Lesser and Greater Items

The Exchange Star Voter Season 6

Greetings all,

I'm not sure whether or not this was mentioned anywhere else(I've read all the auto-reject threads and the rules), but I was curious what I should do if I were to think of a Lesser/Greater item combination.

Should I detail both the Lesser and Greater item and throw them into the same post(so you aren't left wondering what the missing item does), leave one or the other out entirely, or just not create a lesser/greater set of items and just use the singular.

I was thinking of including both as a neat twist, but then I feared it might fall over the 300 word count that way and I might get docked for it.

Any thoughts?

I did this once. Ultimately I decided to not do it again because it allowed more possibilities of math errors or being confusing in your description with no discernible gain.

I don't think it's a good idea to submit such a thing.
In fact I assume that this is a auto-reject yet to come.

At best it shows that you can't focus your design enough to decide on one effect for your item.

At worst it might be perceived as a lame way to sneak 2 items into the contest, "doubling" your chances.

I think it would be OK, but not a great idea. As stated, or word count and complications in math especially could get you into trouble. Often Greater items do one spell up the chain or just more times per day. The metamagic rods are able to explain greater and lesser in just a few words and if you can do that OK. But really it is kind of boring, especially for a Superstar item.

Well, I only wished to do so as I had a pretty nailed down concept for an item but there is a feature that adds a lot to the cost that I could see being the singular 'greater' ability.

Most of the greater/lesser pairs have a tightly balanced item and a greater version that adds either an extra ability that still fits the theme, or simply increases a bonus.

My item essentially has a single extra effect that increases the cost and expands the usage of it quite a bit.

I feel confident of my ability to create a lesser and greater version succinctly and correctly costed, I was really hoping to hear from one of the judges on whether this sort of thing is on their auto-reject list, or if this wouldn't be seen as an exemption and would get you rejected for violating the rules (only 1 item submission, and word limit).

See, I know the judges accept the bending of the 'auto-reject' rules in that bending rules can also make things great. But there have also been those in the past disqualified for breaking the word limit.

Basically: Would having a lesser/greater pair be considered rule bending, or breaking?

If your greater version is such an natural and great addition to your item I would recommend you to either:
Submit the greater version right away. After all it does all the lesser version does and some more.
Or
Submit the lesser version and make it awesome enough to make the Judges come up with their own visions of a greater version of this item.

In either case your item should be interesting enough to keep the Judges thinking about it, coming back to it. This includes thinking about possible other versions ( like greater and lesser) of this item.
But don't advertise it as a greater or lesser version or mention other versions existing. Let them come up with their own ideas about your item.
In this way They'll always remember your item (even if it's their own version they like better) and thats what'll keep you in the "keep" pile.

Take a look around the top 96 and you'll see that many people have come up with their own versions/uses/interpretations of these very items. That's something you want. Get people thinking, getting creative. Make them want to use your item. Because that will show that you have the potential to be a Rpg-Superstar Designer.

If you want some official words on this you should post in the Rpg-Superstar 2011 forum. This one is last year's ...

That's some pretty decent advice... and also thanks for the note! I was looking through the older items and I guess I didn't go back far enough in the forum structure to get to the right place to post.
