Leveling Up

Advice

Where in the pathfinder books does it say how much to increase HP, AC, Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha, and other things by when I gain a level. I do not know how to level up my character. Seriously here. I am used to 4th ed character builder doing everything for me and have never played 3.5 before. It's be nice if they would state it in the books r at least make it more obvious on where to find it.

Heck, it was a pain enough for me to get the character set right for level 1, and I am still not sure if some things are right. Pathfinder is fun, but the books are not newbie friendly.

help please.

HP increases with each level and there is a part under each class that says HD which you roll that die and add that total plus your Con modifier to your HP total.

AC doesn't change unless you increase your Dex modifier or wear armor and other stuff.

Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha only can be increased through magic items or once every 4 levels you can increase one of these stats.

Every odd level you should get a feat

Every level you should get an amount of skill points listed under your class.

By the way, no offense, but it took an awful lot of self-control to not say something negative about your post.

Ya seriously the core rulebook is fairly user freindly

page 30 might be particular useful under the heading of: Advancing a Charcter ?

really just sit down and read through the first few chapters slowly it'll make sense if you take the time.

asking your GM is also a good source of help :)

Reading the first couple of chapters (Especially "Getting Started") is a good start.

On page 14, there's "Generating a Character" with the basics about getting a 1st-level character.

Page 30 has "Character Advancement". Note that when table 3-1 says "Ability Score" (which happens every 4 levels), you get to increase any one of your ability scores (Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha) by 1.

Beyond that, refer to the entry for your class - it shows you all class-dependant benefits you get from levelling up. You see how many skill points you get, and what hit dice (HD) the class has.

How many HP this hist die gives you depends on how the GM handles it, though the standard is: You gain maximum HP for your very first level (meaning when you're level 1 - a fighter 5 multiclassing into rogue doesn't get full HP for hist 1st rogue level) and roll the die for later levels (So barbarians start with 12 HP and roll 1d12 on later levels).

Add your Con modifier to each hit die you get (so the barbarian in the example above - let's say she has Con 16 - gets 12 + 3 HP on first level, and later rolls 1d12 and adds 3 for each additional level). This change is always retroactive, so if you later increase your con modifier, your HP go up for every HD (but the reverse is also true - beware effects that decrease your Con)

In most cases, your AC does not increase by levelling up (Monks are a big exception as they gain a class bonus to AC). AC is determined by equipment (armour, shield, magic items) and your dexterity (so if you improve any of these, your AC improves).

The best way to learn is to read the stuff and then ask questions, though. Ideally you have more experienced players who can tell you stuff.

Thank you. I try to read through, but I don't always see what I am looking for. Especially when switching between two reference materials. I saw no mention of the few things I was looking for and just assumed they were listed elsewhere. I never thought "oh hey, maybe ac doesn't increase at all. this is very different from 4th ed". haha, oh well, now I know.

And sorry, I never really thought of asking others for help because I don't run in a home game or anything. I go to the local comic shops. and I don't have time to edit things with help right there after the game. and I don't want to waste time or not play next time while someone sits aside to help me edit characters.

I see the ability score on table 3-1 now, I was looking at that table earlier too, I don't know what I thought that was since I missed that. and I totally get the hp thing now. I was going to completely ignore the con part and just go by the dice.

Looks like I wont have to worry about AC much. I'm playing a Witch.

Remember also that every 4 levels you get to increase one of your attributes by 1 point.

perhaps you might find pathfinder wiki or pathfinder srd websites easier to learn the rules from since you can search and cross reference stuff quicker than in a book
