Heroes of might and magic 1 on a Win XP machine?

Video Games

Does anyone know if there is a possibility to make this classic run again? While recently digging through my old PC stuff, I found that game, but as I´m not that computer savvy, I had no success getting it running - just for nostalgia´s sake.

EDIT: I´m talking about the original - from Homm 2 onward, they are running just fine.

I have very little practical experience in this regard, but there is a program called DOSbox which can be used to run old DOS and Windows programs.

I have downloaded games from Good Old Games which automatically installs a version of DOSbox which automatically launches to run old games (such as Master of Magic). If you can't get your old copy to work, and you have 10 bucks to spare, you might buy and download HOMM from GOG (they have it here) which should be set up to launch just fine on contemporary OSes.

Thanks alot, DeathQuaker.

My step-father loves an old game called 7th guest. He hasn't been able to run it on anything for years. I am going to try this out for him and *crosses fingers* hopefully it will work. And maybe it will work on his RISK game too. That game will not SAVE. So my mother hates me for having bought it for him from a bargin bin. He stays up all hours until he finishes the game...because once there was a power failure and he lost the game.

My step-dad doesn't like losing...no matter what the reason :P

Greg

PS: If it works, you will be up to three Dilly points! (I'm keeping track of em now.)

Bookmarked for future use.

Not really directly adding anything, but I wanted to add my support for gog.com. They've got a really great selection of older games that run very well on modern systems and are free of DRM nonsense so they are easy to port between computers or keep your own copies of. They are one of those companies that seems to really be passionate about what they do(much like Paizo) and they do a great job trying to provide games that people love in a way that is easy to play and has as little hassle to it as possible. I think my closest thing to a complain about them would be that their advertising department might use some work.

As for Dosbox, I have had some great experience running older games on it with both Windows XP and Windows 7. It provides very good emulation, bug fixes and there is quite good community support for it.

Some of the old games, I probably won't play ever again. However ... most of games include bonuses, and ... I can't resist a good video game soundtrack.

And since a lot of them are only 5.99$ ... trade your lunch sandwich if you have to, but that's too good to miss on.

I found out in the interim that I have later version, supposedly running on win95. Well, it does - but the game screen is so tiny that it is unplayable. I have the dosbox now, but I guess I´m too dumb to make it work right. I guess I will have to try a little more... Meanwhile, I play HoMM III again.

I have a mega-gold version with all the games and HOMM works ok on XP, however I had to decrease the screen resolution. Yet, the look isn't very good in an old CTD screen, in a modern screen it may look horrible.

DOSBox is very handy, but runs the games at its original resolution iirc.

Sorry Stebehill and Greg. If what you're doing is trying to get stuff to run through DOSBox, maybe you'd get better luck from talking to the users at their forum.

No sorry to it for me. It just will take more time then I was hoping:)

I am certain, I can get 7th Guest to run on it. I am less than certain about Risk. It will be a learning process, and I am a stubburn cuss anymore about learnifyin things. Its good for me. As my departed father would say, "Son, its character buildin'." And one thing I have learned from RPG's over the years is that it is lots o'fun to build characters.

Most Abandonware sites have tips about running certain games under DosBox (i.e. http://www.abandonia.com/ )
About Risk, there are many freeware Java based games based on Risk out there, some of them are really good.

Thanks for the link. I see several old games that look like they might be fun to play again.

Edit - I made it a linkie for you (and the rest of us).
