.
2. Healing in combat is not a great idea until you get to high levels, and have spells like heal. Most monsters deal out damage twice as fast as you can heal it.

B is not strictly legal under Pathfinder. The Holy Warrior option was from the 3.5 PF campaign setting. Holy warrior is a good option though, if the GM allows it.

If you have access to the AGP, take a look at the subdomains, they give you even more options.

If he is going to be the main healer then you definitely want him to have the healing domain for the empowered heals, this however is very limiting on the deity options so that may be a deterrent for the player, protection is a pretty solid choice, as is travel, or war if he wants to be more martially focused. I would suggest Sarenrae with the Healing/Good or Sun domains, or Pharasma with the Healing/Knowledge domain. If he wants to be a more combat oriented Iomedae with the War/Law domains is a decent choice.

Edit: As a general rule I suggest focusing on whatever you want, also I have played many a low-level healer and had fun, especially now that at lvl 6 all your heals are empowered.

Silver Crusade

If your going for a casting Cleric / Orical. No greatsword.

Some of the best domain combanations. That I know of are.
Iomedae, Sarenrae : Glory, Sun ( Undead slayer )
Sarenrae : Fire , Healing ( fire and brimstone preacher )
Desna : Liberation, Travel ( Freedome to travel )
Cayden Cailean : Charm, Travel ( Wine and bravery need I say more )
Abadar : Nobiliy, Protection ( Let others do your fighting )

Oricals are much easyer. Mysteries for caster Oricals.
Flame, Heavens, Life, Stone, Waves, and Wind.
My top picks from there are. Flame, Heavens, and Wind.

Now if your going more melee. You need to take a nother look at domains and mysteries.

If you are looking for healing the Oracle of Life is a really good option to me as you can still get channeling and don't need wisdom and charisma to be good at it. The choice of curse on an oracle defines the character to some degree and needs careful consideration for instance clouded vision is a bad choice for an archer and wasting not good if you intend to be the party face.

As to clerics personally i have huge love for the trade sub domain of travel +10 speed to anything you travel on, add 1/2 your level to diplomacy, bluff, and sense motive 3+wis mod times per day and the teleport trick at 8th level is just awsome to me. (even better on an inquisitor :D) Sadly only Abadar grants this of the standard gods, however his other domains are rather good choices so the only down side is the bad favored weapon.

I do not think that he needs to be a healer, I only want to be sure that he does not end up with a weak character in a group of "very carefully built machines of mass destruction".

Many players affirm that oracles are overpowered compared to clerics, but I do not see that. Ok, they are less MAD, there are some nice revelations and one more slot per level. But their saves are not so good, spontaneous casting is something that clerics have partially mastered, they are always one level behind clerics...

I suppose that some mysteries with "arcane offensive spells" and/or extremely good revelations give a new dimention to this divine caster.
