Sense Magic

Round 2: Words of Power Discussion

Dark Archive

Sense Magic has the targeting restriction of Sm, Med, or Lg cone only, but is a Level 0 Effect.

Because these cones are only usable at Level 1,3 and 5 respectively, it is not possible to "Detect Magic" as a cantrip, but only as a Level 1 or greater spell.

Was this intentional?

....... With this system you gain flexibility but lose specificity. You can do lots of different things, but you cannot do some of the specific things that straight spells can do. There is just no way to build that level of option into it.. not without a much bigger footprint in the book.

I think the point being made is that sense magic is listed as 0 level, but can never be cast as 0 level.

You could add it to an other effect.

No, you can't. Detection words can't be added to other effects. And even if you could, the level 0 would be meaningless.

Hmm.. the fact that this cannot be cast as a 0 level spell troubles me.

Will have to fix that.

Good catch.

How's this for a fix? Add into sense magic that target words used with it are counted as one level lower. Since it can't be combined with other effects, it's not going to break anything. Or perhaps just make the target effect free and levelless. Even with the best cone attached to it, it's still not as good as detect magic.

wouldn't it be easier to just allow the range of single?
