HeroLabs is admittedly a pay to use product, but it does exactly this, and more.
Also considering how the pricing works out you and your playgroup can EASILY share the cost for any given supplement that comes out for PFRPG. I think all together the suite my friends and I use probably cost about $75 all totaled, and having split the costs 5 ways, I consider that one hell of a deal.

it has a section to add templates :) sadly no skeleton or zombie ones
It is incredible to organize combat.
once combat starts I press a button and it rolls initiative on its own, reducing time to organize

Wish I could take credit. Saw it on the boards some time ago, and forget the original poster's name. Though, it isn't of much use to me... I saved the link for some of the other DM's in my group. I recognize good things...even if I do not partake :P Glad it was of use to your husband and to DMCal.
