I'm going to do this example using curly brackets, so that the board doesn't try to make it an actual spoiler. For your own efforts, use square brackets.
{spoiler}*stuff to hide*{/spoiler}
or
{spoiler=This is where I've hidden stuff}*hidden stuff*{/spoiler}

I think I´ve mentioned this before, but I think it would be very helpful to many users if instead of having to type out the correct bracket code, that there were simple buttons which ´pasted in´ the code
(if text was selected when the button is pressed, the brackets could be wrapped around the selection, if nothing was selected, the text cursor placed inbetween them)
And even though I´m do and can type the brackets out myself, I´d find it more convenient with buttons.
This doesn´t require shifting to a WYSIWYG text editor or anything else,
but would make using the features of brackets alot easier and available to more posters.
I´m aware of other forums which work exactly like this (non WYSIWYG) and it seems to work just great,
even with many more styles/options available than Paizo currently offers.

When we first built the site (and the boards), a significant number of potential customers still routinely browsed the web without JavaScript and other "advanced" features that make that kind of stuff possible, and so we designed for a lower common denominator. These days, even mobile devices have more advanced functionality, so we've slowly been bringing in more modern features as we have opportunities, and easier messageboard markup is on the to-do list.
