I want to buy Pathfinder

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

here is my sad 4th edition history.

Look sadly i get caught in the trap of the "evil wizards company" and their new version of D&D, at first i think "well this is new and awesome, and noob friendly" i even played a entire campaing (sorry i was so young xD). from lvl 1 to lvl 30 with my hometown friends.

time passed and even i buy more books!, everything was fine and so "Combats of Encounter-At-Will-Repeat till you need to use a daily" until i buy "Dark Sun" when my rpgheart broke, ive heard that thousands of ppl have complained about how wizards destroyed Forgotten Realms but i really dont care until they put their greedy hands into my Athas. ¬ ¬

Was that moment that i say, f%$# 4th edition..i wanna try something else.

So im thinking in maybe friday go to local store and buy a copy of the corebook, even if in my country its a little bit pricey but anyways i do this because of recomendations of a good friend of mine and also because we are playing since the last sunday a pathfinder game.

So guys i wanna read you, plz give me your best recommendations (shot!).

btw, sorry for my s$#%ty english.

Welcome to the boards!

I can only say one thing toward 4E fuff. Just like with any other game, just use what you like and drop the rest :)

Are you looking for something paricular?

If you are interested in getting into it before getting the book, you can click on the link to the left labeled "PRD". This is the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Reference Document. It has all of the basic rules you'll need to start playing.

Here is the link if you have trouble locating it.

If you liked 3.5e, you will like PF. The book itself is beautifully produced and presented. Still suffers from some of the legacy issues of the d20 system, but none are game breakers unless your players are jerks.

If you have a cash available then PF is a game you will not regret buying. As you seem to have not had too many issues with the "battles as a boardgame" of 4e then PF's combat won't cause you any headache as it too has a "boardgame" based combat system.

Other than that, the Core book and Bestiary is all you need for a life time of roleplaying. Everything else is optional and adds very little extra to the basic game.

Well worth the money,
S.

Well, I have to say for Pathfinder... they know what rpg fans want. The Adventure Paths are amazing, two whole campaigns a year and the ones I've read through are just really well written. Their experience publishing Dungeon really shows. The core classes, all 18 of them, are really well balanced. I'd like to see an official Pathfinder book on PCs of other races, namely elemental-kin (genasi), orcs, and minotaurs. That's one thing 4e does have on Pathfinder, race selection. The Core book is awesome, if you're familiar with 3.5 you can just jump right in. As a fan of Dark Sun, you may be disappointed that as yet, there's not a strong psionics system in place, and there may not be. (I'm pretty sure the psionics aren't OGL, could be wrong). However, the world of Golarion is one that I've fallen for, as I fell for Eberron, Krynn, and Toril before (all great settings). Golarion is on par with these.

Be warned though that a lot of Pathfinder is at least 80% rehash. With 20% new rules. If you really dislike 3.5 than I say go for it. If you are happy with 3.5 and all its flaws at most download the 10$ PDF and mine what you want from it. The core book is worth picking up yet make sure you want or need to spend the moeny first. For myself while I still like 4E I wanted a secondary D&D game and went for PF. Pointless imo to buy the 3.5 books again with PF around. Don't apologize for playing 4E. No reason you cannot have both. This is from a guy who used to be a huge 4E fan.

First let me say sorry 4e wasn't for you.

If you was a fan of 3.5 DnD then you should love Pathfinder. Basically it is 3.5e cleaned up a little, tweaked, better balanced etc. Others have pretty well covered some of the changes. Just keep in mind there is a lot of small changes that creates a whole picture that is hard to truly appreciate the game, with out just playing it with all the changes.

thank you for your responses.

yes i love the 3.5 version of D&D, sadly i cannot buy enough OGL books or anything more related to the brand besides the dmguide, monster manual and players handbook.

but yes im gonna give pathfinder a try! this friday im gonna buy the corebook and maybe put a game to my friends, the only thing that maybe will stop me a little bit is that 2 of my friends dont know so much english to read a character sheet, i think im gonna work with the indesing and make some sheets in spanish for them. (i forgot to say, im from mexico) :D

btw, the adventure paths are fking awesome! Council Of Thieves and Curse of the crimson throne looks cool.

Oks im going for the corebook and i hope so in a week buy the bestiary,

¿do you recommend me to buy the advanced player guide? (ive looked at the new classes and they kick-ass, i love the witch, oracle and summoner)
¿and what other books do you recomend me?

I would say start slow. The APG is great yet if you are on a budget when it comes to buying new gaming material start with the Core and Besitaray along with DMs screen. Get APG later. I would get the Gamemastery guide first as it maybe more useful to you as a DM. Just curious how much more does ti cost you. I live in Quebec and french rpgs are just overpriced. the Pathfinder core goes for 80-85$ because of "translation costs". It's not like French is that difficualt a language imo.

Stick with the Core and Bestiary for a while. The APG while nice isn't that overly great, it's extra stuff for sure, but not vital to a fun game. Unless you are a collector or have tonnes of cash laying around then, as most have said, start slow. The PF Core book is A LOT to digest and A LOT of play is contained within. Once you start reading the classes in the Core book you will want to play everything!

I'd start with the core book, the bestiary, and some adventures for right now.

You might want to check with some of the other groups playing in Spanish. Some are mentioned on this thread: aqui.

No one here should be telling you how to spend your money. On the other hand the existence of the SRD sites makes a "try before you buy" very easy. So go ahead and dive into them and you'll be set to make the choice yourself.

If you love 3.5, pathfinder is the way to go. Hands down, it is a great game. All my friends have now switched over and not a single one regrets it. (Maybe because i bought all the books?)
