Armor Trimming V1.5

Homebrew and House Rules

In the original thread, I homebrewed a rule that made body shape be a factor for all armor, and then someone suggested adding armor customization options like stylings and accessories. I agree, but I think that it would be pointless to only have it be purely cosmetic.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, yeah. I nearly forgot to show the rule. Here it is:

All armor must be individually fitted to it's owner by an armorsmith during the crafting proccess, although captured armor can be refitted to a new owner for a cost. (2d4×25 gp for light armor, 2d4×50 gp for medium armor, and 2d4×100 gp for heavy armor)

With the exception of full-plate armor, anyone can wear armor that is not fitted for them, but they incur a penalty while they wear such armor. Wearing ill-fitting light armor worsens the armor bonus, maximum dexterity bonus, and armor check penalty by 1 and increases the arcane spell failure chance by 5%. (Medium armor worsens by 2 and 10%, and heavy armor worsens by 3 and 15%) Characters that do not normally incur a spell failure chance for wearing armor incurs a spell failure chance for wearing ill-fitting armor.

/bump

In a game I played in run by one of the Paizo guys, my human character put on some chainmail that was previously owned by a deurgar. Due to the awkward fit, he said the AC bonus decreased by 1 and the ACP increased by 1. We never got around to having it adjusted, and my spells weren't affected by armor.

If I were to implement something like your houserule in my game (which I probably wouldn't), I would allow a Craft (armor) check to fit the armor to a new owner. The DC would be the same as that to craft it. I think the prices are too high. You would be paying for a day or less of the armorer's time, and maybe 10% or the original cost for material.

Since arcane spell failure chance from armor only affects spells with a somatic component, I will leave it as is. The penalties are based on the armor constricting your movement or wasting momentum from loosely flapping you. I would use the same craft(armor) DC as the one to make the armor.

I hope you guys had a happy Easter!

Some of the costs to refit armor are more expensive than just buying the basic armor itself. That does not seem quite right to me.

While it could be justified for magic armor it still seems extremely expensive.

Average cost to refit medium armor is going to be 350 gold. You could buy master crafted scale male for the same cost as a size adjustment and I would dare say mastercrafting a whole suit of armor is more work and materials than a fitting adjustment.

Ok, so 10% of crafting cost, excluding full-plate?

You can modify the price on a case by case basis, but if the refitting is only adjusting straps, changing where things are laced together, or modifying some chain links then I don't think the cost needs to be high. Modifying existing armor takes less time and less material than making something new. If you think the T&M is greater, then make it more than 10%. Maybe you'll decide that certain metal plates or bands are too small, cannot be reused, and so need to be replaced with some of the correct size.
