Why not stop adventuring at level 10, settle down in a nice castle and raise a village or kingdom in your name? Find a wife who is scary enough to threaten you and you should be happy the rest of your days.
If you are a spellcaster use your powers to make your land beautiful and bountiful, if you are a warrior use your skills to train a powerful militia and conquer whole cities or work as a captain of the guard for a powerful capital.

Maybe stuff keeps happening. New monsters show up to threaten people or places that you care about. Trouble keeps finding you, so you keep having to deal with it.
Or
Maybe at level 10 you probably can't afford a castle, village, or kingdom, and settling down to a big house isn't quite the ultimate goal of golden-year retirement plans toward which you have been striving.
Or
Maybe you're just not finished exploring. Whatever it was that compelled you to become an adventurer and set out into the wide and dangerous world, whatever that is, it's still compelling you to keep doing it, keep exploring, keep adventuring, keep setting out for parts of the wide and dangerous world you haven't seen yet.
Or
Maybe you are all about the power. 10th level is nothing. You're a big fish in your little backwater pond, but move up to the big game and find some new ponds, lakes, oceans, and you'll find you're still a fairly small fish - and maybe you know that, and maybe you're not OK with settling for that.
Or
Maybe your quest isn't finished. Maybe you set out to find out who killed your brother, or who kidnapped the princess, or why all the dragons vanished, or whatever. But you haven't got all the answers yet so you keep looking.
Or
Maybe it's just a lot more fun than growing old and decrepit in some dusty old castle somewhere.

I pretty much don't.
Most of my characters retire by level eight or so anyway, and I tend to like building stuff / affecting the world, so academies and temples and stuff are the way to go.
When I do have a character who wants to continue killing stuff and acquiring power forever and ever, it's because the DM said that I could play an evil character. My good characters aren't that acquisitive or power-hungry or addicted to killing. They have goals, and once those goals are accomplished, they like to walk away from the endless bloodshed and 'just one more spell!' addiction, and build something.

The reasons each of my characters fought in the Adventure Paths:
Rise of the Runelords (first attempt)
Furbren "Hobo" Kepbrand (Halfling Favored Soul/Spherewalker) fought not just to spread the word of Desna, he fought to protect his wife (Shalelu, to the surprise of all involved) and newborn son, Laias.
Curse of the Crimson Throne
Kyle Surlent (Human Crusader/modified Holy Liberator) fights to protect his friends in the adventuring party- after Gaedren Lamb had his wife murdered, he sees them as his adopted family.
Second Darkness
Myself (Human Dungeon Master/Elder Chaos Godling, Insane) against the rest of my group because they're trying to convince me to run this as a Star Wars game. And I really don't want to run Second Darkness again. Ever.
Legacy of Fire
Zayishah al-Wujud (Human Fighter/Dervish/Tempest) fights to avenge the honor of her father, the last bearer of the awakened scimitar Desert Wind. (She currently has it, though without any of its legacy powers just yet.)
Council of Thieves
Mercutio (Half-Elf Bard) didn't exactly have time to have a cause to fight for, mostly because he died terribly due to me having to miss a few sessions. Oh well. On the plus side, this is the first one of my characters to actually die in an AP.
Kingmaker
Ekaterina "Katya" Merchova (Human Scout/Order of the Bow Initiate) fights partially for the affection of a fellow party member, but primarily to one-up her jerkass half-sister Natasha, who is the definite favorite of the Merchova family.
Rise of the Runelords (second attempt)
Vanedel "Van" Fitz-Owen (Gnome Ranger/Fighter/Gnome Giantslayer) fights for similar reasons as Kyle up above, only switch "dead parents/siblings" for "dead wife." That, and he enjoys irritating the paladin in the group.
Carrion Crown (planned)
Eisener Ironhammer (Dwarf Cleric of Torag/Sacred Purifier) fights for nebulous reasons that will be explained once the player's guide comes out. =p

Maybe that explains Brett Favre.
Exactly. You know what play he'll use to win the Super Bowl this year?

Because the DM/other players want to keep going.
Because I haven't gotten all the cool abilities I envision the character having.
Because that dragon just burned down my favorite tavern.
Because the BBEG got away (again) last time.
Because I don't want to play Accountants & Actuaries.
Because the DM doesn't want to run Accountants & Actuaries.
Because the other players don't want to play Accountants & Actuaries.
Any of the above singly or in combination.
And on a personal note - Because I hate 1st level play and don't want to start a new character at 1st level.

Metric, I had two characters settle down after the first adventure..
..they realised they could buy 20 sheep and some tents and decided to enjoy life as shepherds.
I ran with it and we had some interesting encounters (Goblin sheep thieves, wolves, going to market.)
Very strange. Quite (Quiet?) fun as well! :)

However, typically in our campaigns, the characters are resting/enjoying life after the last adventure when SUDDENLY ANOTHER CRISIS/EVENT OCCURS!
Which, naturally, requires their presence!
..even some of the chaotic ones (Another night of drunken wenching and blowing crap up! HUZZAH! However, a fair few almost define their chaotic nature by sitting around impatiently waiting for some crisis to save them from the 'bordem'.
May you live in interesting times......
However, personal character motivations have included:
- Terminal Curiosity.
- ..because the charcter party needs them!
- Power
- The chance to kill lots and lots of things.
- A promise.
- ..because their God is a pushy son of a..
- To prove something.
- A chance to build a utopian society.

Because I haven't ascended to godlike power yet?
Because I haven't found the secret to eternal life yet?
Because I don't care about other people?
Because nature never stops advancing, so why should I?
Because even a whole country of my own is not enough?
Because evil only triumphs when good men do nothing?
Because MY party will be the one to get through the temple of elemental evil?
Because no matter what you give them, people will always hold the desire to become better?
