Gridless Pathfinder

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So lately, the whole deal with a grid has been bothering me. I understand why squares (or hexes) simplify things on a table, but our group has been using maptools lately. If you're using a computer though, measuring your movement could be truly free. You could have spell effects truly be circular, cones that are well, cone shaped, lines that could go at a 45 degree angle with out being jagged. Now I understand you could turn off grid snapping in maptools, however, free form DnD/Pathfinder isn't supported very well.

So anyway, I'm going to put on my wishlist of things to be developed, is a program that supports a freeform map. Now I know a lot of people might just suggest an art program, but can the art program be edited to allow you know, separate GM screen and player screens, keeping track of initiative and hp, allow fog of war, show the distance of an attempted move in an easy to see spot, etc.

I love the idea, but how would it work? Would everyone look at a monitor?

I'd love to have it set up on a network. Like I said, we use maptools. Everyone in my group has a laptop, so I mean everyone would have their own monitor.

Cool!

yeah, except then everyone will be face down in their lap tops instead of interacting at teh table. And have chat and FB and a ton of other stuff open. Get a projector and a magnetic white board for minis and have a go at it with yours being the only lap top at the table. IMO/E, much more gooder.

Lantern Lodge

Once you start arguing about milimetars of distance required for AoO, you're gonna start missing the good old grid :D

Um, like I've said we already use map tools, and although we use laptops for the battles we're fine. If laptops were a problem before, then we would never dealt with them in our games long enough for me to have this idea.

Well that's why I wanted to have circles be our representatives. :3 What I'm imagining would have it so that it shows the AoO of an enemy if you hover over them. It would also add more realism when it comes to things like dog piling. Yay for computers that can do the math for us!

I have thought about getting a D&D Insider subscription so that I could use their software. During the gaming session we could connect the PC to my bigscreen and manage everything from there. That would be freaking awesome.
