Edmonton Pathfinder Lodge Open for Business!

Grand Lodge 4/5

This is the official announcement of the creation of the Edmonton Pathfinder Lodge, offering a home and support for Pathfinders in Edmonton and Alberta. We are working hard to promote Pathfinder Organized Play both in our fair city and provincially. We have begun running monthly Gamedays here in Edmonton on the second Saturday of every month (you can find the next one by searching for events near you).

You will also find me running some tables at MythaCon, January 14 to 16, 2011 in Calgary, Alberta. Check out their website in the coming days for more details, and I’ll have that Event up here very soon.

All our Gamedays welcome new players, and we are ready to get you playing in no time at all. If you are interested in getting more involved, say by volunteering to GM, IM me here on the message boards and we can talk.

If you have any questions regarding Pathfinder Organized Play in Edmonton, feel free to IM me here or email me at the address listed with our Event.

I look forward to seeing you at the next Gameday!

Well met, Northron! We're just 13 hours down the Yellowhead in Winnipeg. Glad to see more Canadian lodges opening - I know there's a lot of players, but it seems mostly home games outside of Toronto.

You guys should come down to KeyCon here in May - I really hope to have PFS running in full force then. (Or before, of course - we play every second Tuesday - check the Events page for upcoming games.)

Cool...might have to drop by for the Calgary event. I just moved from Edmonton to Calgary and hoping we get a lodge organized here.

A trip to Alberta is a little out of my budget right now, but let me know if there is anything else that I can do to help.

@Lamplighter: I have been meaning to get to KeyCon for years now, so this may be the time to do it.

@Black Dougal: Good luck on getting PFS going in Calgary! We should talk sometime; maybe we can set up some inter-city events every once in a while. Maybe a weekend event every 4-6 months? Let me know what you think...

@K Neil Shackleton: Thanks! I'll definitely touch base with you if I need help down the line.

I'm excited to get this on the go, and grow the hobby here. We had a thriving Living Greyhawk community for a number of years, and a lot of those people switched to PF instead of sticking with the sinking boat of 4E. :) So I'm hopeful we can get a thriving Lodge going here.

Not to Derail but...
Black Dougal - I have tried a couple of time to get a PFS table going at the D&D meetup at the Sentry Box without success. I would be very interested in participating in Calgary.

PDiidy - Cool, I plan on getting more organized in the new year and start gaming..its been a bit of a drought since I moved down here.

Also LoL..because I just realized I know Northron, he and I have played Pathfinder together before when I lived In Edmonton..he was a wise ass elven diplomat in Korvosa and I was a bumbling Paladin who managed not to get laid in a whorehouse.

I remember that session fondly, though I wish I had made it out for more. Tara was/is a good GM, and it was shaping up to be a lot of fun.

Good to hear from you, Black Dougal! Now I know PFS will be in good hands if we can get it going in Calgary. :)

Not a derail at all, Pdiddy. If we can get PFS going in Calgary, it will inevitably make the Society play stronger in both our cities. And it raises the possibility of doing some inter-city hosted events every once in a while.

Btw, dates are up for the next three Gamedays, January through March. I'll have the scenarios for January up soon, and each month's scenarios will go up shortly after the previous Gameday finishes.

Have a great holidays, all, and hopefully we'll see you in January!

I have a question that my fellow PFS members have been inquiring about. Perception checks have come up as an issue in regards to traps and I would like some clarification. I have looked at several threads on the board and it seems that there has been no resolution to this.

Is Perception passive, or is it something that the players need to actively ask for. Some interpret the rule as, in order to find the trap you must be actively searching for it, and others interpret it as, if I step on it, I automatically make a perception check to notice it prior to setting it off.

3rd edition stated that you had to "search" for traps. 4th edition goes by a players passive perception. Pathfinder, as having been toted as 3.75 seems to leave this a little grey. What is the official ruling of the above?

I didn't say prior to setting it off. I said to avoid setting it off.

P 417 CRB "Creatures that succeed on a Perception check detect a trap before it is triggered."

If you sense it before it goes off, you wouldn't set it off unintentionally. It's not just to get a reflex save or something. You get a reflex save against things you aren't even aware of... like an invisible caster throwing fireball at you.

"Most Perception checks are reactive, made in response to observable stimulus." "Perception is also used to notice fine details in the environment. The DC to notice such details varies depending
upon distance, the environment, and how noticeable the detail is." So factoring for distance, conditions, distractions can increase the DC. Running down a hall being chased by an enemy will distract you and make it more likely to set off a trap...

To me, the comparison would be that you get a perception check before combat even if the opponent is invisible. If you fail, you don't act in the surprise round. If you succeed in seeing/hearing/smelling him... combat will proceed by initiative.

So, even against hidden things, a reactive perception check is the norm. Only 6 of the core classes have perception as a class skill, so a lot of PCs will be in trouble still.

As far as our discussion about the trap on the other side of the door, that's a +5DC to perception (table Perception p 102 CRB) , which increases the CR of the trap by 1 (see Table 13-3 p 422 CRB).

The reactive perception vs traps is a last ditch chance for a player to not get in trouble. Just as the perception to notice a hidden combatant is there to protect him.

The way it's written is clear, it's just very different from previous ways of doing things. But it's not the only thing that's changed. Acrobatics instead of Jump and Tumble, Stealth instead of Move Silently and Hide... Some things are just more streamlined in Pathfinder.

I'm happy to take my Rogues through entire dungeons taking 20 on every square, but that bogs down the game and is one of the big complaints of other players. This seems like another case of them streamlining something so it works for everyone. A pushy fighter is still going to fall into a trap if he doesn't have the patience to let a rogue roll one perception per room. And you still have to disable the traps. That's not always easy either.

I see where you are getting your interpretation Sean and I absolutely agree with what you are saying. I will ensure that this is used correctly in the future and I thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Great to hear guys! As for the "mostly home games outside of Toronto" -- hey -- there was no in-store PFS in Toronto at all until three months ago. (The only established in-store game prior to July was in Oshawa, which is WELL outside Toronto or its immediate suburbs). We're still very much in the "newborn stage" here with two stores and about 30 regulars. I'd like that to be four stores and 120 regular players, but we'll get there. It's a city of 5.5 million people. We can do much better than we are right now!

Still, it takes a while to grow the player base and, just as importantly, develop the PFS GMs to enable the local organization to grow and recruit more players aggressively. I'm sure you'll have a similar experience.

Good luck!

Not so far as "The Centre Of The Universe" thinks (except at rush hour) ;)

Bringing this thread back to Edmonton PFS... ;)

If you are in Edmonton and want to join in the PFS fun, check out our Obsidian Portal Page for ongoing information about events and games.

We run monthly Game Days at The Adventurer's Guild as well as PFS scenarios on Monday nights. We are looking at expanding to other stores in the city soon; info will be posted here and on Obsidian Portal as that happens.

And if you have any questions feel free to contact me, I'm always happy to help!

See you at the gaming table soon!

I tried to go to that site and sign in, but have had trouble. I would like to see the scene at your events.
Thanks

Because of the nature of Obsidian Portal, it won't display the calendar unless you are a member of the website. If anyone would like access to our calendar, then please feel free to e-mail me and I will set you up.

It's great to see that our group is growing in leaps and bounds, so come join us at the tables and have some fun.
