Need someone to recommend some minis...

Miniatures

I'm hoping to get my PFRPG campaign up and running soon, and I need some advice on good minis to use. I'm going to be running encounters primarily on the Basic Flip-Mat. I'm looking for something cheap, pre-painted, and where the base size makes sense for 1 square = 5' for tactical encounters. I have a lot of old Mage Knight minis, would those work? If there are better ones out there, where may they be found? Thanks for your help :)

The bases on Mage-Knight minis tend to be a bit large, but other than that they should work fine. If you don't plan to keep using them for Mage-Knight games, you can cut the bases off and place them onto smaller bases.

I use the D&D minis and they work great. (I also use a few from reaper, but they were not pre-painted..)

+1 for the D&D miniatures - you can pick em up reasonably cheaply on the interwebs or here at Paizo's store.

Reaper do have their Legendary Encounters line that are pre-painted plastic versions of some of their metal figs but I can't vouch for their quality... will probably decent

Hope this helps!

+2 for DDM. They really are very good quality plastic minis. The only downside is that they were originally made for a skirmish game so a lot of the pieces are priced due to in-game value like magic cards and the like. You can buy them here at the paizo store, or trollandtoad or ebay or what have you. Go to ddmdb.com to search for what you want beforehand.

Have fun!

Elfsera do some nice pre-painted pewter minis.

Besides the D&D, Reaper Legends, and Mage Knight minis, are there any other pre-painted plastic minis on the market? I have been looking for mounted units...

Rackham's Confrontation line is prepainted plastics, with some really nice miniatures. A little more expensive, but they do have mounted units available.

Here's a link to a sale on Paizo.com for the Rackham prepainted plastics:

I'll second (third?) the suggestion of the Rackham prepaints. These minis, while certainly more expensive than D&D minis (which I dig and use the heck out of, don't get me wrong), are heads-and-shoulders above the quality of anything else out there. And they are posable, even! The Wolfen units (I use them as big gnolls) have moveable arms and waists, so you can really make the same figure look totally different by changing the pose. Adds a lot of variety, and there are some KILLER mounted units for sale from Paizo on Sean's link.

Yo man, i was in the same predicament. Go look up the old school D&D minis, you can get awesome deals on Ral Patha and grenadier minis on ebay. And a pro tip, just buy what you plan to use, buying random lots isnt as good as you think.

Also, LoTR minis are cheap.

EDIT: If you dont care to have the exact minis.. Star wars minis are super cheap and 28mm scale.
Also, paper minis!

I took a look at the Rackham minis, they look really cool! How is the scale of the Rackham minis? Do they run big like the mageknight stuff or are they fairly close to the D&D minis?

Rackham's plastics are based on the same masters as their metal minis. They aren't as big as Mage-Knight minis.

Rackham's stuff will be very large in comparison to D&D. Their metals at least were a whole head taller than similar models from other manufacturers.

Most of my friends who have loads of plastic minis found them for cheap on E-Bay or were able to buy them for cheap off a FLGS that was trying to clear out their stock. It may take a little hunting.

As much as I looooove minis (and love the painting hobby and all that) if you don't want to go hunting for "the right one" for every model you need, there are some GREAT paper token printouts and the like available here and elsewhere. The nearby thread on gluing clear glass blobs to paper tokens also is really great for something fairly easy and cost effective. Mounted nicely, paper tokens can look very nice and might save you a lot of trouble if you're having trouble finding the prepaints you need.

Good luck!

In a pinch, the paper minis are always winners. I typically follow the method outlined in the .pdf instructions, with one alteration: I glue the mini's base to a bit of sheet styrene (AKA leftover hotel room card) and then cut it to size. One swipe with a Sharpie later, I have a very durable, extremely stable paper mini.

I also really dig Ashton Sperry's art style.

Well, I'm Welsh, so that makes me officially foreign and allowed to not get your obscure references.

I'm not even going to look it up online, just out of spite :b

Here's an Azmyth Frugal-Gamer tip...

Miniatures Market is blowing out their stock of the Horror Clix game.
They are easily removed from the clix bases (in most cases) and are a good scale to work for PF. Some figs were as cheap as .02¢ ea!
Litko makes mini bases in a wide variety of materials and sizes. I used the 1" and 2" square wood bases (@ 100 count, they are .12¢ ea)

A tube of Super Glue, a little touch up paint and Viola'!

(I just did this for the Gamers without Borders Project)

As soon as finish the batch for Cuba, I'll post some pics on the Gamers w/out Borders thread.
I'm certain that other lines of the clix game also hold gems to be converted!

Thanks for this link! I nabbed a few cool transparent minis, always good for ghosts or elementals!
