Topics to Avoid

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So from my time on Paizo's Forums, I've learned a few topics to avoid (some of which I had fallen into myself because of weak search-fu)

> "Broken" threads - Any thread that states class/spell/ability/etc is broken, overpowered, or useless.
> Balance threads... which include "broken" threads
> Alignment threads:
> Paladin Code of Conduct
> Paladin of (different alignment)
> Alignment Stupidity - Lawful Stupid, Chaotic Obnoxious
> Animating Undead, is it Evil?
> Evil Clerics and Healing
> Realism threads:
> Fighters surviving humanly impossible falls
> Fighters wielding Giant Weapons
> What is hp really?
> Vancian vs Power Points
> Psionics

Really though, if you're tired of the topic, please just let it alone and it will probably die. Don't bump it with complaints. :|

Are there any other pit trap topics that I should watch out for?

I think the list would be shorter if we named things that don't start flamewars. Like...kittens!

Things like the Book of the Nine Swords and some other 3.5 things

oh and avoid the words munchkin and and overpowered

Also GM rights versus Players rights! thats a big one!

Arithmetical modeling of just about anything beyond clearly defined DPR builds with clearly defined premises.

You got it almost right. The proper answer is of course:

Anything.

Anything, any topic or post can start a flamewar.

Silver Crusade

How dare you say that anything can start a flamewar!

Not to derail, but I'm not sure I've ever seen an "Evil Clerics and Healing" thread. What are the major positions? In a nutshell, please, I'd hate to start a "Flamewar" :P

I agree that anything can start a flamewar, perhaps even this one ^^

I would however disagree to formulating topics to avoid like that. It's more the philsophy/general question topics that one should avoid. Like "what is Roleplaying really about?"

Specific question with specific answers lead to interesting threads most of the time. For example "is the pit spell more powerful than most lvl 2 spells?", however in general asking if a spell is "broken", that would cause a flamewar, mainly because most people are allergic to the word "broken", because everybody uses it, because a lvl 20 warrior makes 1 more damage with one weapon rather than with another.

However what would help to avoid flamewar would be to make the possiblity for poll-threads, where people just get multiple-choice options, this would be great for philosophy threads, and could probably help market-research for Paizo.

Anyway, I think the realism of the alignement-system compared to HP-points is broken with healing evil clerics who raise undead with fighter classes who wield huge weapons that aren't balanced compared to psionics using the powerpoint system but not the vancian system except for paladins without the code of conduct who survived impossible high falls. This opinion is true and you can't prove me wrong, Discuss! :D

Not too many positions you can take in a nutshell really, it's too cramped. Plus healing in one is kinda hard, it blocks line of site, and if it's big enough to fit a human in, it's walls are probably thick enough to block line of effect for that positive channeling.

Damn nut shells, they're so broken we should remove them from the game.

Well while anything can start a flame war, the topics I mentioned are likely to get you, "This, again really?". I'm not saying that you shouldn't ask about questions you have, but certain topics you need to do a search on I suppose. Topics that use the term "broken" get flamed really fast though.

As for the evil clerics and healing, it asks why evil clerics can't channel positive energy but good clerics can do necromancy which leads to asking why animating undead is evil in the first place.

Is there a way for me to rename this thread as "Topics to avoid asking again"

In all seriousness, some things — like discussions of alignment — can be very valuable to GMs in need of guidance... but they tend to degenerate quickly into useless bickering.

My personal solution (which I sometimes fail to observe) is:

  • Only respond to threads that ask a sincere question.
  • Stop reading once the OP says "thanks".

    There are exceptions, of course.

  • Erastil and women tends to be a bad topic as well.

    Liberty's Edge

The only threads I absolutely won't enter on any internet forum are those pertaining to politics and breakfast cereal. No consensus can ever be reached on either topic.

Yes it is a terrible topic, sadly people do it all the time even if it's unintentional.

For example, a lot of people automatically assumes I am a guy because I'm on the internet and I play RPGs. O.o I mean, it would be weird for a lot of people if I just automatically assumed they were all girls until I was proven otherwise.

Is 4e vs Pathfinder still troll bait? I've had posters break down into tears like hormonally unstable thirteen year olds when I made a comment contrasting the two games, but for the last several months I've seen other people make such comparisons without other posters making such a scene.

There is an ebb and flow to the edition war. Every time I think people have grown up, something reignites it. If we're really lucky, your comment right there will start up another skirmish!

... or maybe I should rename this as "Topics to Bait Trolls"?

I forget which rule that is.. rule #14 or #16 of the internet. "All girls are guys until proven otherwise"

Eh, it's rule #37 on the copy I have.

My personal favorite bait for trolls is a halfling smothered in mint sauce. I find the trolls usually go for it.

    Successful Troll loves mint sauce!

    - Anything written as a statement but ends in a question mark (?).

    - Psionics. Already been mentioned but needs to be again. These threads are toxic. The Middle East will find peace before the divisions in the Psionics debate.

    - Cantrips too powerful.

    - Psionic Kittens with Create Water are the bane of our existance?

"I hate my dad and my parents had the worst relationship in history" threads, thinly veiled as "government bad" threads. "I desperately need to get laid" threads, usually about the perceived desirability of some female character(s) depicted in fantasy art.

HA! Knitting is for losers. Crochet or GTFO.

    Dork Lord wrote:

Nope. Knitting is out. Did a google search on knitting arguments and we would be opening ourselves up to a flame war on English vs Continental knitting (whatever that might mean).

    Liberty's Edge

None of those threads described above are complete without adding James Jacobs' name to them. He is, afterall, the only person working at Paizo and the smartest/sexiest man alive. James Jacobs = 2.5 x Chuck Norris.

James Jacobs once figured out the secret to resurrection just so he could kill a man twice.

I doubt that. EVERYBODY knows that English Knitting is the best. People who prefer Continental Knitting just don't understand English Knitting.

Unless of course Chuck Norris has a kitten familiar with maxed out ranks in Knitting (English). Then it would be a bit closer to James Jacobs = 1.5 X Chuck Norris.

    Liberty's Edge

I have sufficiently derailed this thread by using two words:

    1) Chuck

    2) Norris

I hope that is a lesson to all of you.

Bah. I think it was already derailed. :-p

Threads wouldn't derail as often if the US would invest in a modern high speed rail system.
