This happened to a friend of mine, my best friend from high school.
She was 5 years old, living in a tiny cheapass apartment with her single mother. Single Mom worked for the government and was barely paid enough for them to survive. Single Mom was forced to sit her 5 year old daughter down and tell her that they couldn't have a Christmas that year because they needed the money to pay for food and rent.
No Christmas tree, no presents, no celebration, no nothing.
The neighbors at the apartment complex heard tale of this situation and on Christmas Eve took the pair out for the day. Meanwhile, in that tiny cheapass apartment set up a Christmas tree, decorations, a room full of presents, and gave them the food needed for a Christmas dinner.
There is a Santa Claus.
