The weights are generally too heavy on weapons. Even with the possible rationalization of baldrics and scabbards (which really don't weigh that much) a good amount of weaponry doesn't even have sheathes.
Armor weights are fairly accurate based upon some limited research.
Miscellaneous gear is probably where the most discrepancies come into play.
Honestly,
That's not really a point. The rules are basically the worlds physics. Those physics say that weapon X weighs Y, and Strength A can lift pounds B.You could just as easily fix the weapons and miscellaneous equipment, and then downgrade the Weight per STR point to adjust appropriately, which would be the same thing. Basically, the rules have a limit on how much you can carry to keep people from carrying statue pedestals in their backpacks with a 7 str. Whether the swords or saddle bags are right or not is moot, as long as everyone treats a medium longsword as the same weight.

Agreed. Someone decided that was about right based more than likely on what is presented in the 1e AD&D PHB. Remembering also that the 'weights' are reflections of encumbrance. A 50 lb object designed to be worn on the back is a lot less of a problem than a 50 lb object with a single handle that can really only be carried by one hand. Volume counts as well as weight.
Do people find that the current values impact on their game in practise?

I like tracking coin weight, and I think it makes a ton of sense to do so. Mainly because a lot of coin is often found in the middle of nowhere. It makes no sense for a party to stumble on a pile of copper coins and carry all 7,000 of them 50 miles back to the nearest town or city. Yet there's always someone who wants to try.
My Alkenstar-born scattergun-wielding Inquisitor used copper pieces as a cheap and continually renewing source of shot. Take that in your eye, monsters! That'll teach you to mess around with all that small change.
